"Gus" Vahlkamp, 89, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and formerly of Carlyle, died on Thursday, Oct. 20th, 2005, at Dobson Hospice Home in Chandler, Ariz., with his family by his side. Born on Nov. 25th, 1915, in Carlyle, he was the son of Stephen and Catherine Vahlkamp. On Sept. 4th, 1940, he married Alida Marcham at St Mary's Church in Carlyle. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sharon Miller and Betsy Mensing of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Gayle Thompson of Gilbert, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Albert, John, Ben and Fred Vahlkamp; and three sisters, Mame, Betty and Agnes. A World War II Army veteran and retired co-owner of Carlyle Lumber and Supply, he was a life member of the Carlyle Knights of Columbus Council 1382 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3523. The Rev. Father Pierre Hissey will preside at a memorial mass on Friday, Oct. 28th, at St. Steven's Church in Sun Lakes. Burial will follow in the Valley of the Sun Memorial Park, Chandler, Ariz.
