I found some names listed in an old notebook by my grandfather, as follows: (all surnames) HOBBY * MOREHOUSE * DAVIS * WEVER * McKEE * W.WILLIAMS * MOREHOUSE (2nd time) * DUITSMAN * SLUTER * GOSCHEN * H. PUTMON * G.PUTMON * NELSON * D.WILLIAMS * GILPONSON * SHIRLEY * ROSENBECK My grandfather Reid WEVER and his brother Ernie WEVER took their families from Lawrence Co., IN to the Champaign/Vermilion Co. area of IL in 1916 to "work on the FOWLER farm". They returned to IN about 1923. My mother, who was born in 1914, attended the Fairview School in Vermilion Co., IL. (her teacher was Ida May COLE and I have a photo of her and other group photos of the elementary class) My grandfather's Draft Registration Card was mailed to his address of "Ogden, Champaign Co.,IL" and the return address says Local Board for Division No. 1, County of Vermilion, Hoopeston, ILL. My uncle and wife had a son who was born in 1921 in Fithian, Vermilion Co.,IL. My mother remembers that they lived "near Royal and Ogden (both in Champaign, Co.)so apparently these folks lived practically on the county line. I assume these are the names of the "farm crew". My mother remembers the Davis' and the Duitsmans and I have many old photos (too many unidentified <frown>) I also have a news-clipping of the death of the Fithian sailor Donald McKee. Does anyone know who the FOWLERS might have been ?? Is anyone connected with any of the above names in the area at that time ?? (1916-1923) Janet jsend@hpcisp.com
Janet, The Champaign County Atlas for 1913 shows several Fowler farms in Kerr Township, close to the Vermilion County line, for U.G.Fowler, sections 9, 16, 17, 20 & 21; then on the 1929 census it shows land in the same township, on the Champaign / Vermillion line owned by Wiley M. sections 9, 16, 17, 22 & 31; Mrs. U.G. Fowler, section 17 & 20; L.S. Fowler, sections 20 & 21; W. (maybe Wiley?) sections 32, basically in the same places. Sections 9,16 and 21 are on the Champaign / Vermilion line. There is probably a lot more information at the Urbana Free Library. Maybe an obit of U.G. Fowler would give you more info. Jan . > > Does anyone know who the FOWLERS might have been ??
