    3. NATIVE KENTUCKIANS WHO WERE HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS ENUMERATED IN THE 1850 CLAY CO., ILLINOIS, FEDERAL CENSUS: By John W. Tanner Of the 720 families enumerated in the 1850 Clay Co., IL. Federal Census, 143 male heads of households claimed to be natives of Kentucky, and 144 females, or 20%. This was a greater total than from any other state. However, 157 female heads of households claimed to be native of Indiana, but only 100 males. The next closest state represented with the greatest number of natives was Virginia, with 92 and 70 respectively. And though Clay Co. lies on the south edge of Central, IL., fully 50% of the heads of the families in that year were natives to southern of border states, including KY, TN, VA and NC. Sometime after the original census was copied in 1850, the pages in the original ledger were taken from the book and re-arranged. Consequently, nearly all of the first 32 pages of this census are either one page ahead, one page behind, or completely out of order. Where families were continued on a succeeding page, this caused the children of one family to be placed with the parents of another, or other family members to be placed with families to which they did not belong. I have therefore re-arranged these pages in what seems to be a reasonable order, and are so numbered in the following enumeration.
