I keep reading, hoping I will see something on my Hays family in the Ilchampa--I found my gggrandfather, Rankin Hays in champaign co. census in 1860, but nothing after that. In the 1860 census, it shows three children still in the home, elizabent, Angeline and Mary. Celia snyder sent me an article written about his son, John c. Hays, which said that Hannah Hays--wife of Rankin, died in 1860 and that he died in 1864--that is as much as I was able to find. I live on the west coast, so it is not easy to research in Illinois, but I was able to spend a few hours at the Urbana free library while traveling through last year. It showed rankin and Hannah with 3 farm hands, but couldn't find anything that he was a landowner. I am surmising that he may have been managing one of his son's farms?? Sarah Hays blackmore was a sister to rankin, and I have information that she was buried along side her infant son, Milton, in the Old bliss cemetery--I don't see her name in the transcription of that cemetery, and that her husband, Laban records blackmore, died in sidney Illinois. Children of Laban and sarah Hays blackmore were:--Milton, Orlando, Mary ann, Hays, Jane,William and Spencer Blackmore. Also listed in my papers is Jane Hays, married to John thompson--they were also in champaign co. children of John and Jane Hays thompson were:---Jackson, Jane T., John H., Letitia, william, Presley, Mary ann, David, and Elizabeth Thompson. There were still Hays family members in champaign co. in the early 1900's, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be connected to ANY Hays there to see if we can make a connection. Thank you, Shirley Taylor
> There were Helms in LeRoy, Illinois. Grover and Laverne Helm. They have both There are a number of Helm families in the area. Some of them are probably related to me, and some of them aren't. I am interested in hearing about them because, if I ever get to writing this material up, I would want to "explain" other Helm families in the area just to make things clear. There is a John Helms family whose records I come across now & again in 19th century Champaign Co records. Not sure who that is -- I did come across a research who had a connection to that family but, if I remember correctly, didn't know much about that Helms family's origins (they did give me some info about John Helms' family). There are some others also; someone has recently pointed out a large cemetery grouping of Helms in Douglas Co. Michael Helm

There were Helms in LeRoy, Illinois. Grover and Laverne Helm. They have both passed on in the last 10-15 years and are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in LeRoy. They still have a daughter that lives in LeRoy about 50 years old. There was also a Grove Helm that passed away in Kentucky within the last two years I found it on the Lake Cumberland newspaper website. http://www.lakecumberland.com/news/lcn/ They have archives back to August 1998. ~Debbie In McLean County, Illinois~
Where in Kansas? Jean
I was riding around with my brother in the country last summer looking for cemeteries and I ran across what I think was called Stewart Cemetery. I don't know if it was in Dewitt County or McLean County. I was completely lost but I did find this name. Charles E. Stewart: 3-14-1856 to 2-26-1941 On stone is written: To teach mankind that they can do no wrong, and escape justice, leads many to do evil they never would have done had it not been for this misleading immoral doctrine. ~Debbie In McLean County, Illinois~

Debbie, there is beautiful, little Stewart Cemetery in Sangamon Twp hardly 1/4 mile from the Champaign CO line. It contains the graves and a few markers of 11 of my ancestors. I do have a Charles C. Stewart, 1859 to 1908, but he died in Allen CO, KS (along with many cousins and uncles). Dick

Look at this web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilchampa/churches/alice.html It's a reprint of a 1928 newspaper article on the history of the Alice chapel (on its demolition?), a local Methodist church. My interest in it should become clearer from this little extract: "Alice Chapel was built about 1882 or 1883 as well as I can remember. It was named for Mrs. Alice Babb Helm and I often wondered why. The Chapel was built on a hill directly across from Lynn Grove cemetery.... "The acre of ground on which it stood was a part of the land owned by Isaac Cole.... It was built by subscriptions and was on the Philo circuit of the Methodist Episcopal church, so our regular ministers were always the Philo resident pastor. "As I remember Rev. J. B. Martin was our first minister and later followed ...." Ok, it's clear from this that Joseph B Martin was a Methodist Episcopal minister and probably the Philo resident pastor. I have already found reference in Mrs Lund's postings of 1880's newspaper extracts to the subscription, and Rev Martin's participation in it, and also found references to him myself in the Champaign County Gazette for 1881, eg, "Rev J B Martin will begin a protracted meeting at Morris chapel to-night" (from Champaign Co Gazette, p4 c5, under "Crittenden Chronicles"). I'm very interested in any history or records pertaining to this church. The Helm family probably belonged to this Methodist church (I have another hint about this from a Quaker source). I know part of the background story about Alice Babb Helm and can answer Mrs. William Hanson's question from 1928 in part. Alice Babb & George Helm were married in 1880, and in the 1880 census I cited, they are living with George's father James Madison Helm in Philo Village, next to Rev Martin as mentioned. In Feb 1881 Alice Babb Helm died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter, having given birth to twins Mary & Mabel Helm. In February & March of 1881 TWO long obits appear for Alice in the Champaign Co Gazette, one from business associates of George Helm's, & one from her own family (in contrast, James M Helm, who died a few weeks later, didn't receive any). I haven't yet found mention of the subscription for the chapel but I believe it started in 1882. Sometime after this, perhaps in 1883, George Helm has legal and financial problems, and an ugly-sounding custody dispute seems to take place with members of the Babb family, either Alice's uncle or siblings seem to be involved. I don't know how or whether this gets resolved, but it appears the twin girls remained with the Babb family while George Helm married a Sidney resident, Jessie Black, sometime in the 1880's. I haven't found this marriage in Champaign Co so it probably took place elsewhere. There also is a second family. I don't fully know what happened -- George is my uncle, not my ancestor, & I haven't yet found any of his descendents, but I am pretty sure that some exist from both families. Also, I haven't found anyone who is researching this branch of the Babb family. However the details are slowly emerging as different newspapers are examined and court records found. But anyone who has anything to contribute, please let me know.
Interesting. I have a Babb in my line too. :-) .. The HELM family arrived in Champaign Co about 1853 (maybe as late as 1855). The parents, James Madison Helm & Agnes Carter Helm, were married and lived part of their lives in Ohio (Guernsey and Knox Cos, at least). However both were born in Virginia, and Madison Helm probably grew up there as best we can tell. They left Ohio about 1844 for Grant Co IN along with many of Madison's brothers. Finally they moved to Crittenden about 1853 as I said. One of J M Helm's younger brothers, Benjamin F Helm, also lived in Illinois altho he spent most of his adult life in Kansas & Indiana. I don't yet know where he settled in Ill -- some of his children were born there -- it was probably in the decade before the Civil War. Some "allied" families also made the same trek. The BONNELL family was heavily involved with the Helms in Guernsey Co OH (neighbors, court officials). Cindrilla Bonnell married Francis Helm, James Madison's brother. Cindrilla's brother Jonathan Milburn Bonnell moved to Champaign Co about 1860 from Grant Co OH. Francis & Cindrilla, & Cindrilla's mother Ruth, stayed in Grant Co IN. Alfred BOCOCK was an early settler of Grant Co IN; he was from Highland Co OH originally. About 1850 he moved his family to Crittenden TWP. I have a feeling he may have persuaded or supported Madison Helm's move to Crittenden a few years later; he sold land to Helm around 1855 and they surely knew each other from Grant Co IN if not earlier. James Madison Helm's son Benjamin married Emma Bocock. I think that the WILSON family, that James Madison's son James William Helm married into, is also from Ohio. Quite a few folks went on to Kansas. Two of James Madison Helm's children did; several of his brothers and/or their children made that trip; mostly in the 1880's. I was reading 1881- era Champaign Co Gazettes recently and there are frequent mentions of trips out to Kansas & Colorado: something like, "if you're going on a buying trip to Kansas, don't overlook the comfortable and swift direct train to Kansas City now offered by the ICRR". I haven't looked at the whole web of people that these folks were involved with, but there is sure a story there about how migrations worked in the 19th century.
