One of my favorite topics - land and pensions and bounty land for Rev War through various Indian Wars. [for Civil War and later, only pensions were given, not land] Bounty land *warrants* were issued to men who served in various ranks for varying periods of time, The last bounty land act was passed 1855. To get the 'award' [warrant] one had to meet the specs and file the bounty land warrant **application** papers If approved, the warrant [and sometimes script] was issued. This is what you have. Next the land had to be surveyed and located. Before 1852 warrants were not assignable - after that date the land could be assisgned or sold (which many were). People were locating their lands even into the early 1900s! Your warrant is dated 1806 - the warrant should state the ACT under which it was issued [could be 1806 and would be for Rev War] but if not, look for this on the Warrant, plus the number of acres. This info is what you need to order the actual **surrendered warrant** in Record Group 49 in Gen. Land Office. Surrendered warrants are important because the back side would show if an original awardee signed over the warrant to the man who then located the land. If in fact Jack B T Edmonds son of Captain Thomas Edmonds was the original claimant, then the bounty land warrant **application** file should provide some wonderful genealogical data. It might be for Rev War service - an Act of 1806 was passed for this and heirs could claim for the soldier many years after the fact You can order two files from the National Archives based on warrants issued. 1. Form 84 for **surrendered bounty land warrant** --send to National Archives (online order fastest) http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-84.pdf 2. Record Group 15 Records of Veterans Admin - bounty land warrant **application** -- if for Rev War, all are filmed on M804 and apparently Footnote.com has these films imaged and online (so quickest). HeritageQuest has M805 online but these are only *select* records, not the entire package. --or send request to the National Archives Explore this http://archives.gov/research/order/ YOu willget to this page http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-records.html and in the yellow box Military Pension/Bounty Land Warrant Applications Form 85 - order Number 3 - the complete file. Diane Thank you so much for the interesting reply. I am glad this is one of your favorite topics. I knew and still no nothing about these Land Warrants but by the time I get through all you sent me to look and I should hope I know something. I can see that is not a 15 min lookup, and since I am still on Dial UP it will probable be a long day to get to all the information you sent. I hope I can mail you if I get "stuck". Again thank you very much for your reply.
