According to the index of divorces, my great grandparents were divorced in Crawford County in 1897. When the clerk pulled the file, it was empty. All the documents pertaining to the divorce are missing. I have checked the Crawford County Circuit Court Index for the surname, but there was nothing there. Does anyone have any suggestions of anywhere else information about this divorce might be found? I am not sure what the procedure would be for obtaining a divorce in 1897 or if there would even be copies of the divorce records any where other than the County Courthouse. Elayne, You might take a look at any property records relating to this couple. Occasionally, divorce records will show up among land records, as if to document the nature of the land owner's relationships/marital status. If the couple sold land around the time of their divorce, the divorce record may be included in the paperwork. Also, if there was a quit claim or transfer of property between spouses, you may get lucky and find the record there.
