    1. [ILCLAY-L] COLCLASURE/SUTHERLAND/ORRELL
    2. Brian & Tricia Carothers
    3. Would any of you COLCLASURE researchers know what happened to the children of John L. COLCLASURE (son of Jacob and Mary "Polly" Trinkle Colclasure) and wife Mary SUTHERLAND? I have down that John L. died 1866 and Mary died bef. 1866. Their childrens ages at the time of John L.s death would be, Cynthia 18, Isabelle 11 and David 4. Where did these children end up? I just got word that an ISABELLA COLCLASURE who was born in Clay Co., IL married a man named JOHN F. ORRELL in Missouri. I am wondering if this ISABELLA and this ISABELLE are one in the same. Thanks so much for your help, I do appreciate it! Tricia Colcleasure Carothers

    3. Tricia, I looked through my stuff and I came across an article in Xenia Then and Now which addresses part of your search for Giles Songer. Here's the text: "...Samuel Songer (1801-1874) and his wife Elizabeth Whitman (who died in 1881). Both were buried in the Songer Cemetery and Songer township was named for Samuel. The previously printed volume of Clay County History deals well with this family and we shall conclude now with some quotations from the unpublished family record. 'We lived on the Sam Payne place from 1828 until 1829. (Note* this was about 2 miles West of Xenia on the old trail) We moved to our new home in March of 1829. (Note* This is N.W. corner of Sec. 33, Songer Twp. present site of Nelson Moore Residence) We carried coals between two boards so we could start a fire... this home was made of split logs, 18 feet square with not a nail in it...it had one door and no windows. (Note* this was Samuel Songer's children giving this account. It is not know where the other children went. Abram did live south of Cato. The mother, Catherine, died in 1845 and is buried in Campground Cemetery)...Giles and his sisters went on to Trenton, Missouri. Many of their people are still living in Missouri...Abram was a Soldier in the Black Hawk Indian war..." Hope this helps a little. Like you I am baffled by Noah Colclasure. I found no reference to him anywhere in all my Colclasure stuff. Let me know if you find the connection. Nancy Hashimoto nhashimo@wppost.depaul.edu

    2. Hi List, In Indiana when a person applied for a marriage license, they had to give their mother's maiden name (I know as far back as at least 1880). Did they have to do they same in IL? If so, does someone have access to a listing for Lawrence Co., IL. And if they do, would they please do a look up for me? I have a Richard UMSTED & Emily C. Potts 1 Aug 1870. I would like to have Richard's mother's maiden name. If that doesn't work we could try Phillip UMSTEAD to Margaret? maybe 1869 to 1875, in either Lawrence, Jasper, or Clay Co., IL, and still needing Phillip's mother's maiden name. Thank you so much, Donna

    3. This is for all you SONGER researchers out there. In a nutshell, I see that a GILES SONGER was found in the 1840 census. He was between the ages of 30-40. Then in the 1850 Census I see a JILES M. SONGER, age 26. First off, does anyone know if this JILES M. is the son of GILES SONGER? My next question is that in the 1850 Grundy Co., MO Census, I see a GILES SONGER, age 31, wife's name is Nancy age 30. Would any of you SONGER researchers happen to know if this GILES in MO., relates to any of the one's from Clay Co., IL?? The reason I ask this is that living right next door to this SONGER family in the Grundy Co., MO Census is a NOAH COLCLASURE family. I have had a heck of a time trying to figure out who this Noah belongs to. Now I am wondering if perhaps GILES SONGER and NOAH COLCLASURE might have come out to MO. together from Clay Co., IL. Any ideas, thoughts, or hard facts much appreciated. I can use all the help I can get. If you think I should add more info (like childrens names) let me know and I'll post them to the list. Thanks so much and I'll keep my fingers crossed.... Tricia Colcleasure Carothers bcaroth@jps.net

    3. I have been researching my family, and thought maybe since I can't come up with any leads, that I would put them out for you and see if anyone has any idea or knows anyone who is related. My great-great grandfather was Joesph SALESMAN who died in 1899 in Illinois. I know that he was born in Ky. His brother Jacob Allen SALESMAN was born in Green Co. Kentucky in or around 1840. He married a girl named Mary Ann RICTOR who was born in Bullet Co. Ky. arun 1844. They had several children. Some born in Ky and some in Ill. They had a Sarah C. who married a Joseph HANDLEY. ADughter name Elizabeth Etta SALESMAN. A Mary E. SALESMAN who married a WELLS and lived at Cisne Illinois in 1942. They had a daughter Norah Myrtle WELLS b. Dec 4, 1898 in Zif Twp. Clay Co. ILL. Joesph SALESMAN was married two times. Believed to have brought a Martha CAMP from Ky and married her in Ill on 9-17-1871 and they had one child Phillip SALESMAN. In the Census later it shows that Phillip is with his father at age 7 and he is remarried to a Mry O. JENNNER daughter of George and Mary JENNER. She was born in Kentucky also. They married on 12-11-1877 and her name at that time was Mary McGATH. She was married to a George ENSOR, John McGATH and then to my great-great grandfather Joesph SALESMAN. She had five daughters Katie McGATH who married George GARRETT, Parmelia McGATH who married a WM P. BEAN, Miranda ENSOR, Cora ENSOR who married a A.J. Dant, Mary A. ENSOR. Three sons, my Ggrandfather Wm James SALESMAN, his brother Albert SALESMAN, and a brother Donald who died at infancy in 1882. Jacob and Mary SALESMAN had a son name Edgar Earl SALESMAN, Elsah E. SALESMAN, Aaron SALESMAN. Jacob and Joesph also had a brother named Phillip SALESMAN who was born in Ky alos. He was 23 in 1880 census in Illinois. Any information on who or where in Kentucky they may have come from or any info at all would be greatly appreciated. This family didn't leave behind much info. Very secretive?
