Union Banner, Carlyle, IL, Nov 5, 2005, Page 2a/Col 4 Leora H. Varel, 77 Leora H. Varel, 77, of St. Rose died Thursday, Oct. 30th, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born on December 31st, 1925, in St. Rose, the daughter of Theodore and Gertrude Kampwerth Schrage, and they preceded her in death. On June 20th, 1953, at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose, she married John Varel, her husband of 50 years, and he survives in St. Rose. Also surviving are four sons, John Varel of Waluku, Hawaii, Allan Varel of Damiansville, Joe Varel of Troy and Ken Varel of Columbia; two daughters, Trudy Strieker of Collinsville and Dianne Voss of Highland; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Leander and Alex Schrage, both of St. Rose, and Ted Schrage of Pocahontas; and a sister, Bernice Wellen of Highland. Mrs. Varel was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Altar Sodality, Ladies Choir, Daughters of Isabella Precious Blood Circle 718 and Catholic Fraternal Life. She was employed for many years as a cook at St. Rose School. Funeral Mass was conducted on Monday, Nov. 3rd, at 2 p.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church, with Fr. Edward Schaefer officiating. Interment was in St. Rose Cemetery-Visitation was at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
