    1. [ILCOLES-L] HATCHER/DUNN families
    2. Linda Seaman
    3. Hi List, I am kind of stuck here and was wondering if someone on the list could point me where to go next. We have a branch of the family we are researching, and found a marriage there in Coles Co., but we are not sure if it is the right people or not. It is a marriage between William DUNN and Amy HATCHER, on 24 July, 1864 by a J.P. I sent for the certificate, but all we got on the certificate was just those facts...no parents, no residence, ages or place of birth, so we can tell if these are the right people or not. Any ideas of where to go next?? Were there other records kept of marriages? Or is this all the county kept? They did not stay long, if it was our ancestors, as they show up in 1870 in Waupaca Co., WI. And the HATCHER family was from Ohio. Our Wm. Dunn was from Ireland. Those are our best clues. Any ideas?? Thanks, Linda Seaman Researching: WORDEN, JAKEWAY, DUNN, HATCHER, ELLEFSON, WETMORE, GENSLER, DECHANT, FOX, DONEY, BIEKER, HARTWICH, SEAMAN, TRIGG, VERMILLION, CARDER, TUNNEL, MIDDAUGH, and related lines. 1. [ILCOLES-L] SPARKS-GILBERT
    2. Crouse, Lyle R. and Patricia A.
    3. I have just subscribed to the Coles Co. list and am hoping I can find some information on my g-grandparents, John B. SPARKS and Margaret Jane GILBERT. John was born in 1845 in Vigo Co., IN and he and Margaret were married in 1880 in Jasper Co., IL. This was his 2nd marriage. In the 1900 IL census they were living in Coles Co., Ashmore Twp., Ashmore Village and this is where John died on 25 Jan 1919. He is buried in Ashmore(Robertson) cemetery. My quest is to find an obituary for John. Does anyone know what newspaper an obit might be in and/or exactly where this cemetery is? I would appreciate any information. Thanks, Pat

    1. [ILCOLES-L] f and ss letters in old handwriting
    2. Roy and Marcie VanDeren
    3. HI, I do not have the answer for you. I thought you might like to know that the "f" in Blefsed and in witnefseth is actually the double "s" in those words. It was a long time before someone told me that this was the old handwriting style of making a double ss. So they did spell correctly words like blessed and witnesseth. Have a nice day! 1. [ILCOLES-L] Caleb CARTER'S Bible
    2. Lewis Family
    3. In his will, presented for probate, 17 Nov 1828, State of Ohio, Champaign County, Caleb CARTER left his "large bible" to his son, Levi CARTER. The will states: I Caleb Carter of Champaign County, Goshen Township, being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory; blefsed be Almighty God for the same; do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say). First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Carter three cows, sixteen sheep, all my hogs four beds and bedding all my household and kitchen furniture-I leave my large bible to my son Levi Carter. And lastly my beloved wife Mary Carter is hereby appointed sole executrix of this my last will and Testament, Thereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 17th of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twentyeight. It is witnessed by: Joseph Mitchell Jur. Irene Mitchell Eliphaz Bigelow My question is, does anyone know what happened to Caleb CARTER's bible? Is anyone out there descended from Levi CARTER b) ca. 1777, possibly VA, d) 1840-50 Coles Co., IL. Levi was s/o Caleb CARTER b) ca 1750, don't know where, d) 1828, Champaign County, OH. There are a couple of Caleb CARTER's found in the places where our Caleb lived and we are searching for parents of Caleb. Could the Caleb CARTER bible, left to his son Levi CARTER, hold the key? 1. Simon & Elizabeth Lackey Gilbert
    2. John Vice
    3. Am asking for any help anyone on this mailing list may give me on Simon & Elizabeth Lackey Gilbert who were residents of Coles Co., Illinois starting about 1827. Simon Gilbert was born about 1778, the son of Isaac Gilbert of Madison County, Kentucky. Simon married Elizabeth Lackey in Madison Co., Kentucky on Sept. 20, 1802. Simon later served in the War of 1812 from Kentucky for which service he received a pension. Sometime after Simon's father's death (Isaac Gilbert) in 1827, he moved to Coles Co., Illinois. Simon died in Coles Co., Illinois on September 29, 1851. Elizabeth continued to receive a pension and she died sometime after 1855. There was probably children by this marriage, but I haven't found any as of yet. Does anyone know of any children & descendants of Simon & Elizabeth Lackey Gilbert? Also, does anyone know of a burial location for Simon & Elizabeth? Will be glad to exchange what information I have about this family. Thanking all of you very much in advance, John Vice (of Fleming Co., Ky.) Gilbert? Alos
