The school was named for Johnathan Webster,a man with a large family who lived in the neighborhood. The school served the community as a school and a church until 1884. The first building, a log structure, burned in 1876, and was replaced by a frame building the same year. William Howes and John Baker had the contract to build it. The Webster School was located about 10 miles East of Nauvoo and about 5 miles North of Ferris which is about 5 miles North of Carthage. The community of Webster was about 8 miles due East of Ferris. The Webster Cemetery is just South of St Albans Who was the Noah Webster who purchased land next to Jonathan in Hancock Co on the same day, 12 Feb 1855? Father? Brother? Since he is not with her in the 1870 Hancock County census perhaps he died in Jersey County or in the Civil War. Johnathan may have been from Frankfort, Franklin County Ky. In one record his name was John
