    1. [ILCLINTON] A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE STATE LIBRARY OF FLORIDA, THE DIVISION OF HISTORY
    2. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE LAFAYETTE, LA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY I meant to bring this up at the meeting last night and didn't, I'm sorry to say. This is the article I sent you several weeks ago and I wanted to resend it for you to be aware of this terrible destruction of History. Can you imagine this happening to us and it can, all it takes is the stroke of a pen. We are proud of our history and even tho' Florida isn't an adjoing state we once were part of it. That means some of our "Florida Parishes" history will be lost too. Please reread this plea for our help and there is a 2nd letter at the end with an address to sign a petition to stop this. Also can you forward this to everyone you know that values their past and get them to help. Thanks, Belva & Donald From: Julie Hesson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 2:17 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ROUSH-L] Re: FLORIDA LIBRARY AT RISK HEADS UP!! FLORIDA'S REPUTATION IS GOING SOUR!!! From: Nancy B Clark Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 11:51 AM Subject: FLORIDA LIBRARY AT RISK Hello Everyone! This forwarded email (below) was sent to me by my daughter, Pam Cooper, who is the President of the Florida State Genealogical Society and is very involved in anything and everything that is "about Florida". She is also the Genealogical Librarian at the Indian River County Library in Vero Beach, Florida, so you can see she has a very special interest in this situation. Pam also wants all researchers and genealogists that I know - no matter where they live - to be aware of this situation, so I hope you don't mind my sending this to you. We would also love to have your comments and to know that you are sending your comments to the Florida Governor (email address below). The proposal by Governor Jeb Bush of Florida to dismantle the Florida State Library is atrocious and should be stopped immediately. I am sending this memo of Pam's to the people that I know on my own email address book who would be most interested in this kind of project, including many of you who live in Canada. We simply cannot allow the governments of our states, provinces and federal governments to run our lives according to what THEY think is best for us as it usually is not the "best" as far as we are concerned. So let's get behind Pam and the FSGS and STOP THIS PROPOSAL OF GOVERNOR BUSH Send your emails and letters to the Governor and the Florida State Legislators and tell them they cannot allow this to happen in Florida, as it could very well happen in the rest of the country too! Nan Clark Grafton, Wisconsin USA Mom: Do you belong to some listservs that you can forward this to? We need the help of the whole country and the world, if possible! Florida's Historical Treasures Are at Risk Pam Cooper, FSGS President The Florida State Genealogical Society board has unanimously approved joining a coalition to oppose Governor Bush's proposed budget regarding the dismantling of the Florida State Library and Archives. The coalition currently consists of the following organizations: Florida Historical Society Florida Archaeological Council Florida Anthropological Society Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Florida Association of Museums We are asking for help of all genealogists, historians and researchers throughout the U.S. If this can happen in our state, it can happen in yours too. Please write, email, or fax the Florida legislators. Make our legislators aware of this serious error that they are about to commit. We cannot lose Florida's treasures. Send letters, faxes and e-mails to: Governor Bush, The Capitol, Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001, Telephone: (850) 488-4441, FAX (850) 487-080 E-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Emails and addresses for the House of Representatives and Senators can be found at http://www.leg.state.fl.us/. Facts 1. The Governor has proposed for the 2003-4 budget ZERO dollars for the State Library and Information Services Division. http://www.ebudget.state.fl.us/ 2. It has been proposed that the State Library be eliminated and holdings transferred to Florida State University in Tallahassee by July 1. 3. The proposed budget cuts $17.6 million from FSU's state funding and President T. K. Wetherell said "The way it looks is that someone wants us to assume a responsibility but with no money (provided)." In addition, FSU has limited parking, and their own library is lacking so much space that they use warehouses for some of their holdings. The FSU library would need to hire more staff to facilitate the book processing and increased reference questions, and at the same time reduce their expenditures. 4. The Florida State Library and Archives Division is now part of the Department of State, and is responsible for the State Library, the State Archives, state record keeping and library development services/grants programs for public libraries throughout the state. 5. The proposal for the Bureau of Archives and Records Management is for the Records Management responsibilities to become a part of the Department of Management, and for the State Archives to fall under the parks department of the Department of Environmental Protection. 6. The FloridaMemory.com project will be in jeopardy. This site now contains the photographic collection (over 90,00 pictures), Florida Pension Application Files, Spanish Land Grants, Call and Brevard Family Papers, and many more documents of Florida's early history. 7. The Governor's budget must not pass the Florida Legislature. Session will begin March 4. We still have time to change the tide. For more detailed information go to the Records Preservation & Access Web Site: http://www.fgs.org/rpa/FlCurrent.htm Thank you. Pam Cooper FGS/FSGS 2003 Conference Co-Chair http://www.fgs.org President, Florida State Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/ Chair, Librarians Serving Genealogists http://www.cas.usf.edu/lis/genealib/ P. O. Box 7066 Vero Beach, FL 32961-7066 I received this today. EVERYONE PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION!!!!!!!!! A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE STATE LIBRARY OF FLORIDA, THE DIVISION OF HISTORY This is the issue I wrote all of you about the terrific Florida Gov. "Duh" Bush proposing to close the state library and put $.00 in the budget for it's upkeep. The Florida Historical Society has created this website to collect electronic signatures for a petition about the State Library of Florida closing. The petition will be sent to the governor and members of the State Legislature on February 28, 2003. Please go to the site and sign the petition even if you do not live in Florida. Please forward to anyone you think might be as concerned as we are. Thanks a bunch. This is a hot issue: http://www.floridahistory.info/petition/?lang=eng#namelist

    1. [ILCLINTON] More than you wanted to know about Marriage Licenses
    2. Dorothy Falk
    3. Hi, Mary, All of the above. The County Clerk has his original ledgers, of course. Many of his responses to "you" can only be a copy of those ledger pages. I do believe he has copies of some marriage licenses for a few years, but you know the law of averages - those probably won't be for the years you need. There are no parents' names in the ledger books until the end of December 1877, the law changed 1 Jan 1878 to require parents' names, etc. Chances are you won't be allowed to look at the ledger books past 1916, or some other early year, but I think he will furnish a copy of later document, especially if you have some genealogy papers in your hand proving you are researching that name. His fees for copying are at http://www.clintonco.org/clerk_county.htm and are $7.00 for a certified copy. IRAD has copies of those same ledgers from 1825 through 1937 at http://www.ilsos.net/cgi-bin/archives/irad.s and then County: Clinton. There office is run by students from the university and their fees are only for copying costs. There are microfilmed copies of those same ledgers available through any Family History Center throughout the world, you can rent the film for $3.50. There is one copy permanently at the O'Fallon, Illinois center, you may use it free. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?dis play=localitydetails&subject=198426&subject_disp=Illinois,_Clinton&columns=* ,180,0 If that URL won't come up, then go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp and call up: Place Search Place: Illinois the blue "Illinois" gray "View Related Places" Illinois - Clinton call up each category there - marriages are under vital records call up couple more on marriages and then the gray "See Film Notes". Of those microfilms, the 1825 through 1920 marriages are in the State index of marriages. I have another 4 years indexed but unproofed at home that I'd be glad to check for anyone that has a name they think might be in that time frame. If anyone wanted to proof this piece of the index or to expand the earlier index to include all of the ages, parents, places of birth, witnesses, etc, I'd be glad to give them my index data base to use as a starting point. And, what I've never mentioned before, the Clinton County Historical Society has a small ledger book that is the original marriage licenses for about 4 years somewhere in the early 1900's, I think. So if you are ever in there, check that book that sits vertically in the big bookkeeping (?) desk in the second room. This one is not on any of the microfilms. Now! Wasn't that fun! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ig.2ADE/52.1.1 Message Board Post: We are related. Your father is my cousin. My father was Lloyd Durtsche (1920-1970), Elsie Durtsche Schrage's brother. My mother, Nina Moore Durtsche (1926-1998) was John Schrage's niece: my grandmother, Bessie Schrage Moore, was John's eldest sister. I have quite a bit of information, especially going back on the Sarah Jane Littleton Wiles side. I am now skeptical that the Christina Schrage born in Hanover-Germanton, IL is the same person. The 1880 Census lists Henry and Christena Schrage as both being born in Prussia.

    1. [ILCLINTON] 1865 Census
    2. Dorothy Falk
    3. Carol has added 20 pages of Bob Schroeder's transcription of the 1865 Clinton County, Illinois census online, and has also added an alphabetical index. The phonic spelling is pretty bad in some cases, so the alphabetical index should be helpful. Tell Carol or me if you know what some of the names really are, we'll update the listing if we can. Nancy Burton has volunteered to transcribe five more pages. That leaves 40 pages to go if you'd like to volunteer. I now have paper copies of the microfilmed pages to send to volunteers. Tell me the surnames you are researching and I'll see if I can find any pages with those names. Most of the pages do not have any geographic location although there are 3 or 4 that say Trenton and maybe 2 that say Town of Shoal Creek, which might be Breese. And speaking of volunteers, Deborah Bay has volunteered to transcribe the 1930 census index for Breese and Breese Township. Only 16 townships left. Thanks, Deborah, Pamela, Jennifer and Carol. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilclint2/1930census/index.htm Enjoy. Dorothy and Carol and Bob

The first was that of the Catholic Church Mr. VEITH who built the church, borrowed some money from P.J. HURK of St. Louis, to pay for some material &c., and gave his note for the same; the bishop securing the note by a deed of trust on the church. The note was not paid and Mr. HURK had the church sold under the deed of trust, buying it for the sum of seven hundred seventy five dollars. The second sale was that of the farm and residence of Samuel A. REPPY, to John MATLOCK of Pike county, Arkansas for $25,000.00. Mr. REPPY has been lucky in disposing of his place at a good price, though we cannot say that he got any too much for it.

    3. There is a copy of the microfilm available in the Springfield, IL Archive Library. I have a special copy of that microfilm and it includes the 1855 census on it if anyone wants to volunteer to transcribe either the 1855 or the remainder of 1865. I've already told Evelyn that I could probably meet her at the South County library and let her browse through the microfilm while she is visiting in this part of the country. Same offer holds true for anyone else - as long as time frames don't overlap, of course. Or I'll try to print copies of some of the pages for any volunteers. Phyllis, When you check these church records also check for a child's Baptism if they had any children in that area. Sometimes the priest would include little tidbits of information about the parents. There just might be a clue as to when and where they came from in those records. They are truly treasures. Thanks to Diane and all the helpers who edited them to get that project done. Gloria

    3. Hi, Phyllis, For both your Kues and your Venhaus queries - do you live near by that you could go to either the Belleville Public Library or the St. Louis South County Library and check the Catholic Churches microfilm that is only available at those two spots? If the St. Francis's Church records are readable, you might find a treasure trove. On the other hand, you might not find anything new. Do you have a feel for when they arrived in Clinton County? In our county, there was one clerk in the county Clerk's office that made his "u's" and "n's" identical, so I'd recommend you check on Knes, too, that includes the State marriage data base. 2. I am trying to find out any information on Gerhard Kues (b. 6/12/1851 and d. 9/9/1931). He married a Wilhelmina Toeben-otke (b. 1/21/1859 and d. 4/23/1944). I Know the names of their children. What I am looking for is their brothers or sisters and anyone else related to them. I have traced Gerhard Kues back to Germany and have discovered his parents names but Wilhelmina Toeben-otke is very hard to find any information on. They were both born in Germany but both died in Aviston, IL. Any information would be appreciated. Phyllis (Kues)Stroud
