Transcribed by Barbara Dix. The funeral of Mrs. Christena Conditt was held at the Church of Christ last Thursday, Rev. Tomlinson conducting the services. Mrs. Conditt had lived all her life of 52 years in Crawford County, and was well known and greatly beloved by all her relatives and friends. She was a patient sufferer for more than a year previous to her death which had been expected by those who attended to her wants, for weeks before it occurred. It can truly be said of her, she did her part in life's work faithfully. She was a consistent Christian, a faithful friend, a kind neighbor, a devoted wife and a careful, loving mother. Fare well Thou Dear Until those who morn for thee, finish life's work and join thee to rest for ever in the Home not made with hands. Palestine News 2-11-95

Transcribed by Barbara Dix. Ira H. Busard, 87, Old Resident of Palestine, Dead Teacher in Old frame Grade School Building, Farmer and Local. Merchant Death Friday afternoon removed one of Palestine's oldest citizens in the passing of Ira H. Busard, 87, at his home on North Main Street. Farmer, business man and school teacher, Mr. Busard had been identified with important affairs of the community for many years. As a young man he was a teacher here, teaching in the Palestine Grade School in the early eighties when the Palestine school building then housing both grade school and the one-room high school, was located on the lot just north of the present grade school building where the Boy Scout cabin stands. Many years ago Mr. Busard also was one of Palestine's merchants while at different times he gave attention to farming. Late in life he returned to the school room to fill in a short time necessary to qualify for his teacher's pension. For more than 40 years he was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Palestine, beginning this service when the congregation occupied a frame structure where the post office now is located. The old building, used as the LaMotte town house , in the rear of the post office today. He was the oldest member of the church's session. The deceased gave generously of his energies to many church activities and to the time of his death was a close student of the Bible. Ira H. Busard was born in Hebron, Ill., Jan. 11th, 1855, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Busard, the father being a United Presbyterian minister. Mr. Busard is survived by his wife of second marriage, Ella. His first wife was Nancy Jane Fife Busard, usually called "Jennie," daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fife, deceased, and sister of Mrs. Anna Dickinson, Mrs. Mattie Hughes, David Fife and William Fife. Four of their children preceded the father in death, William, Clinton, Robert and, Otto. Robert, who developed into a skilled surgeon at Muskegon, Michigan, met death some years ago in an airplane accident. Following the death of the mother, Mr. Busard for some time made his home in Muskegon with his son. William, the eldest, passed away at about the age of 22. Clinton died when about two years old. The two surviving children are Samuel, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Mary Moody, of Springfield, Mass. Two sisters and one brother also survive, Mrs. Emma Gaines and Mrs. Cora Norton, of Colorado, and Cicero (?) Busard, of Marshall, Illinois. Many friends attended the funeral service Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. Rev. James Wm. Rankin officiated. Burial was in the Palestine cemetery. dated Thur .Feb. 26,1942. The Crocker & Wilson family is believed by many that I have contacted, to have been Cherokee Indian from NC. I have found no record of them in NC and Piercy only is shown in the 1850 IL census. Some believe she returned to NC or died. I had them check the death records for Crawford Co. and there is no record of her death, but that was very early for death records also. Some have told me they believe that Alfred died in NC or on the trail to Illinois. Jesse's brother Simpson Crocker and his family moved to Pomona, Kansas and later their sister, Elizabeth Amada Crocker Hill moved there also. She had lived in Colorado, so they moved around a lot. Eliza, being in IT, that would have been Oklahoma Territory where the Cherokee Indians were taken from NC. It would not have been that far for her to go to Texas, most of the family had moved somewhere else. Jesse had another brother William who fought for the North and the South in the Civil War. Zilpha Moria had a child born in NC, then in IL she married Oliver Hazard Bishop and they moved to Colorado. The son born in NC, was Burden Crocker and he died in the Civil War. Brother Richard died between 1855-1860 in Clark Co. IL., so as you can see they moved or died, so it would not have been impossible for Eliza to go to Texas. Have you gotten a copy of the marriage record? Keep me posted. Carol Shaw
