I just returned from Christian County and a visit to the Old Walnut Hill or Hanon Cemetery. It is the resting place of some of the old settlers in the South Fork area. Hanons are there as well as the original Minnis settlers. The Hanons were also the first permanent settlers in Christian County. I knew that it had not been taken care of and was prepared to see it overgrown. But, it is almost impossible to walk through. To make matters worse, it has been used as a dumping ground and I was able to see an old washtub and the seat from a tractor among the broken stones. Many of the stones have been set upright and are leaning against trees. I am aware that the money does not exist in most county budgets to cover repair and/or upkeep of these old sites but they are a treasure and need to be preserved. I visited the Blueville Cemetery which has been restored and applaud the work done there. Many of my family members are at the New Walnut Hill Cemetery which is well cared for as well as at the cemetery in Millersville. Is there anyone from this list or does anyone know of anyone who would like to undertake the project of cleaning out Old Walnut Hill? If you have any ideas, please contact me. My surnames include the following in Christian County: Hanon, Sharp, Large, Secrist, Waller, Rutledge, Miller, Matthews, Wood, Deeren, Mason. Jane
