ALL OF THE EARLY BELLEVILLE DIOCESE ONES ARE ONLINE. Maybe up to 1930, I didn't check. Maybe up to the last full book before 1930. - http://search.labs.familysearch.org in the email below. If someone would be able to translate them and put them into a searchable data base, that would be wonderful. -----Original Message----- From: ilclinto-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ilclinto-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Frank B. Great news about the Clinton Co. Catholic Churches (a part of the Belleville Diocese) records. Below are two emails from other-county-coordinators which apply to us, too. The search.labs people are looking for help in translating these. Is there anyone on the Clinton Co. list who would be willing to translate some of these? And is there a volunteer to be the Clinton County clearing house in the translation of these fantastic records to make sure that two people don't spend time transcribing the same records? We will need proofers, too. A couple might already be done. These images might be better than the originals at the churches. I remember one church where the originals are almost white because of faded ink, but I didn't see any white pages in these images. The Family History Centers often have a pamphlet to assist in translating Latin. Some of the church office administrators in Clinton County might have a copy for you to make a copy from. The FHC in O'Fallon usually has some for sale, they used to be 50 cents each. You could probably order them from the Salt Lake City Family Search, too. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp From: On Behalf Of Orvill S. DIOCESE OF BELLEVILLE (IL) - CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS - 1729-1956: One collection of particular interest to Illinois researchers are the Catholic Church records of the Diocese of Belleville. Although not yet indexed, the images to the parish records can be easily browsed from home on the internet. Browsable images are available for baptisms, first communions, confirmations (to 1907), marriages (to 1930) or deaths (to 1956). Records are available for the following IL counties: Alexander, Clay, Clinton, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Perry, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, St. Clair, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White & Williamson. I would strongly encourage c.c.'s for these IL counties to be aware of the availability of these records to researchers for your counties. Please help spread the word! ILGenWeb Coordinator ========================== Hello to all, These digitized diocesan records are in part, the culminating efforts of the local genealogy society in St Clair County (SCCGS). Back in 2001 the local St. Clair Gen Society negotiated release of pre-1930 sacramental records for free public use at society expense. The diocesan offices are based in St. Clair County. Read more history here http://www.stclair-ilgs.org/cath.htm During that process, some on the project became aware of the diocese's need/wish to refilm all the registers, and project persons encouraged the diocese to work with the Gen Soc of Utah to do the filming.( GSU runs the filming projects appearing on the http://labs.familysearch.org site GSU is a nonprofit organization created by The Corporation of the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) . Longer story short, the digitized registers for some years are now online for free use by and we in southern Illinois are delighted! I am the cc for St Clair, and also webmaster for the St Clair Co Gen Soc. There is not yet a FamilySearch Lab project to index the parish registers to my knowledge. We could use the Parish Finding Aids and Descriptive Lists on the SCCGS webpage to announce who has an index in progress (helps get more volunteers and avoids duplicating another's efforts). Link above. If you or someone on your county Lists completes an index to the online parish register images, I'd be happy to post a link to your page, or upload your index to either St Clair website of your choice. The IL USGenWeb State website would also be a good place to show such links. One caveat: some of the indexes prepared by a parish are incomplete, so any private indexing or extraction project is best accomplished by viewing the actual register (in other words, transcriptions of the digital index would not be comprehensive) Diane Walsh St Clair GenWeb Project cc StClairCoord@compu-type.net

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ArthurBurch308 Surnames: BURCH, CORNELIUS, MARCHAM, JENKINS, CECIL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.clinton/430.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I don't think it's unusual for your father to be named after his maternal grandparents ... many people used this naming technique. In my case, I've often thought it unusual that my aunt (Ruby Cornelius BURCH) had a masculine middle name. When I saw your posting about your CORNELIUS ancestors, I immediately considered the possibility of a marriage among our ancestors, especially since both families seem to have migrated from Virginia to Clinton Co., Illinois. I've spent the last couple of days, researching your CORNELIUS ancestry ... trying to find some clue to a possible link to my BURCH's. I've gone over the Census Records for 1840-1920, but so far nothing to help me. I did notice a couple of things, though, that may help you, but you've probably already noticed them yourself. 1) The 1840 Census for Clinton Co. lists J.W. CORNELIUS (age 40-50), 1 male (under 5), 1 male (5-10), and 1 female (20-30). 2) The 1850 Census for Clinton Co. lists John MARCHAM (age 40), Mary MARCHAM (age 34), George CORNELIUS (age 18), and Joseph CORNELIUS (age 14). 3) I think it's pretty obvious that George and Joseph are sons of J.W. CORNELIUS. My questions: Is Mary MARCHAM the woman you mentioned as maybe J.W.'s wife (her age fits)? If so, what do you make of the apparent 20 year difference in their ages? Maybe Mary was a 2nd wife, and possibly step-mother of George and Joseph. Did J.W. die between 1840-1850, and she re-married John MARCHAM? 4) The 1860 Census for Clinton Co. lists Joseph CORNELIUS living with James and Mary JENKINS. I didn't find George? 5) The 1870 Census for Clinton Co. lists Joseph, with wife Martha, and children Daniel and Mary. 6) The 1880 Census for Clinton Co. lists Martha (Joseph died in 1876) with 6 children: D.J., Mary, B., Joni, Robert, & Katie, with Anna CECIL (can't read this relationship). In your message, you include Anna CECIL as one of Daniel's siblings, along with Barney, Josephine, Robert, Mary, Gracie, Ben, and Katie (making a total of 9 children). Joseph's obituary mentions only 5 children (Katie born after he died?). It's obvious that D.J. is Daniel, Mary is Mary, and Robert is Robert. Joni is probably Josephine, but where do the others fit in? The 1880 Census has B., but is this Barney or Ben, and I see no Gracie? Did Joseph and Martha have these other children, who died/missed the Census? 7) So far, I haven't found any of these CORNELIUS's in the 1900 Census, but found Daniel and his family in Evansville, Indiana in 1910 and 1920. According to these Census', Daniel and Ella apparently were in Colorado, where their 1st daughter was born. I don't know whether any of this helps you or not, but hopefully it does. If you can share any further info about your CORNELIUS ancestry, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you again. I would especially appreciate anything you might come across that would suggest a BURCH-CORNELIUS connection. Thanks for anything you can share. Does anyone know anything about the marriage of Martha Krost and Orley Curlee Justic/Orley Curtis Justice? The Trenton Sun has him listed as Orley Curlee Justic and the Clinton County Courthouse marriage record has him listed as Orley Curtis Justice. The marriage took place November 24, 1905.
