As the parade was formed the boys in blue noticed Gid Calvert and E. L. Wiseman, who were in the Confederate Army, standing on the walk on the side of the street, and the way Col. Wiseman puts it is that "the Yanks captured two johnnies right in town " How pleasing it is to see all the strife that once existed between the men of the north and those of the south now blooming in full brotherhood. No north, no south, no east, no west, but all one kindred of mankind " The E. L. Wiseman mentioned is my great grandfather, and is buried here in Crawford County, but I have never been able to confirm his Confederate service with National Archives, although hope to be able to do so someday. However, he did not appeared on the 1850 census so he must have either moved away or died between 1840 and 1850. Do you know who this might be?

I also wrote to IL for his death records and they could not locate a Caleb nor Charles York. I have been told that Miranda, his widow, applied for her pension in Arkansas. I'm awaiting those records from the National Archives. I have an old family bible of my grandmother's (Caleb's grandaughter) with date information. I know that the IL Civil War Website had him listed as Charles and I sent the National Archives records to them so that they would list the name "Caleb" as well. Thank you for your interest, suggestions, and response, it was most appreciated.

His father were probably John F. Calvert, born in 1811 in Ohio. In 1850 the family was living in Rome Twp., Ohio. From his obit we know that Gideon moved to Virginia (that part that became WV). During the Civil War, Frank traveled by covered wagon to Crawford County, Illinois with his father, mother and older brother, John. Several months after arriving at the new homestead, Frank's mother died. Shortly afterward, Dan remarried. The children of Dan's first marriage were John, Frank, Gilbert, Amon and Albert. About 1883, Frank married Mathilda Jane Graham in Crawford County, IL. Their children were Alice Elizabeth, Ola Ellen, Ethel Mary, Julia, and Luster George Newman. Frank and Jane lived in a log house south of Hardinville near the cemetery. The land for the Hardinville Cemetery was purchased from land they owned. > > During the time they lived in the log house they operated an apple butter press and a cider mill. Luster used to laugh about how as a child, it was his job to drive the horses that turned the mill that ground the apples. He was paid a nickle for each batch and he used to demand his nickle before he did the work. In 1906 they moved to their permanent residence in Hardinville, where for several years they ran a boarding house during the oil boom. After they closed the boarding house they farmed and raised cattle in partnership with their son, Luster George Newman and his wife. > > Luster married June Della Spencer in 1916. Their children are Gladys Marjorie Newman (Bishop) and Mary Mildred Newman (Wilcox). Luster and June purchased a home in Hardinville, next to his parents. The family continued to farm until 1935 when Frank died. Jane died in 1958 and both are buried in Hardinville Cemetery. > > Due to ill health, Luster and his wife and their two children, including their son-in-law, Thomas David Bishop, moved to Colorado in October, 1936. Luster died in Colrado Springs in 1969 and is buried at Memorial Gardens Mausoleum there. His wife and daughters continue to make Colrado Springs their home. > >
