    3. Let me try this one 'backwards' from my past tries. Mary ELSTON was married to Beni WHITE. They were married in 1810, and at least some of their twelve children were born in the Coles County IL area. Does anyone have information on this family? I am trying to connect one of the possible sons (Charles) who is my gggrandfather. Thank you for whatever consideration you are able to give this request. I really want to make this link. 2. Sharon W. Gabel
    3. Hi All, I have just posted this query to the Coles County, Illinois GenWeb site and thought I should copy the list. Isaac Kindred WELLS was born circa 1830 in TN? Isaac is enumerated in the household of Alex MONTGOMERY on the 1850 census in Coles County. I have no other information about him or what, if any, connection he had to the Montgomery family. He could be a hired hand or relative, who knows? Isaac married Martha Ellen EASTIN on 27 Feb 1853 in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois. Their issue: John Andrew, Cynthia Jewell, Isaac Sherman, Joseph C., and Mary Alice, were all born in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. The family migrated to Crawford County, Arkansas appearing in the 1880 federal census there. By 1900, they were in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (kna Pittsburg County, Oklahoma). I would certainly appreciate anyone with information about this family contacting me. Thanks, Sharon Wells Gabel mailto:grandman@ptialaska.net

    2. Sue Cook
    3. Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. (He was born in 1777 and died in 1834.) Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook

    3. Hi Candee, Regarding the History of Coles County, 1879, there is no definite price yet, although I suspect it will be between $50-60. I'll let you know for sure on that one. As for the Portrait and Biographical Album, 1889, here is the information on how and where to order it: Published by: Higginson Book Co. 148-P Washington Street Salem, MA 01970 Phone - 508-745-7170 Fax - 508-745-8025 e-mail <higginsn@cove.com> Cost of the book is $59.00 I'm not sure if the cost includes postage, but probably not. If you are still interested in the book you might e-mail them and let them know. Hope this helps. 1. Beware-- don't let this happen to you
    2. It is such a shame that a few people can ruin a good thing. A few month's ago, I received news of a heinous crime against a fellow researcher. She is technically blind, but before her eyesight was gone, she collected a wealth of info on her HALL and PEER lines. She had been corresponding with a man on the net for a while, when he asked if he could visit her and get copies of her court and pension records. A date was set, but the man appeared early one weekend when he knew she was going to be out of town and manipulated his way into her house, by telling her daughter some cock n bull story. I bet you can imagine what happened next. Left alone with her documents and her library, he and his girlfriend proceeded to make multiple trips out to his car and stole all of her books, photos, documents and correspondence---A LIFE TIME OF EFFORT. And because of her failing eyesight, material that can never be reproduced. He even coerced her daughter into allowing him access to her computer files and then, so I am told, erased her computer files. This man is a Rootsweb researcher-- someone you may have corresponded with --- Scary isn't it. After a lenghty battle -- and a clear threat of a law suit, the man did FINALLY return her books and some of her papers to her last week. However, many documents and pictures are missing. He even took copies of her long distant telephone bills????? I wanted you to hear this story and hopefully be on guard. Be careful when you invite someone to share your research material. Let your family know that this material is priceless to you and that under no circumstance would you want it to be left unprotected. NO MATTER HOW HARMLESS THE INDIVIDUAL SEEMS. This particular man is reported to do volunteer work for the LDS and has done civic duties in the community. God bless you all and be careful-- this may have happened to you--I know it could have been me, but for the grace of God. Candee

    3. Hi all, Well, I've made a major goof!! When I talked with a member of the Coles County Genealogical Society Board the other day and learned about the possible reprint, I got the name of the wrong book. We had discussed several books and I inadvertently wrote down the wrong book. The book that is being considered for reprint is the "History of Coles County, 1879." It does not have an index, but one is also being considered. If anyone would interested in this book, let me know and I will let the CCGS know. However, the news isn't all bad. I did find out today that there is a company that has reprinted the 1889 Portrait and Biographical History of Coles County. Those of you who have already contacted me, I wil be sending a separate letter with all the details of the cost and who to send the request to. If anyone else would like the information, just let me know and I'll send it to you. Sorry about the confusion!! Linda listowner
