    1. Bates family
    2. Suzanne Nichelson
    3. I am looking for information on a family that lived in Coles county around 1860-1870 My great great grandmother Mary Ann Bates was married in Edgar county to my great great grandfather Francis A. Nicholson January 19, 1862. He died in Nashville in 1865. She was living in Coles county in 1865, 1866 and various people gave testimony regarding her marriage and her children's birth so that she could get money for support of her children as a Civil War widow. The people who testified were William W. Bates, Margaret J. Bates, Abagail Bates. I am assuming these people were somehow related to her. Does anyone have information on this family or have information on a Nicholson family living in Coles county at the time. Since they were married in Edgar county and lived there until the death of Francis it is possible his family was in Edgar county. Both of them were born in southern Indiana. I have no information on their parents or siblings. Neither of their children were christened. The midwife and Bates women gave testimony at being present at the birth of their children. Mary Ann Bates remarried quite quickly to a man named Howell and moved to Nebraska by 1870. She was divorced in 1870 in Nebraska and remarried Ivan Jensen.

Just my opinion... Hope no one is trying for records from the Methodist Church :) Sierra Lang, Linda wrote: > Hi Donna, > > It depends greatly on what church it is. 3. Hi Donna, It depends greatly on what church it is. Most churches in the county are no longer in existence, so there would be no records. The only exeption *might* be in either Mattoon or Charleston, but even that is highly unlikely. However, if you are looking for a church in the county, there were very few churches, must less organized religions. Mostly there were itinerant ministers who came around every 3-6 months and it was a 2-3 day revival, so to speak. If you know the church, let me know and I'll see what I can find. 3. Hi Sierra, Birth records for Coles County are very few until at least 1880, and even then not all births were registered, that is until after 1916. There are some before that date, but very, very few. Linda Listowner At 09:57 AM 8/27/98 -0700, you wrote: Hi List, Does anyone know how far back birth records go. 3. Hi Coles Co. Researchers. I need your help in locating the parents of Mary Ann Farris who married Jacob Furry in Coles Co. 1850's. She could have been a widow of a Farris. (Maybe Thomas Farris, his wife was Mary Ann) Also I need to contact a descendant of Alonzo Farris who married Mary Ann Furry. I am not sure that there is a descendant left. Thanks for any help or advice. James

    1. BRESEE, MILLER
    2. I'm new to the list, researching the family of Elbert Miller, who was in Coles (then Clark) Co, IL with his father, Charles, as early as 1830. They moved off to Fayette Co and then Madison Co, IL but Elbert returned to Coles Co, where his brother Berville Miller had remained, to marry Mary Jane Bresee, the sister of Berville's wife. Mary Jane was the dau of William Bresee and Polly Stark, both originally of New York. William Bresee disappeared from the records about 1841 and his wife, Polly, died about 1846. Elbert and Mary Jane Miller moved to St. Louis soon after their marriage in 1842, but Elbert returned to Coles Co and is listed in the 1850 census living with his brother Berville. Would like to share information with anyone working on these lines. Thanks, Sharon
