    1. Re: [ILCLINTON] Virus - wrong - HOAX
    2. I realize that this is not geneologically appropriate but a word to the wise...before you go and delete anything of off your harddrive you should always double check and make sure that you haven't received notification about a virus hoax.  There are a number of those floating around that tell people to remove files off of their hard drive which are necessary. Go to one of the virus software websites such as McAffee or Norton or even do a search on Virus Hoaxes and make sure that this really is a virus first.... Just ran a search and found the following on Norton's website: Jdbgmgr.exe file hoax Reported on: April 12, 2002 Last Updated on: July 19, 2003 02:47:09 AM   Symantec Security Response encourages you to ignore any messages regarding this hoax. It is harmless and is intended only to cause unwarranted concern. Type: <A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/refa.html#hoax">Hoax</A> This hoax, like the<A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html">SULFNBK.EXE Warning hoax</A>, tries to encourage you to delete a legitimate Windows file from your computer. Jdbgmgr.exe is the file to which the hoax refers, and it is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. The Jdbgmgr.exe file may be installed when you install Windows. Notes: Some versions of this hoax take advantage of an actual threat, the <A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]"> [email protected]</A> worm. The Jdbgmgr.exe file mentioned in the hoax has a bear icon. The actual <A HREF="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]">[email protected]</A> worm file is a .exe file and does not have a bear icon. Other versions of this hoax have slightly different ways in which they refer to the Jdbgmgr.exe file, usually in the subject of the email message. For example: Subject: "jdbg" Virus: how to detect and remove. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html Tracy in AK In a message dated 7/28/03 6:20:09 AM Alaskan Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Subj: [ILCLINTON] Virus > Date: 7/28/03 6:20:09 AM Alaskan Daylight Time > From: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> > Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> > To: <A HREF="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</A> > > Charlie just mailed this to me and I am doing what he told me and I did find > this teddy bear thing and I removed it. 1. [ILCLINTON] teddy bear virus
    2. Charlie just mailed this to me and I am doing what he told me and I did find this teddy bear thing and I removed it.  I hope I haven't done anything I shouldn't have.  You all know I am a little bit computer illiterate.  Mine was under my C drive. Thanks, Mary I just received this message from a fellow subscriber to a mailing list, and did in fact find the virus in my system, which I have since removed. I am very sorry for the inconvenience to each of you! Charles LaRobardier Hi everybody, I am really sorry to send you this but it seems that I was infected by a nasty virus.  Since this was in my computer and it attaches itself to all addresses in my address book, it is also on yours.  This was inadvertently sent to me by a friend because it was in her computer. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Nortoon or McAfee anitvirus systems.  The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system.  It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you sent an e-mail to your contacts. Here's how to check for the  virus and how to get rid of it: 1. go to start, find or search option. 2. in the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. be sure you search you C: drive and all subfolders and any other drives you may have 4. click "find now" 5. the virus has a Teddy Bear icon with name jdbgmgr.exe  DO NOT OPEN IT! 6. go to edit (on the menu bar) and choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it 7. now go to file (on the menu bar) and select delete.  It will then go to the Recycle Bin 8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS To do This: a) Open a new e-mail message b) Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO" c) Highlight every name and add to "BCC" (which means blind copy) d) Copy this message and paste to e-mail Sorry about this everybody, it was passed on to me by a friend who it was passed on to her by a friend.  This is not hard to get rid of but you have to be sure you do it right. Sorry guys! Bev and Jack Lavell I found it on my C drive Emmitt McClendon

    3. Hello everyone, Yes this is a true virus, but Rootsweb is bouncing all emails to this list that have the virus attached. I have received at least 10 bounces this morning. My virus scanner picked it up last week and deleted it. If you catch the virus it is not through this list. I agree with Laura, lets keep this list for genealogy only. 2. Due to the fact that many people may have relatives who once served in the Army and may have spent time at the Jefferson Barracks facility I am passing along some interesting information from Scott Williams with his permission. In a message dated 7/20/03 12:23:23 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Just uploaded some newly discovered aerial photography over Jefferson > Barracks dating back to the 1920s or early 1930s. 1. [ILCLINTON] Funeral Homes
    2. If you are starting to receive some funeral homes who no longer provide you with information the following article is probably the reason why. The National Funeral Directors Association published this in January 2001 as a result of our sue happy society. Funeral Homes who have provided information in the past are now closing their books to almost everyone. SCI Corporation/Dignity has followed this for a couple of years. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// GUARD AGAINST ILLEGAL DISCLOSURE OF FAMILY CONFIDENCES By: Scott Gilligen, NFDA General Counsel "One of the fastest growing hobbies in the United States is genealogy. Spurred on by Internet web sites such as familysearch.org offered by the Mormon church and genealogy.com. Americans have unprecedented access to records from which they can research the roots of their own family trees. "Of course, one of the best sources of local history for families is the funeral home. Many funeral homes have been in business for several generations and normally do not discard records or files of the individual they have served. Therefore, for many families, the funeral home is one of the primary sources for locating local roots of a family tree. "How should a funeral director respond when an individual requests access to the funeral home's files to do genealogy research? Should the funeral home permit members of the public to review all of the funeral home's files? Should that review be limited only to the files of deceased family members of the individual who is doing the research? If access is limited to family members, how does the funeral home determine who is and who is not a "family member"? For example, how may degrees of kinship will the funeral home permit the individual to search? "Beyond the inconvenience of having individuals rooting through funeral home files and the danger that an unscrupulous individual may misappropriate records from the files, the funeral home faces a significant legal liability when it permits public access to its records. "To protect against possible violations or legal action we recommend that funeral homes not permit genealogy researchers unlimited access to their records and files. This advisory extends even to requests by individuals to examine files of their own family. It is impossible for a funeral director to determine whether a confidence communication to funeral home personnel is a secret known throughout the family. "Funeral home files are the personal property of the funeral home. Family members do not have the right to review those files as they might with their own personal medical records. Therefore, absent a subpoena or other court order mandating disclosure of the files, the funeral home has a legal right to deny access to those records, even to family members. "Funeral homes that are concerned that genealogists will be offended by a policy prohibiting any examination of funeral home records might want to assemble an alphabetical compilation of the obituaries of the persons they have served. Since an obituary has been published, it becomes part of the public domain. Therefore, there is no liability to allowing a genealogist to peruse through a binder containing copies of all of the obituaries of the individuals the funeral home has served." 3. Hi, Pam, The days of the freebies are gone. Dog gone it. You have several ways to chose from now: The State of Illinois at http://www2.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/refform.html If I'm reading it correctly, looks like the pricing has changed again effective 1 Jul 2003. Maybe it's free for Illinois residents again and maybe it's $10 for two certificates for non-Illnois residents. Good time to have Illinois relatives. Be sure to read that "When may I expect a response to my request". They are now filling August 2002 requests. They only have info after 1916 when the laws changed. If you don't want to wait a year, and if the death date is between 1878 and 1916, and if you only want a copy of the death register pages, you could try the IRAD at http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/siumap.html Those same death registers have been microfilmed by the Church of Later Day Saints and can be rented at any Family History Center worldwide. There is a copy at the O'Fallon, IL FHC. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?dis play=topicdetails&subject=384062&subject_disp=Illinois,_Clinton_-_Vital_reco rds&columns=*,180,0 If that doesn't work, let me know. The registers do not normally list parents' names. If you only want the register information, and if there are just a couple of them, and if they are in the FHC microfilm range, I could look that information up for you on my next trip to the FHC. You can get a copy of the death certificate, or a copy of the register from the Clinton County Clerk in Carlyle http://www.clintonco.org/clerk_county.htm and then go to Genealogy. We have the unproofed index of the 1877 to 1903 registers at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilclint2/deathrec/index.htm There are a couple of people who make weekly trips to the Springfield archives and offer to look up the info for you. Cost ranges from $3 to $8 for their service. I don't have an email address right now, but if you want one, just ask. We'll update our web page to reflect this. So, please e-mail me with your list again. Carol & Dorothy: I plan on finishing up the census in the next week too. :-) Melody

    3. Hi Donna; I would love to share whatever information I have. It sounds like we could have some of the same Middleton's. I know that John Middleton lived around Ripley and Butler Co., MO. He was in the Amy. He married a girl named Sarah Rhodes in 1924 in Butler Co., A far as I know, there were no children, but that is not a positive. He moved to New Orleans, LA around 1956 and he lived there until he died on August 25, 1966. He was Police Officer in New Orleans. He also worked for the Railroad at one time. My grandfather, Willis Brown, his half brother worked for the St Louis-Frisco Railroad, so he may have worked for that one too. I am just getting going on the Middleton's. I have Armypapers for him and his marriage license to Sarah. John also has a daughter who lives in ILL, and grandkids who live there. On his death certificate and his Army papers,it said that he was divorced. I don't know if he was ever married again. He was living with a woman named Annie there in New Orleans the year before he died according to a letter I have that he wrote my grandfather. I have pictures of him also. He is buried in Hudson National Cemetery in Baton Rouge, LA. On the 1900 census, Charles and Elizabeth Middleton are living in Ripley Co., MO. AndJohn was born in Doniphan. On the 1910 census, they and John and William Brown, are living in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., MO. On the 1920 census, there is only Elizabeth, William and John. So I am assuming that Charles died in between 1910 and 1920. I am very interested in seeing what you have. Thanks a lot Maybe a Cousin?
