Evelyn, Thanks so much for taking the time to help me! We struck gold, in that John ABSTON who married Mrs. Anna BUTTS is my direct ancestor. I did not have their marriage date, so I am in your debt. Vada Try Ashmore which is in Coles co. I thought it was strange in a article in a newspaper my GG Grandfather wrote in 1902 he spoke of his "Ashmore Farm" I thought he had named it but I guess not, it is a township. He also lived in Charleston , so it was confusing to me that he had a big home in Charleston and a farm in Ashmore and Lerna. Is there anyone out there researching surnames: DOLE, DORA, SHIVELY, BROHM??? Sincerely Tiffany Luchetta TLuchetta@aol.com
Hi Vada, According to my list of cemeteries in Coles county, there is no Upper Ash Church. In checking the GNIS, I didn't find an Upper Ash Church or Cemetery. The closest I could find is an Ash Grove Cemetery in Shelby county. Hope this helps! I saw a recent (April 6) post on ILCOLES where a volunteer offered to do lookups in several of the Coles Co Genealogical Society's (CCGS) Publications, including the Prairie Sleeps series, Volumes I-IV. I would like to commend anyone for having purchased the books. And also for having offering to share the contents of them with others. Thank you for your courtesy! :)) I am currently serving on the Board of Directors for the CCGS, and have PROPOSED that a project be initiated to collect additional information to supplement the information contained in the Prairie Sleeps series. I have not encountered any negative feelings about beginning such a project, other than it would be a major, long-term project. If this project is begun, it will need to be a combined effort of everyone who has data to contribute. Judging by your apparent interest in Coles County history, (you are subscribed to ILCOLES !), I would like to extend to you the request to make notes of any VERIFIABLE ERRORS or OMMISSIONS that you can identify in any of the Prairie Sleeps series. Obviously, only those persons who own, or have read the Prairie Sleeps series would be knowledgeable about any such errors or ommissions. I visualize that for any additions or corrections to have value, and to merit the time necessary to enter them into some form of database so that the "new" information can be made available, on demand, in a report, any information submitted for inclusion in the proposed addendum (it currently has no definite name) would need to be somehow identified with the contributor's name and a specific source reference. Specific details about the actual execution of such a project have not been defined at this time, but I have a rough idea about how I would do it. Probably by entering the submitted data into my Genealogical Software program (Brother's Keeper (BK)). I can link the source of each and every bit of data to that data very easliy by using BK. I can link persons together. But most important to me is that I can create and print a custom report containing the names of persons buried in a cemetery WITHOUT HAVING TO RETYPE A LONG (?) LIST! To illustrate my point about errors and ommissions, I have been working on a compilation of the persons buried in Mt Tabor Cemetery in Pleasant Grove Twp, Coles Co, IL. I have attempted to access any and all sources available to secure as much information as can be found. The Prairie Sleeps listed a total of 471 names. My compilation currently lists 596. As most researchers well know, sources exist by many names. Birth and Death records can be located for many persons at the County Courthouse. Sometimes not! Family Bibles are an important source. Personal knowledge is a good source. The list goes on. Obits and other newspaper clippings (birth, marriage, anniversary). Family historian's records. Family researcher's records. Verbal family tradition sometimes fills in some gaps. etc. What I am wanting to do is begin a collection of ANY and ALL "NEW" information about the BIRTH and DEATH dates of persons who either died or are buried in Coles Co. I am defining "NEW" to mean any data which is not now CORRECTLY AND/OR COMPLETELY listed in the Prairie Sleeps series. THEREFORE, at this time I am requesting for all interested persons who have discovered any errors or ommissions in the Prairie Sleeps series, to send to me any of the following which would supplement OR replace what can now be found in the the Prairie Sleeps. Legal Name First, Middle, Last, and any commonly used nickname Birth Date Day, Month, Year plus Location of birth, if known Death Date Day, Month, Year plus Location of death, if known Burial Date Name of Coles County Cemetery Now then, the plot thickens! IF you have additional information available on a person, I would like to be able to identify the following also. Remembering that the starting point is a person who is buried in a Coles Co Cemetery. Parents' names Spouse's name All spouses, if multiple marriages This additional information is important for placing a person in a family group to help identify if other siblings, or parents and children are buried in the same cemetery. Any comments or contributions should be sent to me at the following address. All contributions should identify specific sources for each item. mrbill William A. Helen Yes this is the Parker family that I am talking about. I was born & raised in Limestone Co. TX. where the Indians killed the Parkers & captured Cynthia Ann. My Lindley/Sadler family came to TX in 1833 also from Shelby/Coles Co. ILL. I am trying to find out if my 3rd G Grand Father Joseph Ferguson is the Joe Ferguson who is said to have led the Parker Train to TX. Pat Oates in TX. Elder John Parker Had sons James , Benjamine, Daniel & several more. They came from Coles Co. ILL in 1833 to TX. with a Pilgrim Baptist Church which they formed in ILL. This church was also called the Two Seed Predestination Baptist. I find a Simon Lindley who stayed in ILL as connected to this church. I have a little more on this Parker bunch but it is all from TX. Pat Oates in TX.
Hi List Members I just joined this list & wonder if anyone is working the same lines I am. The above left this area in 1833 & came to TX. Pat Oates in TX.
I have the Coles Co census 1850,1860,1870; Coles Co. Marriages 1831-1890; All four Volumes of "The Prairie Sleeps"(burials); Coles Co. History 1879. I will be happy to do lookups . Please give as much detail as possible....and be patient. The marriages and burials are not indexed. They are in alphabetical order....marriages by year....burials by cemetery....so it takes a little time. Also it is Spring and yard working time! Hello everyone. I'm one of those subscribers who goes on and off the list and right now I'm on:). I am a genealogist for my Hackett branch of the family who were known to be in Hittesville Twp by 1850 (census info). I'm looking for anyone who is descended from them. The line follows: Hacket, John - 58 - KY - Farmer - 300 Elizabeth - 54 - VA Amanda - 32 - KY Merrill - 28 - KY Armelda - 26 - KY Melinda - 23 - KY Susan - 17 - IL Wilelma - 15 - IL Lucy A. - 13 - IL David - 11 - IL Robert - 9 - IL Wells, Elizabeth - 21 - KY George Ann - 1 - IL They were not listed in the 1840 census for Coles Co., but it is fairly obvious, if they gave the right info, that they were somewhere in IL. I am descended from John and Elizabeth (Murphy) thru their son Oliver Cromwell Hackett who was born in 1822, but I am interested in ANY info from this line. I would like to document this line as much as possible, all their descendants, not just Oliver's line. Also, I am the Hackett list master so I have a general interest in the Hackett surname as a whole. Oh, and if you follow the homepage address below, there is a Hackett section. I would like to contact some of the following family (cousins) if possible and thought that someone on this list might know of them. My mother remembers Joy and Jewell from her childhood and would love to talk to them. I told her I would see if I could find them. Here is some of the information I have on the Brown family. Fountain's daughter Joy Jewell married Wm Brandt in MS and according to Fountains war records she was later living in Carmi IL in 1947. It is possible she is still living and hopefully has children now living. She married Wm Brandt at the age of 16. I suppose there is a chance they have divorced. Jewel Jermain married a man with the surname Wright. I'm just not sure how to go about finding them so I thought if I posted to the lists in the last areas they were known to live in that maybe I would be lucky and someone would recognize them and be able to help me contact them. I would appreciate any ideas or input.
