    2. In a message dated 8/5/03 6:12:55 PM Pacific Daylight Time, SJHATHAWAY@aol.com writes: > What is the Griffiths Valuation? This might be helpful info for all those researching Irish relatives in Christian County... In order to produce the accurate information necessary for local taxation, the Tenement Act of 1842 provided for a uniform valuation of all property in Ireland, to be based on the productive capacity of land and the potential rent of buildings. Griffith's Valuation, is arranged by counties and within counties by Poor Law Union Divisions and within Unions by parishes. It includes the following information: townland address; householder's name; name of the person from whom the property was leased; description of the property; acreage; valuation. There are no census for Ireland (well, very few). The best that can be done when starting your Irish roots is to look in the Griffith's to pinpoint an area. Now, if you have the genealogy.com subscription for (I think) immigration records the Griffith's are included for many if not all the counties. Galway was done in 1853/1854. If William Kerwin was the father, you would look for him. You would then find not only Parish but Townland. Then you start looking in church records. Anything before the 1850s is a gamble to find anything. This is why I said researching Ireland can be tough. Stay clear of the History Centers they are not that helpful and you don't get near what you pay for. Although with many Irish coming to the US you could get lucky finding info here. My Irish family immigrated to Australia making it tough for me and unfamiliar with Irish American history. Mum's family is from Oz and Dad's family is from Pana. Steph

Hi Sally, It is Steph again. Have you gone to Genealogy.com to look at the posts or some of the family home pages? There are a few family home pages with Lawrence in them. It states Lawrence's parent's were William Kerwin and Elizabeth Kelly. You might want to check it out. I am going to see what we have on Galway tomorrow. The Griffith's Valuation would be your best bet to pinpoint a parish in County Galway. The traditional spelling of Kerwin is Kirwan, so you might want to try both spellings when looking for parent's. I will check those Oak Hill records for you tomorrow. Steph

    2. Hi Patty I live in TX and I guess its my turn to ask for help. Isn't this a great list. I've had several very good responses which have sent me in the right direction. I have a ton of obits that I want, but I guess that will have to wait for my trip up there sometime. I am collecting death records, the ones that they have anyway, and some birth rec and marr rec, hoping to find the elusive parents on my Lawrence Kerwin, and his 2 sisters, Mary Doyle and Johanna Damery. I just called today to Macon co and found that they don't have a death rec for Johanna because it was before the law of 1916 of keeping these records. So I am hoping to get her obit and Mary's obit and maybe one of them will give the parents names from Ireland......:-) I am finding that I am related to a lot of people in Christian Co IL, more than I ever knew of. I really apprecitae all the help everyone has given to me too. Thanks Bunches SALLY THANKS.....:-)* Sally Hathaway sjhathaway@aol.com

    2. Sally, How do you find the obituaries for these folks? I must admit to being very nieve about searching and I found most of my info through the hit and miss system. I do have photo copies of some birth, marriage, and death records. They are for my parents and grandparents. It is wonderful having ansester.com and you folks here to give me guidance. I live in Southern CA and all my family is in Ill. I can't just take a day trip over to the county clerks office for information. Thank you to all who have helped out. 2. Hello My Mary Kerwin married a Daniel Doyle in Morgan Co IL 6-5-1858. Mary Kerwin was the sister to my GGgrandfather, Lawrence Kerwin b Ireland and came to CC IL. His obit said he had 2 sisters, Mrs. Daniel Doyle and Mrs. Johanna Damery. I'm looking for the Daniel & Mary Kerwin Doyle who lived in CC IL and were my family. I am also trying to find out what Mary, Johanna and Lawrence's parents names were. I believe that they came from Galway, Ireland. She was born in Ireland also. Johanna Kerwin Damery came to the USA in 1851, Lawrence came in 1850, but don't know when Mary came over. Probably with Johanna. I have found several Doyle's in CC from Ireland, but don't know which is my Mary's family. Do you know of this family? Thanks Sally THANKS.....:-)* Sally Hathaway sjhathaway@aol.com

    2. Hi Sally, I did a little snooping and I found you Damery's. George and Johanna were last seen in Macon County. They are listed in ... Extracted from History of Macon County, Illinois, 1880 NAME RESI'D OCCUPATION NATIVITY SET'D DAMERY, George Sec 28 Farmer & Stock Raiser Ireland 1862 KERWIN, Joanna Pl. View Sec 28 Wife of George Damery Ireland 1862 I found them in the 1880 and 1900 census. Let me know if you would like the 1900. It seems someone has written a book on the Damery's of Macon. I sent a post to see if George and Johanna were included. Also try Barb Madsen for a lookup in the Macon Death index... barb01@csj.net She was very prompt when replying to a lookup from me once. It's your best bet since Johanna most likely died between 1900 and 1910 (could not find them in 1910). She wouldn't be listed in the online index. By the 1900 Johanna was born Jun 1819 and came to the US in 1851. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Stephanie

    2. Hi Looking for info on my Kerwin family and above families. Lawrence Kerwin came to CC from Ireland with 2 sisters and possibily a brother. Mrs. Daniel Doyle Mrs. Johanna Damery I couldn't find where they were buried to get their death dates. Mary Rose & Gertrude Painter...sisters who had both been married to George Kerwin and both died. I think the parents were Joseph or James Painter and Mary Durbin. Painter was from MO and Durbin from Taylorville. Mary Painter Kerwin b 1896 d 1918 Gertrude Painter Kerwin b 1900 d 1921 I think Mary had a son Joseph Russell who was sent to MO to live with family after the girls died. Mary Carroll was marr to James Kerwin. Her parents were Thomas Carroll I think, the print on the back of their marr lic isn't very good. Her mother was Mary Dolan. Lawrence Kerwin was marr to Mary Cahill of Taylorville. I don't know who her parents were. THANKS.....:-)* Sally Hathaway sjhathaway@aol.com
