1900 Fed. census shows two 20 year olds, Mary and Mabel HELM, living at the home of their uncle Charles D BABB, in Homer. Charles was born Jan 1867, and in the household there is also wife Alta M, b Oct 1867, and daughter Margaret b Jan 1899. There are also marriage licenses issued for Mary Helm (to Charles TROUP) and Mabel Helm (to Ralph HOLMES) a few years later. I haven't seen these yet. Joan, I have been trying to located my great grandfather Edward MALEY, Jr. I believe he was born Feb 1860 Pesotum,Champaign Co.,IL (Parkville) and died around 1893. I do not know where he was living at the time. I believe he was buried at St. Patricks Cemetery in Tolono,Champaign Co.,IL. Did they have death certificates then or could there have been a write up in the Champaign County Heald stating when he died and etc.? I know who his wife was and have lots of information on her, Rose Ann GORMAN but not on my great grandfather and his parents, Edward MALEY, Sr. and Catherine WHALEN side. I have been unable to located which port they arrived in CA-1850 (Edward MALEY, Sr. & Catherine WHALEN) as their first son Michael MALEY was b 24-Dec-1850 Mobile,Mobile Co.,ALA. Their second son, Francis "Frank" MALEY was b 22-Sep-1852 Cipo,IN; and their third son, Philip MALEY was b 10-Nov-1854 IL but don't know where in IL and then my great grandfather Edward MALEY, Jr. b Feb 1860, if this is correct date d 1893. Any information will be greatly appreicated as to where I might find this information. Pat MALEY-CURTIS anglers@bullshoals.net
Hello, I am trying to find information regarding the James Romine family that lived in Champaign County from approx. 1837-1844. (The older children stayed on longer). James' wife Elizabeth (Adkins) Romine supposedly died in Champaign around 1844. I have not been able to confirm this. Are there any death records from this time period?? Also, one of James Romine's children was married in Champaign and I would like to obtain copies of the marriage license. The childs names was Catherine Romine married John Black 3-4-1846. Could someone tell me where to write for this item and what the cost might be?? Finally, is there a library in Champaign that might have further information on this family? If so, are they on line?? Any addition informaiton or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks. Robin.

I had several ancestors in the Brown Twp near Fisher. Their names were Asa Davis, Hiram Hastings, and Wm Groves. All living in the area bginning about 1865. I have not seen their names mentioned which is not unusual but the question I have deals with not seeing anyone mentioned who lived near the town of Fisher. Would you have any idea why Fisher folks do not show up? Could it be Fisher had its own newspaper and some of the other small towns did not? Thanks Eldon Davis
Hi Joan I just read what appears to be a request from someone to you re look-up of an obit. I do not remember an email where you volunteered such service but if you did I would appreciate it very much if you would check on the following person who was my GG G/D and lived in Brown Twp and near Fisher from 1869-1894. The name is Asa DAVIS who died 18 Jan 1894. Thanks Eldon Davis
In the Champaign County Herald, I did not locate any more local recaps after the one that appeared in 1892 for 1891. The paper appears to run through 1899 with 1894 missing. But there was an Urbana Weekly Courier that ran in 1894. ---------------- Joan Lund j-lund@uiuc.edu
Joan, I would be happy to help type for this great project. Contact me off the list if you like. Thanks for the chance to help. Sally nitmuvs@aol.com 1890 Sheaves now on newspaper pages http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/IL/Champaign/1890/1890.html This concludes what I had typed so it will be a little while before I get any more on-line. And I have a couple of things to look up for a few of you which I will try to get to this next week or two. And I will check for later recaps after 1891. If I find more, anyone want to volunteer to type if I copy them and send them to you? I would do the html coding so you don't have to know how to do that.

Joan, I'm interested in an obituary for John Maxwell who died Mahomet, Champaign, IL 2 Jan 1890. Would you have access to that? Donna Jaster
If you contact the Urbana Free Library Archives, they do have an obituary file. Did you check the search site that was given a few days ago? Sometimes I can get this site to work and sometimes it doesn't. There is suppose to be some text added to the page about how to go about getting copies of the information but there has been some problems with getting this done. Bongard has a grain elevator, a few houses, and a Catholic Church with a cemetery. It would be considered a railroad station, I believe. It was originally called Bongard Station. >I have found several references to the term, "Bongard", on my Champaign >County index cards which I received from the Urbana Free Library. > >Does this term refer to a township, a city, a cemetery??? > >Any ideas? > >Thanks! > >Kevin Miller > >Researching the LOWRY, NOLAN, RYAN and CARRIGAN surnames in Champaign County, >Illinois.

I gave my surname to the lady who answered the phone. She excused herself and after a couple of minutes she said "There's a whole folder here. What would you like me to send you?" When I opened the mail, I was amazed. I had my grandfather's birth record, his parent's names, his wife's first husband's name, his children's names and his step children's names and birthdates.. All it cost me was postage and copies. They said they gave the first hour free. Later, after I had studied the material, I called and asked for more. I got court documents, medical records, etc. etc. This bunch cost me more, but it was still small. I thought "this genealogy thing is a breeze." Nothing since has been that easy. The tremendous growth of the hobby may keep them from giving you the same service, but they were very genealogy-friendly in 1993, and probably are still. Good Luck, Yvonne
The November 1886 and December 1886 have been corrected. I mixed them up the Nov. and Dec. 1887. I have had the visions of doing this. Thanks to Marilyn Yezek, it was just caught and corrected. If any of you think something is out of place, please let me know so I can go back and check it. Thank you.
Kevin, Bongard is basically a grain elevator on the old Illinois Central Railroad line south of Champaign between Philo and Villa Grove. It's been some years since the family sold the adjacent farm land, so things could have changed. L do not recall a cemetery but as a youngster I wasn't always looking for one. (g) I believe most residents were buried in one of the church yards in the surrounding towns. Hugh W.
