Barb, I am doing the line of George Washington White. He died in Palestine, 18 APR 1895, and is buried in Palestine Cem. This line is really confusing. It is appearing more and more They came out of SC, possibly from NJ or MD to Old Rappahanock, VA very early on. What adds to the confusion is that they moved often---or sure appear to have moved a lot. I went by some of the neighbors names in Casey Co. KY 1810 and 1820 censuses. This is were my dad's line of Rousey/McGinnis comes from. This line goes to John Catlett, Ralph Baldwin, Raph Rowzie (Rousey). I am finding a big connection to my Whites with this line! George Washington White was mom's line from marriage of Isabel White (George W. daughter) and James Daniel Reynolds in Crawford Co in 1865. Isabel and James's daughter was Sarah Elizabeth, who married William Albert Williamson, DeWitt Co. IL (my grandparents). Really turned out good! Poor, but good. Benoni White, early Crawford Co, is a connection to Perquimans and Pasquotank Co. NC---and the family lines seems to have blended. I have been racking my brains for years concentr! ating on all these different Whites---when it dawned on me that they may have not been related at all. Some who came into an area were probably very distant cousins. This is like 50 years down the road. I am trying to stick to one time frame---and go forward. I know George Washington m. Sarah Malinda Turner in Crawford Co. in 1851. One of the books on history of families says George went to the gold rush. I would think that would be impossible since he had child James born in IN in 1848, Isabel in 1849 (Casey Co. KY), and Nancy in 1850 in IN. Then he marries Sarah Turner in 1851. I know I can't find him in any 1850 census with Isabel, Nancy, and James! Somehow, all the names connect to Randolph White, who was in Casey Co. in 1810. Randolph was born in ENG in 1755. He died in 1831, Howard Co. MO---and somehow they connect to the Benoni White line of NC. Benoni was born in 1790 to Benjamin and Rachel Elliott. I know the Elliott line also married into the line of m! y dad's line----Gaines, Catlett, Rousey, McGinnis, Minor, Rains, Talia ferro. Many of the neighbors in the Casey and Crawford Censuses either married a White--who in turn dvorced--and remarried. I am convinced many of the children had other names other than White. These woman who were married before must have had children when one looks at dates for them. I am thinking many used the name of the head of the household, but when married, they used their biological surname. So many unanswered ?s!!! I thought if people could tell me where their line in Crawford Co came from, I could narrow in on things. It really looks like a lot of the early men in Crawford Co. were soldiers---and building forts---or something. Shari
Audrey, At this time, I have made no connection other than they were all living in the same place at about the same time. I am trying to track several names to connect to George and Randolph White, 1810 and 1820 Casey Co. Ky census. Some of thse families appear to have been living in Crawford Co, IL early, then removed to Casey Co. William Cobb and Henry Harper removed to Casey Co after the 1820 Crawford Co. IL census. Also, many removed form these areas to Howard Co. MO---then back to Crawford Co. Randolph White's neighbor was John Cooley.in Casey-Mercer Co. KY. They removed to Howard Co. MO. Randolph and John's children married into each others lines. I noticed that William Cooley is back in Crawford Co. about 1850 or 1860. I am going on the assumption that many of these lines traveled together---and married within lines. Many of the woman appear to have married before, then going back to maiden name, but I have not gotten that far yet. I am trying to stick to one family line---as so many spread out, then rejoined 20 years later!!! I am just trying to narrow down some names that appeared in some court papers I have for 1817-1823 or 1827 timeframe. Most of the things do not have dates with them. I noticed Stephen (Steven) Eaton a name that was due to appear in court. Most of these case were minor incidents---and some were not even listed. If I make a connection, will let you know. I am finding many collateral lines married cousins, etc., way back---and that is where a connection may come in. These family lines then split due to loss of land or other. Shari
Barb, Thanks once again for the info on your Gill family. This gives me another place to look for my White line. I did find a James White in Franklin Co. KY who m. a Frances Hutchison. I realize there were a lot with the same names---and the English or whoever sure changed some of the spellings of those names!! It never dawned on me so many could not speak a word of English. The Irish/Scots even had their own dialect. Shari

Barb, Thanks again. I did a search for Fishing Creek, SC and came upon a great website. It is www.angelfire.com/folk/scsites There is a gravesite link---and is very interesting with a lot of names on one marker in York, SC. Also, several other links that include some general history of battles--and where they took place. I also saw a Thomas Gill was taken as a prisoner to Charles Town by one Col. Richard Richardson. Was wondering if this might be your Thomas. There is also a Fishing Creek at Union, SC. Some of the gravesite pictures are of churches and graveyards--with tombstones. the one for York at Bethel Pres. Church is very nice--with name of Samuel Neely. Very nice stone with wife and children listed on it. Some of the stones were donated by the children of a school in York Co. SC. There is also some maps that show migration, for example, the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road. Thanks again to anyone who sends me info that I might connect to my line in Casey Co. Ky and Crawford Co. IL Shari in SC. PS--I am orginally from Rantoul, Champaign Co. IL.
Barb, Where is your Fishing Creek, SC (for Thomas Gill) located? Some of these places extended for miles so would like to narrow it down. Thank once again, Shari

Can someone tell me where many of the surnames in Crawford Co. census in 1820 came from? Several names appear to be French or from Canada. Am wondering if they were thrown together by Rev. War and War of 1812. I have been in search of George Washington White, died in Palestine, 18 APR 1895. I always thought this line connected to my mother's side---but it connects to my dad's line from Casey-Mercer Co. KY. This line comes out of Old Rappahanock, Va to Lunenburg Co. VA, then many split to NC and SC. I received some court papers for John, Isaac, and William White for 1817-1823 ?. They did not tell much, but sure gave a lot of names that I ran. Some of the names were Alexander Ogg, Henry French, William Owens (came from New Lanark, Scotland, age 22, declared to become a citizen--no date), Jeremiah Johnson, James Shaw (daughter Mary m. one James White), Robert Gill, Cyrus Gill, Thomas Gill, Thomas Fuller, Edward Legg (Leggett), Abraham Parker, john b. Richardson, Edward Cullom, Isaac Ong (Ogg ?), William Waldrop, Stephen Eaton, and John Moore. A local historian here in SC told me that many came into VA and the Carolinas very early--and actually removed to the New England states. He said when those people came into the New England states, they were classifeid as "the scum of the earth" by local meeting house minutes. Sorry, I got off the subject. These men were cases that were to appear before the court, such as "The People of the State of Illinois vs. John White or Stephen Eaton. The Ogg name as well as others appear in old 1704 tax list for Old Rappahanock Co, VA area. This was divided to Richmond, Essex--and expanded to Elizabeth City. Some history---if anyone recognizes something. Randolph and George White appear in Casey-Mercer Co. KY census in 1810. Randolph m. Margaret Kirtland. Randolph and others removed to Howard Co. MO--where Randolph died in 1831. George White was in 1820 census--and died in 1824. Will abstract states children as Andrew, George W (not my George born in 1818), Nathan, Patsy, William, John, Eson, Ely, Ester, Sally, Polly, Catherine, Maney, Isabel, and James. George's wife was Jane. In 1820, there is no wife in census. Two sons appear to have come back--and were born before George White m. Nancy Lewis in Accomack Co. VA in 1799. Nancy died in 1818. I am beginning to think Nancy was previously m. to one John Taylor of Mercer Co. KY (1794)---and some of the children may have been Taylors and not Whites. Executors to the will for March Court, Mercer Co. KY were Thomas Hutchings and William Minor. William Minor connects to my dad's line that goes back to John Catlett and Ralph Rousey and Ralph Baldwin (John Catlett and Ralph Baldwin owned ship that brought people from Eng. to America. They started one of the first settlements near the town of Port Royal (Old Rappahanock). Witnesses to the will of 1824 for George White were Jaqueline A. TALIAFERRO Lewis, Thomas Thoman (Thomas ?), and Jacob Johnson. Appraisers were WILLIAM COBB and HENRY HARPER, and Leonard Taylor. William Cobb and Henry Harper were living in Crawford Co. IL in 1820--and removed short! ly after the census. Also, there was Benoni and James White in Crawford Co. in 1820----and I think this reappears in Casey Co. 1820 census. I am "assuming" they removed to Casey-Mercer Co. area along with William Cobb and Henry Harper---as well as others. Also, Isaac white appears in Casey Co in 1820. Now, Stephen White was born to Taylor and Francis Armstrong White, 1759, Lincoln Inn, Northumberland, ENG. Stephen m. Jemima Davenport. They had daughters, Elizabeth and Anna. ANNA m. Edward Leggett (Legg), 18 OCT 1814 in TN, and Anna died in CRAWFORD CO. IL, 18 SEPT 1840. The Armstrong and Davenport line were also in Casey-Mercer Co. KY--and connects to my dad's line. Benoni White was born in 1790, Pasquotank/Perquimans Co. NC. John, James, and Benoni appear in the Crawford Co. 1820 census. John is in the 1830 census, and in 1840 there is no White surnames, but believe several White women who married were still living there. I am trying to make the connection of the Whites of Benoni's line to the Whites in Casey-Mercer--to Crawford Co--to Howard Co. Mo. Benoni's parents were Benjamin and Rachel Elliott White. In 1850, the White surname starts to reappear in Crawford Co. Maybe to be close to sisters, mothers who remarried? After reading many pension applications for the Rev. War at Mercer Co. KY website, one man states that he came from Canada, and was sent as a soldier all over counties, and he fought with Col. George Rogers. Many state they came from MASS, NY, VT, etc. One man was living in another state, and his lawyer filed for him. The time frame seemed to be about 1845 for these applications. Then, Leonard Taylor's wife, Sally BLAGROVE, gave testimony for one man. The Blagrove line came out of Lunenburg Co. VA to Casey-Mercer Co. KY about 1785. There was a Joseph White also. Several court documents from Lunenburg tells which way these people went. Col. George Rogers was fighting throughout IND--one place being Ft. Sackville---and around Vincennes and Tippecanoe, IN. Many of these Rev. War soldiers probably went back to their homes--while some stayed and remarried. Many certified genealogists have told me in the past that many men had two different families in two different states---and never returned. It would appear that many of the families living in one area of VA got divided during land divisions--depending on how much land was lost or gained. Could this have put a father in one county and his sons in another--leaving the impression that these are a different line? Who knows. Back to George White. I found a George White m. to JANE HERRINGTON in Knox Co. IN in Feb of 1824. He died shortly after marriage---if this is my line. Then in 1820 census, there was William Herrington living two doors down from George White. William did not appear in Casey Co. censuses before. I know there was a Pitt B. Herrington married a Ruth Buck in DeWitt Co. IL---where my George Washington White's daughter (and my gr-grandmother) was living. Isabel was born 1 OCT 1849, Casey Co. KY. She m. James Daniel Reynolds in Robinson, Crawford Co. IL, 13 JULY 1865. Their children, William I., Stacy Ann, James Irvin, and Sarah Elizabeth were born in Robinson. This is my mom's line. The Herrington name is interesting becasue there was DANIEL HERRINGTON in Crawford Co in 1820. Daniel goes to Hawkins Co. TN., but has a daughter, Jane. So, I have to figure out if William Herrington was a brother to Jane or the father. So many named their children the same. Then I find Margaret White (d/o Randolph White and Margaret Kirtland) m. Samuel Jackson. They were living in Owen Co. Ind, 1840s. Then I find a George White m. Lucy Jane Baker in 1846 in Owen Co---and believe this to be the mother of James, ISABEL, and Nancy White. They show in the 1860 Crawford Co. census with George W. White and Sarah Malinda Turner White--along with children of Sarah and George--Jesse, Christina. James was b. in IN in 1848 and Nancy in 1850 in IN. And Isabel in KY in 1849. I have a lot of documents on Isabel and James Daniel Reynolds. Also, I was sent some pages from a book on hisotry of some people from Crawford Co. It states that George W. White was married to a CRONIN. There was no marriage to a CRONIN. It also states he had a son, Charles. THERE WAS NO CHARLES BORN TO GEORGE W. His children were James, Isabel, Nancy, Jesse, Christina, John, William Washington, and Alice. Jesse m. Flora Leach and Dora Tisdale. Christina m. a Sandifer and James VAUGHT (Vaught is my dad's side also). Alice m. Oliver Jones, William m. Emily McDaniels. One other puzzling thing is about AMBROSE BETHEA RAINS. He shows born to James and Nancy Owens Rains. Ambrose lived and died in Crawford Co. IL. Then, Nancy m. James White. They show as having a son, Ambrose Bethea White. Was he actually the son of James Rains or James White? It really appears many families were on the move frequently--and descendents came back (much like today)! I am sorry this is so long, but have not posted any new info for awhile. If anyone has any names that can connect some of these lines, would appreciate it. Oh, and there was an Old Flat Rock church in SC. It was Presbyterian and was headed by Rev. Thomas Locke, who became a neighbor of George White in Casey Co. in 1820. So many of the names I have found during this search connect with the Gaines, Strothers, Hawkins, Davenport, Taylor, Eason/Eaton, French, Herrington, Minor, Rains, BARBER, Wells, James family lines. This record indicates he had a son 16 to 26. (William Long married Elizabeth Little 30 Oct 1827 in Crawford Co., IL.) 1830 census in Crawford includes a Benjamin Long, an Edward Long, and a William Long. 1840 census in Crawford includes William Long only. 1850 census in Crawford includes the William Long family and a 16 yr old George Long with another family. I have also found information on William's children: Emeline, Angeline, and John. I have no info on Caroline. If I find something I will contact you.
