MARTHA SMITH WALKER In the bright glow of the quiet Sunday morning, May 8, 1904, the spirit of Martha Smith Walker, relict of Alexander Walker, familiarly known as Grandma Walker, peacefully took its flight from earth and its cares and triumphantly entered the happy beyond. She was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania November 8, 1818, where she grew to womanhood, and early in life was married to Alexander Walker. They then moved to Jackson county, Ohio, remaining there eight years, and in 1868, with her husband and family, came to this county, remaining a resident till her demise, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. L. Nichols. Grandma Walker was a life-long member of the United Presbyterian church, and was a true, faithful and devout follower of all its principles and teachings. Upon her coming to this county she united with the church at this place and as long as her health would permit was found at each service. After years marked their history on her brow in deepening lines and times snow that never melts dropped softly on her forehead and she became totally blind and could not attend, yet she never lost interest in the church or Sunday school, and maintained her love for it till the last. As a mother she was kind and indulgent, never forgetful what might be best for each child's welfare. Patience her predominating trait of character. Selfishness was not known to her. As a friend and neighbor she leaves many who will revere her memory for her many acts of kindness. The pale, withered hands of four score and five years now stirless--are folded over the silent heart.
