In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors >disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people -- and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. 1. [ILCOLES-L] PETERSONs in Coles County
    2. Susan Kaye
    3. Hello, everyone! I'm a new subscriber, looking for PETERSON families who lived in Coles County about 1877. My husband's great-grandfather John Albert Peterson was born in Mattoon Township about that time (according to his son's birth certificate), and we're still trying to find a birth record for him. (Or death certificate ... or marriage notice .... or ... ) It's quite possible the family relocated to the Chicago area soon after this child was born. Would especially like to find out John Albert Peterson's parents' names and where they came from ... and eventually whether there is any connection to the Samuel Peterson who appears in the 1840 Federal Census of Illinois. John Albert married Goldie Geraldine CLEVER (probably in Chicago) about 1898-1900. Their second child, John Albert Jr., was born in Chicago in 1901; the first child may have been a daughter. We'll be passing through Coles County in a couple of weeks to do some research into this family mystery, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to offer us suggestions on the best places to go to find basic vital records information. Am looking forward to hearing from you all! Sincerely, Suzan Kaye Mountain Home, AR spkaye@mtnhome.com

    3. Hi all, If Tricia is talking about Karen Zike, then I too will give any information on her, as I do know her very well. However, you must keep in mind that, while Karen is very good at what she does, she is also *extremely* swamped. We've had a problem with people writing to several people at one time (ie, me, Karen, County Clerk, Genealogical Society, etc.), which means that duplicate people are doing duplicate work, and this constitutes a serious waste of time for the people doing the research. So, my caution to all of you is....be patient. Write only to one person at a time before you write to someone else. One recent situation found 5 people doing the same work, and then, the other day, a 6th person was found to be doing the same work all for just one person. All 5 of the orignal contacts know each other, but, unfortunately, not before time and money had been spent. This has caused a lot of resentment and frustration for all of us, which is the main reason why I quit doing lookups for people, as I too am in Charleston. So, I can only caution all of you to be patient and only write to ONE person at a time. If any of you would like information on Karen, please e-mail me privately. Thanks! 2. A note to the list: When I offered to help Lynne, I said I would ask my contact in Coles Co if she was interested in doing work for Lynne. I am not in Coles Co. I have a number of ancestors there like many others. I have little or no information other than a contact who charges $15/hr plus costs, i.e. $7 a copy for a certified birth, death or marriage record. I would love to be able to help all those who saw my message to Lynne but I cannot as I am 1500 mi away from Coles Co. myself. Good luck to htose who are searching. I will ask my contact if she is willing to take on several more clients. If so, I will post a contact method here. Thank you. Bill Boyle

    1. [ESTILLKY-L] Allen/Hollingsworth/Stephens/Robertson Help!
    2. Jen Bawden
    3. Hi everyone, Well, I'm trying in vain to flesh out my Allen side of the family and need your help. Jefferson Allen and Mary Hollingsworth were married in Clay Co. in 1860. They had three children, Richard, Sophia & Narcissus. They are found on the 1870 & 1880 Clay Co. census. They moved to Estill Co. sometime between 1880 - 1883 as 2 of the children were married then with the third marrying in 1887. Evidentally, Mary died or they got divorced as Jefferson is listed on the 1900 census with a new wife, Lucinda. They are listed as the parents of a Brownlo Allen age 5. Jefferson died 11 Mar 1918 in Estill Co. and is buried in Pea Ridge Cemetery. Richard married Louisa Brinegar on 15 Mar 1883 in Estill Co. They had several children and divorced by 1898. Richard is believed to have gone back to Clay Co., supposidly married a Patience Sandlin, and Louisa married a George Williams. Sophia married Nelson Stephens on 1 Apr 1883 in Estill Co. I found a Nelson Stephens listed on the 1880 Estill Co. census. He was 17 at the time, living in the household of Nancy Stephens, 40, with another young man, John, who was 14. Narcissus married William H. Robertson on 2 Jan 1887 in Estill Co. Now for question and answer time: 1. Does anyone know who Lucinda was? There is another child living in the house, listed as a daughter, by the name of Sarah Sloane who was 16. She's not one of Jefferson's children. 2. Does anyone know who this Nelson Stephens is? 3. The daughters and their husbands aren't shown on the 1900 Estill, Jackson, Owsley or Lee censuses. Does anyone know what happened to them? Did they go back to Clay Co. as their brother did? 4. Does anyone know what happened to Mary Hollingsworth Allen? Thanks so much for any help you can give me on this. Jen Jen Bawden jenbawden@home.com ______________________________ --------------------

    1. [ESTILLKY-L] Fw: [KYHARLAN-L] FW: Stolen Tombstones for Sale? Maybe
    2. --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Arkley & Kathy" <arkley@castles.com> To: KYHARLAN-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 13:00:51 -0700 Subject: [KYHARLAN-L] FW: Stolen Tombstones for Sale? Maybe Message-ID: <000001be959f$a5272fa0$3bf7aa26@kathy> To ALL: All of us need to contact e-bay and protest this kind of auction. They are selling our ancestors cemetery markers! This is not an appropriate auction item! If this gets to be a trend as a collectable none of our ancestors will be at rest under their hard earned recognition of service. Protest to e-bay! Tell them NO WAY! If we as a community speak up we may be able to slow this cemetery robbery down. See item for sale! This one is still available: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=96875810 others down at bottom of text for viewing also. It makes me want to cry. Send this on to those you think would care enough to protest this act of desecration. Sorry to all list owners if this breaks any of your posting rules. But it is genealogy related. If anyone must comment on this to anyone. Do it to e-bay! 3. My 2nd and 3rd ggfs, Oliver Perry Tifft and George Tefft, died in Coles Co. in 1861 and 1851, respectively. Their probate files contained quite a few names of people who either had claims against the estate or bought items at the estate sale. I thought it might be useful to list the names in case anyone is looking for these folks. Needless to say, some of the writing is difficult to decipher. I will do a few at a time as time allows. I would appreciate a reply if anyone knows who these people are. >From Perry Tifft's Estate file: James McCrory, Clerk, c.c.c. Levi P. Temlin (Temblin?), J.P. Lewis R. Hutchinson Benj. M.
