    1. [ILCLAY-L] Clay Co IL Cemetery Index online
    2. Ted Cash
    3. FYI - The 2791 SURNAMES from "Cemetery Inscriptions of Clay County Illinois", transcribed by John W Tanner and published by the Richland County Genealogical and Historical Society is now online. Note: This is a surname index only! There are over 75000 actual names in the book. I received permission from both John Tanner and the RCGHS before proceeding. The information is available via the "Cemetery" page or by using Surname Helper and doing a search. If you haven't tried Surname Helper, you should -- it just might help you find information on a lost relative elsewhere in the state or nation. It can be accessed from the "Queries and Surnames" page, or directly from http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp/ Please let me know of any errors / omissions you find in the listing. What's next? Any volunteers to do something similar -- Census? Probate index? Marriages? Obituaries? Birth? -- does anyone out there have access to records, and some time? I would certainly be willing to help, but can't do it all. HELP. 1. [ILCLAY-L] Mattingly
    2. Don & Melissa Alexander
    3. Posting from the Medieval RootsWeb list: Please look at this information and let me know if it rings true - There is a family in France by name of de Matteneye corrupted to Matheny, Matney, de Mattenly and other variations in Europe. Can this information be proven. Is anyone familiar with these authors? Would more research be recommended and are early church records available in England? Thanks Norma Lewis >From book The Mattingly Family in Early America. by Herman E Mattingly. Pg 7, 8. Mattingley, as a Manor, which Alric held of King Edward as an "Alrod", belonged to Alsi, son of Brixi, in 1086, the date of the Domesday Book. Ellis, the owner in 1167, was apparently succeeded by Revelendus, Lord of Mattingley. Father Basil Mattingly's research reveals that Revelendus & his wife, Rose, had 3 sons, James de Oakley, Bartholomew de Oakley, & Stephen de Mattingley. Revelendus divided his possessions among his 3 sons. James de Oakley had a son, Hugh. This son, who probably died without issue, granted his part of Mattingley Manor to the Prior & Convent of Merton. Bartholomew de Oakley had a daughter Rose, who married Walter Rastall. Nevertheless, Bartholomew gave his inheritance in Mattingley to his brother, Stephen de Mattingley. In 1206 Stephen de Mattingley turned over part of his property to the Prior of Merton. His son Peter de Mattingley, in turn sold it to Geoffrey de Arundel. Eventually the Prior & Convent of Merton came into possession of all of the Manor of Mattingley. It was then merged into Holdshott, & is still part of that Manor. Thus ended the Manor of Mattingley. When the method of designation such as Stephen de Mattingley changed into Stephen Mattingley is not known. But the origin of the name is evident. The visitor to the town of Mattingley today should observe the Chapel there which is quite ancient & is said to be historically & architecturally noteworthy. Also of interest is the graveyard & Mattingley Lodge. As previously noted, the area in which the Saxon chief Matta, settled is in the northernmost part of the Co of Hampshire. Records seem to indicate that most of the members of the family moved north across the line into the Co of Berkshire. And it is in the latter Co that most of the early English records of the family are found. An example of this is found in the calendar of Berkshire Wills which gives the following: Thomas Mattingley (1545), John Mattingley (1558), Henry Mattingley (1568), Richard Mattingley (1570), Agnes Mattiingley (1577), John Mattingley, sen. (1597), Agnes Mattingley (1601), Stephen Mattingley (1601), Hugh Mattingley (1632), & Richard Mattingley (1638). Still other records are found in the Index Library issued by the British Record Soc., Ltd., from which the foregoing is taken. More records of Berkshire Co Mattinglys in the 1600's are available. Those given are sufficient to indicate the first Mattingly family which migrated to Maryland in 1663/4 was either directly or indirectly from Berkshire Co.

    1. New Query & Surname Indexing on Clay Co IL GenWeb site
    2. Ted Cash
    3. Greetings fellow researchers, My apologies for many of you receiving this twice. I'm sending both to ILCLAY-L and to all Clay Co Researchers. I've made some changes to the Clay Co IL GenWeb site, and hope you'll drop by, take a look, and let me know what I can do to improve it. The biggest is the way YOUR queries and surname registrations are entered, and viewed. Let me describe briefly why the changes. I've adopted another county (Bond Co IL -- a nearby neighbor to Clay to the west) where I have some roots as well. I've not made any changes there (probably will), but did find that they use a semi-automated way of posting queries and surname registrations. (The method has been available for a few months, but I hadn't taken time to implement it for Clay Co.) The more I dug into it, the more I liked it because: 1) It does a better and more consistant job than I can do manually. During the conversion from the "old" to the "new" I was shooked by the number of careless mistakes that I had made that may have prevented proper access to some of the information you had posted. 2) Because a number of sites across the country are using this method, it allows for people (like yourselves) to access more information in your research. You and others can rapidly search for common surnames within your county, state, or country (maybe globally). In a day or two I will be adding this to our site. It's an overnight process, and I didn't want to wait before making it available to you. 3) It will take less of my time, once I become more familiar with the process. The new system stores all your queries and surnames in a database, then builds 3 types of indexes: Queries, Surnames, Researchers. The Queries is pretty much like the old query listing that we had, except it has links to the Surnames and Researchers. The Surname index lists all the Researchers who have entered them, like previously. The Researchers index is new -- It lists all Researchers, all the Queries and Surnames they are interested in, e-mail and personal webpages. Access to the new system is through the item called "Queries & Surnames". The "old" system will be left inplace for a few days, but no new entries will be added to it. To add new entries, click on the "Queries & Surnames" link; then click on "Enter your Query or Surnames"; fill in the form (READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, please), verify the information; press the "Send This to Clay County" button. In a few seconds (longer if the system is busy) your query / surnames will be available for you and others to view under the "Submissions not yet indexed" link. Periodically I will check for entries, and add your entry to the "indexed" portion of the system. If you've made it this far -- I'm amazed. I've rambled on too long. Constructive comments are always welcome. If you don't like it, please tell me privately. Thank You, Ted Researching BREMER, CASH, CORNELIUS, DRANGMEISTER, GROENEWOLD, HARTWIG, HELM, JAMES, JENNINGS, JOHNSON, MANNING, MAXEY, MORTENSEN, PIEPHO, SEEGERS See these and more at: http://www.mindspring.com/~casht Bond Co, IL Coordinator for USGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilbond Clay Co, IL Coordinator for USGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilclay Clay Co, IL Genealogy Mailing list - mailto:ILCLAY-L@rootsweb.com
