Dear Friends: My husband and I do workshops in writing family history, autobiography and memoir. My husband, Charley Kempthorne, has written a widely accepted book on writing family history and together we have for seven years published a magazine on the subject. We travel the country and have done dozens of workshops in twenty or more of the States. Often we do the workshops at history museums, libraries, seniors centers, and schools. We are going to be in Illinois the week of November 15 to 21 doing workshops at Rockford and several other Illinois cities. Would your organization have a facility where we might do such a workshop? We would need a room (no special facilities necessary, just a quiet and well-lighted room with tables and/or chair with desk arms so that the participants can write easily) for twenty or more people for up to a full day, though sometimes we do half-day workshops. We are a non-profit organization, The LifeStory Institute, Inc., but we do charge for the workshop and we would expect to pay rent for the room. Would you have a place and an interest in such a workshop? Contract us at our e-mail or if you perfer phone us toll free at 800-685-7330 for more detail. Even if the timing is wrong for you in November, please contact us and we could possibly arrange another time. Thanks! June Kempthorne
I am looking for any and all info on the Masons, Goyettes, and Owens families from Mattoon. If you have any info, please e-mail Preston61@aol.com. Thanks, Sophia
Hello all, I am trying to track down my gggm, her 2nd husband, and family. They married in Coles Co. in 1862 and, according to other information I have gathered, moved between IL/KS/MO for a number of years. Recently, a fellow researcher sent me the following information: 1870 Census, Charleston Twp entry at p.314 for July 12, 1870, at #765 - 755 G. A. Casel age 36 IL -200 no real estate Martha 32 OH George 10 IL Emma 6 IL Beatrice 3 IL The family information I have is as follows: James A. Cassel(l), b. 1831(?) IL Martha Eliz. D. Cassel, b. 1837 OH George T. Tifft, b. 1859 IL (Martha's son - 1st marriage) Anna B. Cassel, b. ca 1863 IL Belreath Cassel, b. ca 1870 IL I'm trying not to reach too far for answers, but these look suspiciously like the same people to me. One of my problems is that the only record I've found of the two daughters is from *another* 1870 census entry for Fallriver, Kansas. Thus, I'm not even sure of their real names in the first place -- Emma/Anna or Beatrice/Belreath? Can anyone tell me if there is a source that can be consulted that might reveal the birth information on the daughters? Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm at my wits' end trying to find these folks after 1870, even though I have a thick file of correspondence with locations, etc., on James (his CW pension application - denied). James apparently died ca 1888, according to correspondence in his file. I'm trying to trace all the family members I know of -- Lizzie's sister Lydia married a William Cossell, and the 3rd sister, Mariah, married a Samuel Markle, all of Coles Co. -- to see if she was widowed a second time and went to live with family, etc. Have also traced one of Lizzie's brothers, James R. Bradford, to Missouri with no luck. George Tifft (my ggf) pops up in Denver some time later, but there is no record of where/when his mother died, nor record of any of her other children. Sorry for the drawn out tale, but I could use some brainstorming on this. TIA! Kathleen Cooper - Carlsbad (San Diego), CA kathleencooper@bigfoot.com
Hello, does anyone know if the Swango Cemetery was ever "indexed". I've received the following information on it...... ----------- Swango Cemetery in Section 28, T13N, R10E of Morgan Township of Coles County, Illinois OR about 1-2 miles South of Coles-Douglas County Line and about 1/2 mile West of Embarrass River. The bad news is that cemetery was abandoned. Does not say when or any other info. Do not know if no stones there or if stones were totally unreadable. Official name of the cemetery is BURIALS OF SWANGO RELATIVES. ------------ I'm looking for possible BLOYER, SHRADER, or CRAIG relatives that may have been buried there. Thanks for any information. Tom tomfg@means.net
Hi Tom, No, the Swango Cemetery was never indexed or read. Apparently it has been abandoned for a long time. It wasn't even read during the 1940's, when several others were by the DAR. Sorry! Dear Linda, Thank you for such a quick response on the location of the CCGS. I will be able to find it OK. As usual, I wasn't very clear in my message. I am staying in Mattoon only because it is more centrally located between Sullivan, Charleston and Shelbyville. My family were from Gays. Thanks again, Bob Young
Hi Bob, First of all, Mattoon is in Coles County, not Moultrie County. I don't know the hours for the Moultrie County Genealogy Society, but you might check the Moultrie County ILGenWeb page to see if they are listed there. However, if you are going to visit the CCGS, they don't have their own building, but they are located in the basement of the Charleston Public Library. The hours are 10am - 8pm, Monday through Thursday, and 10am - 6pm on Friday and Saturday. The library is located one block south of the courthouse, on 6th street (it's a one-way street going south). If you need specific directions, then e-mail me and let me know where you are coming from and I'll tell you exactly. Hope this helps! I believe Andrew Jackson Janes may be the father of Abram Piper Janes whose siblings include a William Washington and a Charles Ferris . Is anyone working on JANES Is there any proof available?? I've read some available rolls.Andrew Jackson married in 1847 and died in 1857. Why did he die? 6 children were born between the two dates. 1860 census shows no family of widow Janes with six children in Matton, although there are a lot of Janes's in the area. A relative I corresponded with before she passed on, Bethel Jaynes Cunningham, related ,"someone came through the area and did a lot of family research. The old family farm is still there and the Janes are all burried together in the same cemetary." I have nothing on Sarah Ellen Blystone's family? Is any one working on BLYSTONE ? My gg grandfather added a "y" in the name because of confusion with the mail. Any cousins out there????Love to exchange info. Hello all, I am new to this list and very happy to learn of this group. My research interests are the ANNAN/ANNIN and TIPPETT surnames. I have some information to share one the ANNAN/ANNIN's, but very little on the TIPPETT's. I also work with the DuVall name in Effingham County. Hope to hear from some cousins soon.
