At the time he lived in Biblegrove and he died in Effingham. I'm looking for anything from him while he was in the war and anything from the 48th regiment. If anyone has any item from the 48th please contact me even if its not for sale.I have a very strong interest in the 48th and the men that made up the regiment. 1. [ILCLAY-L] Sarah Belle White
2. Ray Oliver
3. A long time resident of Sailor Springs passed away Saturday, June 12, 1999 at a nursing home in Wayne County. IL. Sarah Belle WHITE was my grand aunt and was born 8 Jan 1903 in Hoosier Township. She was the youngest and last of her family. Her father, Solomon, was a farmer and township supervisor in the 1920's. Her mother was a COGGAN, Sarah Blanche, who was the youngest of a family who had emigrated from Canada and the only one born in USA (Clay, IL). Her grandfather Denby Coggan was a master carpenter who, with his son Manliffe, built many school houses in Clay Co as well as the "hotels' at the Springs. Sarah Belle's paternal grandfather was William White, a Civil War veteran when he was in his forties. William came to Hoosier Twp, IL before 1860 from Jefferson County, TN. Sarah Belle and her siblings did not know their grandfather, as he died in 1875 at Hoosier (before "The Springs"). She might have known her grandmother, however, who was Dianah BARLOW when she died at Sailor Springs in 1912 (widow of George W). Dianah was a LUTES from Estill Co, KY and her father, Henry, was an early settler in Clay County. Henry had only the daughter and therefore the name LUTES is extinct in the vicinity, although it thrives in KY and elsewhere. Henry , his wife and many Whites are buried in the "White" family plot on the old farm. I hope Sarah Belle will be buried there also. Ray Oliver in St. Louis

William Green, Elias D Jackson, Andrew Creamer, James Redburn Vickery Misenhimer Boswell I also have a Website that has several lines shown. Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: User Home Pages: The Family Branches of Gardner and Pearson I hope that if there are any matches you will contact me. 1. Re: [ILCLAY-L] Dead Politicians
2. Mr. Oliver, You are right. We are way too quiet. Ted Cash is away for a time. Let's get some things out of interest to everyone. Don't keep your latest discovery secret. Let us all know. I have been corresponding with the volunteers of the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild <http://istg.rootsweb.com>. They have transcribed over 800 ships passenger lists and my JANSSEN family from Germany was on one of them. This is a marvelous and valuable project. Did y'all hear about the new project to reconstruct information for the 1890 census? Many of us know where our ancestors were then and if we all submitted that information to the volunteers of the project, soon there would be a source for everyone to use. As soon as I can scare up the Internet address, I will pass it along. Pamela Bane Baneshe42@aol.com Searching for: My grgrgrandfather, Alexander M. E. MARTIN, was, according to the history of Clay County, into just about everything. A Elder of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, he also held various township (Xenia) offices, was Supervisor of the township for 4 years. He married 3 times and died in 1912 in his late 70s, leaving 8 children. Most of this I have not yet proved, so I have some work cut out for me. The family is connected to George THING, a saddler/harness maker, who moved to Clay County from Indiana in the 1850s, with his wife, America RUSHER and their first 2 children, Mary and Lorentus. Mary became the wife of J. R. CHANDLER, a merchant in Wayne City and Lorentus married Rose MARTIN in 1879. Do these names ring any bells?

3. This list sure is stagnant. The GenWeb site is excellent technically ( thanks to Ted) but here again we as list members are neglecting our opportunity to input electronically or comment on interesting items. For example, I found in the most recent issue of Clay Roots the following: * My great grandfather Solomon (Sol) WHITE was elected to township supervisor of Hooshier in 1924. I did not know that. (He was a farmer as far as I knew). ** An obit for Col. Randolph SMITH.....now here was a true local politician who actually ran for Congress. Pretty good for a country boy in a small county like Clay. Related to me only by marriage well back. The 1924 obit does not mention that he had a half brother who was a State Representative decades before (Byron ROTAN). Byron was a lawyer who died young. (info on both is in the Clay History book). Their common thread was their mother Cynthia JONES. Now, I reminisce to a short conversation that I had with my Dad .... S. Raymond OLIVER who was born and raised in Louisville (that's Lewisville..... not as in Kentucky). I was about 10 and the year was about 1949-50. We had our home in E. Chicago, IN, later Decatur, IL. I stood outside the bathroom door one evening as he stropped his razor. I asked if Louisville had a Mayor. (Typical inane kid question but I think there was something in the news about crooked politicians which led me to the inquiry.) He said "Yes, but he is a guy just like you and me". This spoke to me about Clay County, democracy and populism. A corollary was the expression (unique to Southern Illinois?....and sexist?) that politicians put "their pants on one leg at a time, just as you and me". My father was fond of saying that also. In Hope for the Future and Fond of the Past, Ray OLIVER, ..... 120 miles west of Clay County , in Missouri.......... and 150 years.
