Don't know who it was named after. When it was formed -- again on the "Welcome Page" of the website - 1824. Not aware of any online census for Clay Co, except for a list of Kentuckians there in 1850 -- under "Queries and Surnames". 1. [ILCLAY-L] Stallings/Levitt/Philips in IL
    2. Wanda Pitt
    3. Hi, I stopped by a library today and looked at census indexes of Illinois looking for Levit, Stallings and Philips. This is what I found. (I didn't list all the Philips because I couldn't find John P. Philips) 1820 IL census Margaret Stallians - Madison Co John Stallion - Madison Co Samuel Stallion - Madison Co William Stallion - Madison Co There was no Clay Co, IL in 1820. Madison was a large county in 1820. 1830 IL census Benjamin Stallings - Clay Co, pg 98, line 21 Lockheart Stallings - Clay Co, pg 98, line 11 Wellis Stallings - Clay Co, pg 99, line 10 Permelia Philips - Clay Co, pg 98, line 25 Noah Levitt - Clay Co, pg 98, line 24 Thomas Levitt, sen. - Clay Co, pg 98, line 18 Thomas Levitt, jun - Clay Co, pg 97, line 19 James Levitt - Clay Co, pg 97, line 27 David Levett - Clay Co, pg 99, line 27 1840 IL census David Levett - Clay Co, pg 117 James Levett - Clay Co, pg 117 Noah Levett - Clay Co, pg 117 Thomas Levett - Clay Co, pg 117 William Levett - Clay Co, pg 118 William Stallings - Clay Co, pg 113 Lockhart Stallings - Fayette Co, pg 174 Thos Levett - Effingham Co, pg 132 I also looked in a book of Indiana Wills and found the following. John Philip (no s on Phillips) - Green Co, 1846, book A, pg 34 Ignatius Lovett - Posey Co, 1844, book B, pg 128 Wallace Leavitt - Dearborn Co, 1830, book A, pg 36 In another publication by theState of Kentuky I found AARON STALLINGS ( the son of Wright Stallings) who remained in KY after everyone else moved to Posey Co, IN. Page 281 of KENTUCKY SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812 Aaron Stallings was listed in Captain James Robison's Company of the KY Detached Militia commanded by LtCol William Mitchusson. (spellings are as they are listed in the book) For you Stallings folks who are wondering how all this relates, Permelia "Melia" Stallings (dtr of Wright Stallings) married John P. Philips in Logan Co, KY in 1810. Permelia's dtr, Mary "Polly" Phillips, married Noah Levit. Permelia's dtr, Jemina Phillips, married Lockhart Stallings. Permelia, etal, moved from Posey Co, IN to Clay Co, IL after July 1828 (when Mary married Noah and Jemina married Lockhart in Posey Co, IN in a double ceremony). (Noah Levit entered land in Clay Co, IL Feb 8 1839). (Permelia tried to divorce John P. Philips in 1822, but we're not sure if the divorce was granted or she just left him.) There is a marriage between Permelia "Stalings" and Thomas "Levet" 8-3-1833 "Clay County Marriages: 1825-1877; 'Old Number 1 Book'"; page 1-6, Record No. 1-29. It is a possibility that Permelia Stallings Philips assumed her maiden name and gave it when she married Thomas Levet in 1833. Otherwise there is another Permelia Stallings in IL we have been unable to trace! History of Wayne & Clay County Illinois 1884, Chicago Globe Publishing Company, Historical Publishers, 183 Lake Street: pg. 470. "the first white settler in Pixley Township was James Levitt who came here from Posey County, Indiana about 1826 and settled on section 21 on the old Louisville and Vincennes Road, near where Buckville, afterward called Pleasant Hill, now stands. A brother, Noah Levitt, came here shortly afterward. He was a restless man and moved from place to place. He finally died in this township." pg. 470-473. "Noah Levitt entered land in 1839. Section 22 in Pixley Township. Jacob Toliver entered section 10 in 1841." (note: Wright Philips, son of John P. Philips and Permelia Stallings, married Rosey Jane Toliver) land Record NAME YEAR TRS DESC 107594 LEVITT NOAH 1841 3 4N 8E21 SWSW 107600 LEVITT NOAH 1839 3 4N 8E22 NESW If anyone has other clues about these families, I would be very grateful. 2. My paternal grgrgrandfather, Alexander M. E. MARTIN, moved to IL in the early 1850s from IN and remained in Clay County the rest of his life. He was a prosperous farmer in Songer and then Xenia, marrying 3 times to MaryJane ATKINSON, Lucinda Chasteen and Elizabeth Thomas. According to Mr. Tanner's Cemetery Inscriptions of Clay County, he is buried in the IOOF Cemetery; tombstone dated 1912. Another paternal grgrgrandfather, George THING, also moved from IN to IL around the same time with his wife, America RUSHER. He also is buried in the IOOF Cemetary; tombstone dated 1889. Their son, Lorentus, married Alexander Martin's daughter, Rose, by his first wife, MaryJane. I have had correspondence with Fred Gain in Springfield, who is a cousin several times removed. If anyone else has parts of their families that meld with mine, I would be delighted to hear from you. Pamela Bane Baneshe42@aol.com Jacksonville, Florida

    3. Amanda PORTER was mentioned in one of the recent postings as being a child in the household of Andrew PORTER. Amanda married my relation Joseph A.OLIVER at Clay Co on Jan 21, 1872. Then on Feb 26, 1879 Amanda E. OLIVER married Isaac W. FLESHMAN of Oskaloosa. The birthplace of both Amanda and Isaac is given as Bartholomew Co, IN. The marriage record further states that Amanda's parents were Andrew PORTER and Mary COX. If anyone knows what happenned to Joseph OLIVER or if he and Amanda had any children, please let me know. Joseph was a son of Wesley and Mahala WILSON OLIVER of nearby Omega, Marion Co, IL. I guess that if they had children they would be living in the FLESHMAN household in Oskaloosa but I dont have the 1880 census for that township. Ray Oliver in St. Louis

    1. [ILCLAY-L] RHOADES, ROADS, RHOADS, RHODES
    2. I still need a little help in identifying my GrGrandfather. I have zeroed in on the Knox County, KY, RHODES who are on the 1850 and 1860 census near Barbourville. Here's what I know: I am a descendant of Alexander RHOADES (sometimes spelled RHODES, ROADS, RHOADS) and Margaret BRIMBERRY. Alexander shows on his cemetery stone as born 12 Oct 1843. Census show born in KY. Alexander first shows up in Clay Co. IL when he married Margaret in 1868. Land records, 1881 (next to Margaret's Father, Leonard Brimberry) show to a "L. A. RHOADS". Can anyone identify the "L" for me? Family tradition holds that he took his four children and went to Arkansas upon the death of Margaret in the mid 1880s. Also that his parents were William RHODES and Anna HORN. In the 1850 and 1860 Knox Co. KY Census there are some HORN and RHODES families that are living next to each other with an Alexander RHODES with them but showing him born in 1838 (very possible I'm sure). Alexander named his children" William Isaac, Mary Elizabeth, James Henry, and Zilphia Catherine. Another researcher, on the internet, sent me an email about 10 months ago saying that these were not my Rhodes, but he won't respond to my return emails. Does anyone know where the above mentioned Alexander (the one on the Knox Co. Census) went to? I would like to find him on the 1870 or 1880 census so I can eliminate him from further consideration as my anscestor. I suspect that the Civil War had something to do with my Alexander being in IL because of the time, 1868. Maybe not. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Ken Elery, Dallas, TX
