Martha Goldsmith Grim was born near Canton, Ohio, March 7, 1851; came with her parents, John and Catherine Grim, to Cumberland County, Ill., in 1857 was married to Rev. M. H. Ambrose former pastor of the Palestine, Ill. Presbyterian church, December 27, 1872; died at Los Angeles, California, Feb. 23, 1918, age 66 years, 10 months and 4 days. From early youth she was a sincere and earnest follower of Christ, faithful in all church duties and work, as were her parents. A former pupil, and for many years a true friend, lover, wife, companion, helpmate, counselor and most devoted and self-sacrificing Mother of the most loving and devoted children, her husband is profoundly grateful that all her friends have, for long so regarded her, and {he is} broken hearted, lonely, and desolate, {along} with the devoted children she bore him and nurtured to man and womanhood, he hopes steadfastly through God's mercy, to meet her again when the evening shadows and the night is past and renew an eternal companionship. In the language of another similarly bereaved "a gracious spirit, she moved through life a strong and helpful presence a source of power and inspiration to all who knew her, giving joy to the joyless, strength to the weak and comfort to the sorrowing". She opened her home in the great City to many homeless and friendless girls who today mourn as her own children, and with them as they recall her self sacrificing, loving devotion to their welfare, will ever rise up and call her blessed. Her husband's elder brother who owed much to her loving care, when he himself in deepest sorrow and peril, in the long ago writes, "No better woman, wife or mother ever lived." His only sister writes, "Our whole family was agreed to love our sister, Mattie? a little more than any of the rest-and that to without any jealousy on the part of the others. We could not do otherwise, she so good and unselfish." She was the mother of six children; Austin. H. of Waterloo, Iowa, Mrs. Inez P. Fife of Palestine, IL., Mrs. Mamie C. Brashares, of Logan, Ohio, Louis dying at 4 years of age at Diveron, IL. , Roy B.. of Pittsburgh, Penn., Grace C. of Eldorado, Kansas.
