Hi, Have you tried the Historical Society? We were there this summer for the first time & they were very helpful. Their museum has lots of old photos & they have lots of contacts. I envey your purchase. We loved the town & it's beautiful old homes. I found out while visiting the Historical Society that my gr grandfather, Jethro Jefferis, built several buildings there ie the Baptist Church & the first seminary buildings. Enjoy that house!!! Nicholas Warfield (b1796, probably in MD), came to Carroll County from Franklin Co., PA, in the mid to late 1840's. I've had trouble finding any obituary for him in 1869, the supposed date of his death. I can't swear to it, but I believe I've seen the Schreiner or Schriner name before, probably on a late-1800's Plat map or perhaps a census. I'll check it tonight. Good luck. Since my ancestors came to Carroll Co. in 1854, while your are viewing those 1860 to 1869, microfilms, I'd appreciate it greatly if you would keep an eye out for any mention of the SCHREINER, or SCHRINER, surname. No need to do anything extraordinary, just let me know if you run across them. I will try to obtain the info. and films you mentioned also. Thanks again, Cheers Jim

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Yg.2ADE/899.1 Message Board Post: The best source for newspapers of Carroll County (or all of Illinois) is the Illinois Historical Library in Springfield. They have microfilm of most of the newspapers of Illinois, and they are available for interlibrary loan and in most cases, to buy. I have both done reasearch there and bought a roll of microfilm from them (1860-1869 Mt Carroll -- just misses your dates). Probably the biggest newspaper at the time was the Savanna Times Journal, published in Savanna. There was also the Mt. Carroll Mirror Democrat (under several names). Other Carroll County Newspapers were in Chadwick, Lanark, Milledgville, Shannon, and Thompson, although I didn't check to see if issues were available for the 1870's from those papers. So it depends on where in Carroll County you ancestors lived. There is a searchable database of Illinois newspapers that gives the holdings of the Illinois Historical Library, but I don't have the URL handy. A quick search of "Illinois Newspapers" should find it. The library publishes a paperback book of its holdings, listing which issues of which newspapers it has. Copies of the Savanna Times Journal can also be found in the genealogy room of the Savanna library, if you are in the area. Be aware that if you don't have an exact date and want to look through all the newspapers from 1870 to 1879 searching for someone, you have a very tedious task ahead of you. Headlines were small or were not used at all, and obituaries can be found ANYWHERE in the paper. You might find one in the middle of an article on a new shipment of Michigan apples that has just come in! I just started browsing my 1860-1869 Mt. Carroll newspaper microfilm real and was able to get through about three issues an hour.
Would someone kindly tell me the name of the newspaper I could contact for an obit for a death that occurred on Nov. 24, 2001 in Mt. Carroll ? Thank you so much, Cynthia cfsalvador@elknet.net

Hi, My name is Bob Mosher, and I am the USGenWeb Coordinator for Carroll and Whiteside Co. sites. I live in Arizona and taught a class this fall in Computers and Genealogy, I set up a web page to use during the class and thought that you might find the site interesting, it is NOT a comprehensive, 100's of links site, but rather is links to sites that I have found to be most useful, plus links to some material that I used in the class, census analysis, sources, etc. I invite you to give it a look! http://members.home.net/bmosher9/ASUWLLA/ASUWLLA.htm Bob Mosher
