I have traveled to Taylorville twice now and each time the court clerks have been very helpful. Apparently they have been getting a lot of visiting family historians because I was asked if I was a member of a genealogy society so that the copy costs were only 1 dollar for a marriage record. For MARY CALVO PEABODY I have found someone who has a couple of used books on the Peabody family. She has inherited tons of boxes of books from after her husband died, who was an avidi collector. She is Mary Clapp and you contact her directly at: [email protected] Ask her about her Peabody family books. She has tons of genealogy info in journals, mags, used books, newspapers, gen journals, etc. She is a very nice older lady. Thanks Sally Hathaway [email protected]
For Mary Calvo: I assume you're still seaching for Dr Peabody, although you didn't mention her name in this posting. So far I haven't run into ANY information on this event you've described. The History of Christian Co book is 10" x 13" and two inches thick in fine print with no index, so is very difficult to find something specific like this. The bibliographies are indexed, but are only of prominent folks who paid to have their "story" told. And none of the varied Peabody clan chose to have this done. Sorry, that I can't find what you're looking for at this time. Sally Neely
This is my first posting to this newsletter. I am searching for info on my grand parents, Jesse Starks and Molly Hendricks Stars they lived in Pana Il, in the late 1800's.They had 3or 4 children Elmer Richard and I think a Son Bill and 1 or 2 girls. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated Dee
HI I'm looking for the person who was looking for the surname ROSE. Please contact me privately, I believe I have some info for you..:) Thanks Sally Hathaway [email protected]
Sally, In that History of Christian County, do they happen to mention a woman Dr.? Searching for a woman Dr. who died on her horse while making a house call in the 1800's. Grasping for any info. Mary Calvo
Dear Gloria, I have a couple of Wetzels in my family database - any connection? Sarah R. MABRY (born about 1841, daughter of Jane Copeland and Joel Braxton Mabry) married Peter D. WETZEL early 1860s in Fayette County, IL. The Mabrys had many ties to Christian County. I also have Catherine WETZEl married George STEMLER about 1890 and Louise WETZEL married Christian RITTER about 1850, both in Monroe County, IL. Jane Lichtenburger: Please contact me re Sharp & Deeren family. I have Ross connection to them. D. Ross
Sarajane, Thanks for the prompt response to my query about Davis info. This family appears to be about two generations too recent for the one I'm looking for. But I'll keep the info in my file and we may yet make a connection. Sometimes the puzzle is to eliminate clues, which ultimately narrows the search until you eventually hit an answer. I appreciate your help Sally Neely << RE: WILLIAM P. DAVIS OR HANNAH FOSTER I don't know how much this will help. William P. Davis 1835-1909 appear on his tombstone in Linwood Cemetery, Pana, IL. His wife was Hannah Foster 1843-1911 and is buried beside him. Marion Co. 1870 census lists a Wm. P. Davis age 35 born in TN with Hannah age 29 born TN. Their birthplace and names of the children listed on this census is suspect. The children we know about were John, Maude, Myrtle, Nellie. We are uncertain about John, but the daughters married names were Underwood, Elliott, Gilman...if any of this rings any bells, please let me know. Thanks, Sarajane Zorn >>
Hello - This is my first post to this newsletter. I am seeking info on a James Wilson Bishop who married a Mary Mead(e) in Ohio in 1850. He is listed on the 1860 Christian Co. IL Census, P.925. Dwelling #1981 Family #1876 James W. Bishop 31 m farmer 200 VT Mary 29 f PA David 7 m OH Eunice 4 f OH George 2 m Mich John Bishop 18 m OH William Bishop 15 m OH The John and William that are listed are believed to be brothers of James W. I have traced John from this point on, but can find nothing prior to 1860. He enlisted in the Union Forces in Pana, Illinois in 1861. John Bishop is my g-grandfather. If anyone has any info on the above family or can connect in any way, I would appreciate any info that you would care to share. I also am unable to trace James W. any further until the 1880 Greene County MO census. Thanks so much. Shirley
In addition to the previous info I posted: I have a copy of the marriage certificate for this couple. It is dated 10/16/1861 Marion County. This document confirms to some extent the census entry regarding their residence. There are four children I have never heard about nor do they appear at a later time. Until something else comes up, must assume their very early death. Sarajane Zorn

I'm wondering if this is the same cemetery that I visited 2 years ago. It it just outside of Sharpsburg,Il. I was hoping to get in touch with the someone who could tell me who has the books on this cemetery. My family is in the New Walnut Hill Cemetery (also called the Hanon and the Universalist Cemetery.) I have family in this cemetery. I found my gg-grand father here( he was a civil war veteran and had a headstone). I could not find my gg-grand mother. They were both suppose to be buried there. Their names were ISREAL ADAMS and NANCY ANN NATIONS ADAMS. If you could be of help I would greatly appreciate it. I'm very sorry I have been rather out of touch for a while. I have been keeping up with many things, but visitors from Philadelphia and Scotland have kept me busy for 2 weeks! I just returned from Christian County and a visit to the Old Walnut Hill or Hanon Cemetery. It is the resting place of some of the old settlers in the South Fork area. Hanons are there as well as the original Minnis settlers. The Hanons were also the first permanent settlers in Christian County. I knew that it had not been taken care of and was prepared to see it overgrown. But, it is almost impossible to walk through. To make matters worse, it has been used as a dumping ground and I was able to see an old washtub and the seat from a tractor among the broken stones. Many of the stones have been set upright and are leaning against trees. I am aware that the money does not exist in most county budgets to cover repair and/or upkeep of these old sites but they are a treasure and need to be preserved. I visited the Blueville Cemetery which has been restored and applaud the work done there. Many of my family members are at the New Walnut Hill Cemetery which is well cared for as well as at the cemetery in Millersville. Is there anyone from this list or does anyone know of anyone who would like to undertake the project of cleaning out Old Walnut Hill? If you have any ideas, please contact me. My surnames include the following in Christian County: Hanon, Sharp, Large, Secrist, Waller, Rutledge, Miller, Matthews, Wood, Deeren, Mason. Jane
For Linda Reynolds: Have you seen the 1880 History of Christian Co IL? It contains short articles, among other things, about prominent citizens at that period. On p 242 is the one on Dial DAVIS, b in Sangamon Co IL 10 January, 1826. His father, John DAVIS, a native of TN, married Sarah D MILLIGAN near Nashville. I don't know if this MILLIGAN may be connected to your lines or not, but thought I'd pass the tidbit on. Sally Andrews Neely
