We would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com There we have just posted the following: CHAMPAIGN County Farm Burials (1890 - 1931) Note: These two pages take a while to load, but they are well worth the time. "This was transcribed by Tom Whiteside, who was working on this when he died. I was in the archives of the Urbana Library one day and I mentioned about your site and how you wanted records to do with Poor Houses. The Librarian said Tom had been working on this for Urbana and Champaign,Ill. She got a copy for me and this is what he had completed. He got most of his information from books and from undertakers' records. Tom did a lot of research, and he loved doing it! .He would be happy that someone could benefit from it. I understand that The Poor House is now Champaign County Nursing Home and that behind the home was the burial grounds. They have a plaque there telling what it used to be." Sharon Hansen khansen@soltec.net DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above)please click on POORHOUSES BY STATE and then click on ILLINOIS on the table of states. Then scroll WAAAAAAY down to the bottom of the page where we have the section for CEMETERIES. You will see this entry marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. Note: If you have visited the ULSTER County page recently, you may need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material.) There are some other pages on the site which may help you better understand poorhouses. They are all linked (to the left)off the homepage and include: HISTORY, LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS, and FEATURED ARTICLES. You may want to also review the ARCHIVED NEWSLETTERS to get an overview of what has been posted on the website and what some of our issues have been. The only way the material on the website will grow is through the suggestions and submissions of kind readers like you! So if you would like to e-mail me, PLEASE do so OFF-list using an e-mail link from our website. (I cannot maintain subscriptions to all the lists to which we make announcements.) Hope you enjoy the site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

Hey everybody, Have any of you tried this: http://www.distantcousin.com ? I think it is a pretty good site to search for your ancestors. ~Debbie In McLean County, Illinois~
We were pleased that 2 of our granddaughters (ages 2 and 5) were taught today during the Children's moment at First Chrisitan Church/Disciples of Chirst in Fort Smith, Arkansas how to "sign" Christ has Risen Indeed! They were too cute sitting in the back seat on the way home from church with our big girl, Dallas teaching her little cousin, Emilee, how to sign this important message. I discovered through the Champaign list that my Great, Great Grandfather, John L. Cailey was also a member of a Disciples congreation in Champaign County. It was a nice unknown spiritual "link" to my past. Thank you for passing the torch to the 5th geneation! Could you find for me the Dicks Funeral Home in Broadlands was in operation? I know it was first owned by Dicks brothers and later Sandy Dicks ran it. Thanks Jo Forren
Hi Scott, Just thought I'd let you know I checked the original book and the dates were transcribed just as they appear in it. There is another Pittman bio in another book who is a brother to George - who was born 1848, so 1847 may not be that out of line. For what it's worth; all the best, Celia >Hi Folks, > >In the Bio for George W. M. Pittman on the Champaign co. GenWeb site, it >states that he was born in 1847. Hi Folks, In the Bio for George W. M. Pittman on the Champaign co. GenWeb site, it states that he was born in 1847. Later it states that he entered Illinois Wesleyan University in the fall of 1861 which would make him just 14 years old which seems a little young to me (though I am employing a 20th/21st cent. mindset.) My question is, would 14 be a reasonable age for a person in that time period to enter college? To add to this quandry, I found a George W. Pittman in the 1910 census who was listed as age 69 which would be a birth year of about 1841. Yet that would make him about 20 upon entering Ill. Wesleyan which seems a tad old. Any ideas or comments would be most appreciated. Scott Pittman rsprgv@aol.com
