Well here is a list of COLCLASURE's that got married in Illinois, prior to 1900 -- most of them in Clay Co. I'm sending to the entire list, because I know several people are tracking this name. Source of this information is a CD from the Illinois State Genealogy Society. The format below is 1) last name, first name; 2) last name, first name of marriage partner; 3) Volume; 4) Page; 5) County; 6) Date of Marriage. On a couple of lines there is another number between Page and county -- this is a license #. 3. I am trying to find the place of death of Casper Michael b. 1809 VA moved to Flora, IL 1856. He was in census 1860 thru 1880. I didn't find him in census of 1900. He and his wife Hester are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora and dates on tombstone say Hester died 10-6-1900 and Casper died Jan 1901. I have the Clay County Il Death Records book and Casper and Hester are not in it so I assume they did not die in Clay Co. Thanks Pat Venable

    3. Hi all--- I am very new to genealogy, love it, but don't get the chance to work on it at a long period of time without being sidetracked. I live in southern Il. and have been trying to get to Louisville, to look up records but time escapes me. I would like to find info on my g-g-grandfather, JAMES C. STANLEY. He married NANCY COOK STANLEY, July 15,1863. Both died in 1877/78, one week apart. Their daughter, my great-grandmother, Rebecca Jane married AMOS DEVORE Nov.18, 1883, she died Dec. 18, 1940. I don't have much else to go on for James C. Stanley. Also there was a JESSE STANLEY, born in 1833 in In. had five daughters, all born in Clay Co. Pixley Twp., trying to see if there is a connection between James C. and Jesse. As I said, I am new to genealogy, so I really don't how to go about finding some things, but so glad this mailing list was made available. Thanks to Ted.. Thanks to anyone that has any info for me. I really appreciate the interest and help. Janet Devore Sexton

    3. Hi, I just wanted to say hi to this new discussion group. I am so happy you have decided to start it. I live in VA and have been researching my grandfather's family. My grandfather was born in rural Louisville, known as, Riffle, in Clay Co. in July 1902. His name: Othel Archibald ALLEN. His parents: "Arch"ibald Joseph ALLEN (born in IN) and Luantha "Elizabeth" SUTTON. They were farmers. I would like to get some more information if possible on these individuals. I have gotten some already but am looking for more. Thank you. -Judy Allen Neese- neesem@sprintmail.com

    2. Tom McKnelly
    3. Hi Everybody -- My name is Tom McKnelly. I currently live in Wisconsin but was born and raised in Arkansas. My Dad and his ancestors were all born in the Louisville, Blair Township area. My great-great-great grandfather, John McKnelly, first settled in Clay County about 1838, moving there from Indiana, and prior to that, Lee County, VA. I have lots of relatives in Clay County: McKnellys, Manns, Grahns, Blairs, Culbertsons, Rinnerts, Conleys, and more: most of whom I have yet to meet. I am fairly new to genealogy research (about 2-3 years) and am only really actively researching the following names: McKnelly, Mann, Miller, McCoy; some of the other names in my direct ancestry are: Bean, Blair, Bright, Brooks, Byrd, Conley, Cornwell, Culbertson, Guthrie, Holker, Houck, King, McClay, Mock, Pridemore, Pope, Russell, Wilson, Wiman (Wyman), and Wolfe. I have belonged to the Clay County Historical Society for two years. I have spent a short time, one day, at the society, doing some research. It is a wonderful place, staffed by exceptionally kind and courteous people. I didn't have enough time to even begin to scratch the surface of their holdings so I am planning on returning this spring and doing some REAL research there. I would like to congratulate Ted for having prepared a really interesting site for Clay County. I don't have even the foggiest idea how much of his (donated) time this must take; but I'd like to thank you, Ted, for all the effort and creativity you have put into it! Since I know nothing about maintaining a site such as this, I sort of hesitate to make a suggestion. I certainly don't want to sound as if I know what I'm doing...*s* But, if it can be done without too much trouble, I would suggest creating an archive of past messages. I used to belong to a discussion group like this for the family name Mock. That was a long-established list and they seemed to have worked out many of the kinks in such a start-up program. They had a search engine with the archives whereby a person could look up past messages based upon: a) the calendar; b) ancestral names; c) query submitters. Hope to maintain an interesting search among all you Clay County researchers. Havea good week-end everyone! -- Tom

    1. More Ice Breaking News .....
    2. Linda K. Redwood
    3. Dear Fellow C3's ..... Hi !!!! I thought maybe I should tell you a little about myself and my research background. I have been doing genealogy since 1972. I was 14 years old. I had a school project to do, with the subject matter being my choice, and I had no idea WHAT to do. My paternal Grandmother was visiting and she prompted the illustrious question, "My mother's maiden name was TODD, do you think perhaps we could be related to Abraham LINCOLN, who's wife was Mary TODD LINCOLN ??" So, off to the library I went with more questions than answers. After one afternoon of research and a short family tree from Grandma, I found out that we are NOT related. But, I contracted the highly contagious "Genealogy Bug" that afternoon, and have had a bad case of it ever since. I now have more answers than questions, but, there will always be the questions, eh ??? I have belonged to the Clay County Historical Society since 1989. My mother's maiden name is BLAIR. I also have been a member of the BLAIR Society for Genealogical Research since 1989. My family roots spread out from the original pioneer brothers of the Blair Township fame. My connection is the brother, James BLAIR. About five years ago, Martha Cieglo and I were members of Prodigy and we did look ups for lots of people. We figured out that between us, we must own just about every publication that the CCGS must of printed !!! Hah. >;-) I also have had some experience managing genealogy forums on several BBSes in my local area.. I really enjoy helping people find their roots !!! :) I was born in Greenfield, Hancock, IN in 1957. We moved to Dayton, OH in 1967. Then, we moved to Berkley, (a suburb of Detroit) MI in 1971. I married 1) Ken Carlson in 1977 ... divorced the bum in 1982. Then, 2) Randy J. Redwood 2-14-1987 we will celebrate 11 years of wedded bliss, next week. No children ..... just a household full of four legged critters. I work at Kmart Corporation (HQ) in Troy, MI in the Voice Communications department. My maternal grandparents are from Clay County, IL. Granny's family is from the German community in Bible Grove, Clay County, IL. And, Grandpa's family (BLAIR) were the founding father's of Clay County, IL. I have several cousins that still live in the area. I have visited on several occasions. Always love to go back and do research. The county clerk, Robert Van Dyke, was very helpful with court records, divorces, naturalizations, et al. I found everyone at the Clay County Genealogical Society most helpful and very friendly.Hope to get to go back again, someday soon ! :) If anyone wants to talk via E mail with someone at the Society I have Jean Bailey's E Mail address. I think, she is their treasurer. BTW, I can only receive TEXT at this E Mail address, though. I do have another one where I can receive TEXT & FILES. That one is : REDWOOD@bbs.elbbs.com Thought you might enjoy seeing WHICH of the Clay County, IL surnames I am researching (not necessarily religiously !) ..... they are as follows : Clay County, IL Family Names I'm Researching : BAER,BEAN,BLAIR,BLEICH,BOLLOW,BRAUER,COX/COCKE, DEAVER/DEEVER,ATCHISON/ETCHASON/ETCHISON/ EYTCHISON,EVANS,FRIEMUTH,GRAHN,HERMANN,HUGHES/HUGHS,HUTCHINS,INGELDOVE,KING,MC/AULEY/ MC/CAULEY/MC/CAWLEY,MC/GOWAN,MILLER,NUETZMAN/NUETZMANN/NUTZMANN/VON NUTZ,RIEPELMEIER, SCOTT,SHIRLEY,SPURLIN & WILLIS. 3. Greetings : to all C3 (Clay County Connected) people, and..... to Ted Cash in particular, with much praise for his work on the Clay Co Website. I also like your personal website, Ted, especially that old piture of your family. I hope that you can open up some sort of picture gallery on the Clay site. The old map will be a terrific edition when you get it in. I have copied that map from the St. Louis City Library (not far from where I live here in Missouri). My Dad and his Dad were born in Louisville and their ancestors lived around Sailor Springs or Omega, which is Marion Co just west of Louisville, going back to 1840. I was born 1940 in Indiana and we later moved to Decatur, Il. I still have relatives in Clay and Marion Counties and have visited often. I have visited the Clay Co. Geneological Society but am not yet a member. My cousins John and Beverly Oliver are members and they have had our line pretty well covered with queries and surnames, both at the Society and on the website. For the record , the surnames we are tracing are OLIVER, WHITE, COGGAN, LUTES, SPRY, AND CREECH (Ted, I did manage to put in Creech recently, but I misspelled it! Can you correct?) Any one have any inkling what ever happened to the revitalization/rehab effort over at the Sailor Springs area. One of my distant relations, a Coggan, was written up on this in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch way back in 1983. I have the article complete with pictures. I heard the effort went belly up. I think the website and this mailing list will be a great way for C3 people to stay connected to the County. Ray Oliver Ballwin, MO

    2. Ok, I'll post my query and hope someone can come up with some information. My husband's great grandparents Boyd TERRELL and Leah Frances JONES were married 8 April 1866 in Clay City. According to a information in a family Bible belonging to one of their grand daughters, Leah was the daughter of Noah JONES and Rebecca TRIMMER; her parents had died when she was a small child and Leah was raised by Rev. and Mrs. William SCHOOLEY. What happened to the other children of Noah and Rebecca Jones? In the 1850 census for Clay County I found these children: Elizabeth, Mark, Edmund, Jasper J., Mary, Leah, and Morris. Boyd and Leah moved on to Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co. then to Texas by 1877. In 1902 they bought land in Sterling, Comanche County, OK where both are buried. 1. Someone has to break the ice

    3. Everyone's waiting for someone else to start asking questions about Clay Co, or making some great statements. I'm not going to do either. This list is new -- less than a week old -- there are currently between 20 and 25 of "US" signed up on the list -- some on regular and some on digest mode. Welcome to each of you. I've never managed a list before, so bear with me as we learn together. This list is whatever we want to make of it, within reason. In Clay Co, I'm researching CASH, JENNINGS, BLACKBURN, MANNING, BENTLEY, GOODMAN, HAYNES, MAXEY, JAMES, CREEK, and others. My father was born in Flora in 1909 and his father in 1875, but because of a divorce my father never knew his father. I've been researching the family tree for about 18 months now and have been fortunate in locating relatives in Clay Co. If any of you have links to the names above, I'd certainly like to learn more. I live in North Carolina, but visited Clay Co last year for the first time and am planning to go back again this spring. Would be interested in hearing from each of you, as to what you're looking for; suggestions for the Clay Co website; etc. How many of you belong to the Clay Co Genealogical Society? Are any of you located in or near Clay Co? 2. Hi, I'm Chad Stanford and descended from the Stanford family headed by the widow Bathsheba who moved into what is now Stanford Twp. in 1840. Seems I'm related to most of the early people of Clay Co. My father, Ralph W. Stanford, was born in Flora in 1886, the son of Ross and Linnie (Luse) Stanford. Would love to correspond with anyone who is related and who think he/she might be. I am a member of the Clay Co. Gen. Soc. and have visited the area several times in recent years. I live in Spokane, WA, previously Los Angeles. Chad Stanford MatildaToo@aol.com
