This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ue.2ADI/1338.1 Message Board Post: The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (USCGS) has thousands of maps with extensive information, including out-of-the-way cemeteries. For example in Pennsylvania it has for Chester County - 47 Cems., Philadelphia Co. - 35, Montgomery Co. - 63, Bucks Co. - 37, Berks Co. - 23, and Delaware Co. - 28. A cemetery in Ohio that was on a road that had been closed for about 30 years was located with a little help of a county map. The link to this service is http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html It may look difficult to use but is very simple if you print out and follow these steps: Bring up the page with the form and fill in this info: State Name, County, and Feature Type. That would be cemetery in this case. Click on "Send Query" and wait!! Sometime slow! It will list all of the recorded cemeteries in that county. Most important info is on right/Cemetery Name and on Left/the Map Name. Each map has a name and might not correspond to anything that makes sense to you, but just remember, "This is Government"! Pick out cemetery you want to check out location (that is all you will find) Click on name and Wait! Have a good currant county map handy, the roads have no names in most cases. It will open with a little box with the name etc., right below that will a link that says, "show feature location", click on this. WAIT! It will open up with a map of USA showing location of County. Right below it will appear the county with the cemetery indicated by a red circle or dot. If there are close towns it will show those names, but most roads have none. If you want to ZOOM In for a closer look, scroll down below map and click away. It shows only Harmony Cemetery in Crawford County, but if you just specify Illinois, it shows about six in other counties.
