    3. Jim, I have Mary Margaret Hoy. She was born 18 Jun 1865, died 23 May 1939, parents: John Bigelow Hoy and Catherine Stumpff. Catherine is a sister to my ancestors, Sarah Margaret Stumpff who married William Mount. Mary married Edward A. Troutman on 25 May 1882. If you are interested I will try and find the address of my 3 cousin who gave me this information. She is a descendent of John and Catherine. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Nicol <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:27 AM Subject: [ILCHRIST-L] Nicol - Hoy Hi all, I'm new to the list. 1. [ILCHRIST-L] Wilkenson/Torrence
    2. There is a connection between my great grandfather, George Washington TORRENCE and Reuben WILKINSON and it may be of some help to Martha. Here is what I know. When Sarah DONNER and her husband, John TORRENCE, died in 1849 they left 5 small children orphans. George was one of those children and he was raised in part by Josiah WADDELL and his wife Elizabeth HALL in Cotton Hill Township of Sangamon county. When George died, in Christian County in 1913 his obituary said he came to Taylorville when he was 17 years of age and entered the employ of Reuben Wilkinson. Being the curious one that I am, I looked for information on Reuben and found the following: 1880 and 1918 History of Christian County Page 636: "A neighbor and friend of Josiah Waddle by the name of Wilkinson, and his wife, died very close together. They left their only child, Rheuben Wilkinson - a boy in his teens. He was without any known relatives. Uncle Josiah took him in and gave in work. About the time he was of age, Rheuben Wilkinson came to Christian County from Great Uncle Josiah's place near Rochester. He lived with and worked for my grandfather John Waddle for several years. Rheuben saved his money and began to buy land in Smith (May) Township. When older he moved to Taylorville and helped build the town. There is an addition called Wilkinson's Addition to Taylorville. He owned a flour mill and dealt in real estate. He always said he had a great affection for the Waddle people who raised him from teenage to manhood. He lived ninety years or more. My father used to meet him in his old age, and he said tears would well up in the old man's eyes as he recounted his younger days and the happy times." Josiah and Elizabeth WADDELL had no children of their own, so it appears that through the years they raised other peoples children and did a good job of it, too. I have not been able to find George TORRENCE in the 1860 and so I checked the listing for Reuben - did not find George - but found this: 9 June 1860 P. O. Taylorville, Dwelling #230 - Family #191: Wilderson, Rueben 38 Male, Farmer, 22,860 Born Ky. Esther 35 Female, Domestic, Born Staffordshire, England Wilkerson, Emma 7 Female, born Ill. George 5, Male, Born Ill. Edwards, Jane 40 Female, Born Staffordshire, England Carothers, John 23, Male, Laborer, Born Canada Squire, John 18 Male Laborer, Born Ohio Hope this will help Martha Stewart. Since I can't find George TORRENCE in the 1860 census I have checked for Civil War Records but so far have come up empty handed! Jo Ann Schmidt in hot and humid Houston.

    1. [ILCHRIST-L] Christian County Courthouse
    2. Mary
    3. I had a wonderful experience at the Christian County Courthouse recently. The ladies in the Probate and Court section were wonderful. They showed us where the records were and let us go through them. They were very kind about xeroxing the information from the records (and being from the Chicagoland area and knowing I wouldn't be back there soon, they were numerous. ) Some of the information is hard to get to but from what I understand they are trying to expand so they have more room. I plan to return there when I get the opportunity, I couldn't find everything I wanted to in one day. Mary

    2. I was pleasantly surprised to find a small, but well organized genealogy archive/library located in the Historical Society's museum building. Taylorville isn't a large city, but the Historical Society has done a marvelous job at its site with several buildings and the museum. It is appropriate that the GS has located their library there also. The city library has a small room with some historical publications that were helpful also. I did not get to the courthouse. 2. D Christian County Genealogical Society does have a lot of books and some Microfilms in their library. It has really grown in the past year. They have many books on Christian County that can only be found there. They have a microfilm copy of the Breeze Courier. It is staffed by a paid person. I am not sure of the hours. You contact to Society President Jeanine Biondolino ( [email protected]) if you need to know the hours or what they have in the library. A list of what they have for sale can be found on their web page at http://homepage.macomb.com/~tkuntz/christianco.htm > Let me know if I can be of any help Teri Wareham Kuntz > The genealogy society in Christian County is very small and doesn't have > much information in it. 1. Re: [ILCHRIST-L] Christian County Courthouse Hours
    2. Good Luck in Christian County! My cousin who lives near there in Montgomery County has terrible luck there and I did many years ago when I went there. They had tons of old material tossed into a dusty, dirty just spoiling. Won't let any one in to search anymore. Are very unfriendly and uncooperative when you are seeking information. I understand Fayette is very helpful and I know they have a nice library. Shelby County Genealogy is nice I understand. Sure wish someone would light a fire under Christian County government offices. It is a shame to see records being lost and unable to be seen with so many people doing genealogy work today. The genealogy society in Christian County is very small and doesn't have much information in it. The people are nice. They are volunteers. Hope you aren't going from too far away. Maybe someone will send you the hours before you go. You might find more in Springfield. I grew up in Montgomery County and have been back to search there. The records in the courthouse there are in good shape. I hope to go to Shelby County myself the next time I go back to "home ground" since I have found some things to research there. Let me know how it is to search there. Sincerely, [email protected]
