Several researchers are trying to piece together the Cook(e) families that lived in Clay County and surrounding counties as early as 1840. If you have a Cook(e) ancestor on your family tree, please contact me. We will be glad to share what we have and will try to answer any questions. Thanks! Nancy delphenich@aol.com 15 March 1998

Ted's map posting's are great. I have so many Clay Co surnames so I went through the whole thing. A few times the server it is on would not let me access (maybe overwhelmed by the rest of you looking at the same time), but I just came back to it 5-10 minutes later and it was fine. Clay Co Surnames: THOMPSON, MATTINGLY, ALLEN, GILLEY, KRUTSINGER, PORTER, AND PHELPS Melissa Thompson Alexander Donald A. Thanks Linda, I love those new maps from Ted Cash. I found where Thomas Carrell lived, in 1865, over by Crooked Creek, in Sec 10 E1/2 SW1/4 of NW1/4 Don't you love genealogy of the 90's? Thanks again. Mary
Ray and C3 People :-), The 1881 map has a more detailed layout of each of the towns -- I just got lazy. If there's sufficient interest, I'll scan those in and figure out a way to link to them. There is also a list of "sponsers" and when they came to the county. Time, time, time... I had one report (verified) that there was a problem with the links in Bible Grove township, but that has been fixed. Any other problems, please let me know. To All C3 * People, * That still stands for Clay County Connected The map addition is an outstanding addition to the website and is quite an example of the power of the computer to link us to the past. I have not seen any other GenWeb county site that has anything like this. It is a more detailed map than the one I copied from the St. Louis City Library, dated 5 years earlier at 1876. That map covered the county with a little more of a birds-eye view, with each section of 640 acres clearly delineated but not with the detail of properties/owners within each section. A few names are placed in some of the sections, and wooded areas are shown on the older map. On the 1881 map , I was able to see the location of one of my ancestors, Wm. White's, farm and acreage east of Hoosier Prairie, including his home. The White Cemetary is shown on both maps. One nice feature of the earlier map is a detailed street plat of Louisville. Seems like it was bigger 125 years ago than now! Flora is also shown in detail. Ray Oliver in Missouri
Ted, Congratulations are to be extended to you and the Genealogical Society!! That 1881 map is just outstanding! Thank you all for all the hard work of making it easy for the rest of us! Tom McKnelly tommck@maqs.net

I have received from the Clay County Genealogical Society a copy of the pages from an 1881 Atlas of Clay County Illinois. It was then scanned in; broken into 1 mile squares (472 of them); and placed under the first page of the "Maps" option of the Clay Co website (see address below). Just click on the section of interest. The map shows who lives on each farm and the size of the property; the location of schools, towns, and cemeteries and some churches. Currently the index is NOT online. Maybe later. If you find any links that are bad, please let me know. I've tried to test most of them, but there are over 1800. Hello again! I have conflicting information here and was hoping one of you could help me out. I have a daughter of Samuel Colclasure and Elizabeth Baity down as MARY G. "MOLLY" COLCLASURE. I HAD her birthdate down as 2/9/1868 and death date down as 6/9/1922, but now someone gives me a book and it has Molly's death date down as 1954!!! I know she is buried in the Campground Cemetery in Xenia, IL. If someone has access to these Cemetery records and wouldn't mind looking this up for me I'd be eternally greatful! THANKS! Tricia
