    1. [ILCRAWFO] Jonas Painter Family
    2. Beverly A. Matthews
    3. Posted on: Crawford Co. Il Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Crawford/134 Surname: Painter, Montgomery, Fowler, Highsmith, Collwell ------------------------- Greetings: Yes, I am aware of the book. However some things are not correct, entirely, in the above book. Things are not documented in them throughly before publishing the effects. There is voids in their information. Census reports, Court Documents,Land records, Death Certificates, Family knowledge, etc, do not all correspond with the above books information. The following are items pertaining to Jonas Painter family. I have not located Jonas Painter in the 1818 State Census of Illinois, Nor in any census before 1820 in the USA. Benjamin Painter was born in Ohio. So hopefully can be located there or in Virginia for 1810 Census, someday. Jonas Painter arrived in Crawford County, Illinois before 1819. He sat on the first grand Jury in 1819. ------------- My additions in ( ). 1820 Census, Crawford County, Illinois,Page 44, 34, M33-12: PAINTER, Jonas 1 male age 45 and over (born before 1775- 1 male age 10 to 16 (born 1804-1810- 1 male age 16 to 26 (born 1794-1804- 1 female age 16 to 26 (born 1794-1804- 1 female age 45 and over(born before1775- 3 persons working in Agriculture. ----------------- Jonas Painter purchased land from the Vincennes, Indiana land office, August 18, 1823. This was located in Crawford County, Illinois. ------------ comissioners record book,1816 to 1829, Year 1826: There is an article where it was ordered that the following be taken off the John WOODS Road District, and added to the V. I. WILSON Road District. This article named Jonas PAINTER and sons. Note: Sons-Benjamin and George? Note: Benjamin is mentioned in probate of Jonas Painter of 1847 (I have a copy of probate records). Note: George, born in Germany, is mentioned in John Painter's death certificate It has been told he was disowned by his father in oral history) --------------- Jonas Painter applied for a marriage license in Crawford County, Illinois, March 31, 1830 Jonas Painter married Hannah J. Montgomery, April 8, 1830, A-36, License # 303. I have a certified copy of the above marriage. -------------- 1830 Census, Crawford County, Illinois, Micro 19, #23, page 4-19: Painter, Jonas 1 male age 50 to 60 (born 1770 to 1780) (Jonas) 1 female age 30 to 40 (born 1790 to 1800) (Hannah Montgomery) ------------- August 20. 1839: Jonas Painter purchased 40 acres of land at $1.25 per acre in Crawford County, Illinois. The description being NWNE of Section 33, Township 6N, Range 12W. This is from the Illinois State Archives Division of Sales of Public Domain of Lands. This is in Volume 291, Page 246. ------------- 1840 Census, Crawford, County, Illinois, No township listed, page 304: Painter, Jonas 1 male age 60 to 70 born 1770-1780 (Jonas) 2 males under 5 born 1835 to 1840 (identified as John and Andrew in 1850 with Hannah) 1 male age 20 to 30 born 1810 to 1820 (Unidentified) 1 female age 5 to 10 born 1830 to 1835 (Unidentified) 1 female age 20 to 30 born 1810 to 1820 Unidentified) 1 female age 30 to 40 born 1800 to 1810 (Hannah in 1850 Census) Note: The above census is not found in the 1840 Illinois State Index Book for Painter, but that is what it says. I have a photostatic copy of this census report. If Jonas Painter is the father of the above children he would have been age 60 to 70 years of age at their births. Hannah Montgomery Painter would have been abt. age 35 at her marriage, age 35 to 45 at the births of the above children in this census report. ----------------- 1843-1848 Probate Records, Crawford County, Illinois, Book 4 Jonas Painter, December 1847. Hannah PAINTER, widow of Jonas PAINTER, assigned her rights of Administrater of Jonas PAINTER estate in abt. December 1847, to Mr. A. W. HIGHSMITH. Note by me: Abijah Woods Highsmith was married to Hannah J. Montgomery's sister, Cynthia A. Montgomery. ----------- November term of 1852, Crawford County, Illinois: The Administrator of his estate, A. W. HIGHSMITH made the settlement of Jonas Painter estate. His widow, Hannah MONTGOMERY Painter, received according to the receipt, dated November 15, 1852, 17/45 of his estate, being $73.50. John PAINTER, Andrew PAINTER, Benjamin PAINTER, and Jane PAINTER, his children and heirs at law of such deceased each received 7/45 of his estate, being $30.33 1/3 each. Benjamin PAINTER and Jane PAINTER each "marked" for their share. I have not located a receipt where John PAINTER and Andrew PAINTER signed or "marked" for their share. They would have been minors at the time of distribution. So who marked and got their shares? ------------ It has been said that "Jonas Painter is probably buried in the JONES cemetery in Crawford County, Illinois". This cemetery was owned by the JONES family. Jane Painter, died March 10, 1880. She is buried in the west side (old part) of the JONES Cemetery, Crawford County, Illinois. ------------ Now my many Questions are: It states and heirs at law. Could John, and Andrew not have been grandchildren of Jonas Painter, both sons of George Painter, probably deceased by 1847 at the death of Jonas Painter before December 1847????? --------- I have lots of questions. Still looking for solutions to the above Surname and given: Jonas PAINTER. Thanks,
