It is possible that they operated a Drug Store in Lanark in the late 1800's. I would be interested in any descendants. It is possible that a Scott Hartle accompanied them in their move to Illinois. I guess they added the "y" so that people would pronounce it with a long A instead of a short one.

A little over 5 miles south of Mt. Carroll, on highway 78, you intersect the Argo Fay Road. Turn west, right if going south, and 1 1/2 miles you are at Argo. The Argo Fay road continues southwesterly and then west to Thompson. Am not sure about the Fay part of the name. Since the small community is labeled Argo on the map, the implication would be that somewhere along the route there should be a Fay, but I don't find it! Argo is located in York Township, and the Upper York Cemetery is there.

URGENT REQUEST!: Now that we are over the holidays, This years is our 350th Anniversary of the landing of the Swartwout family in North America. The name has many variations such as Swarthout, Swartout, Swartwood, Swathwood, Swarthwood etc. We need help in gather lines, pictures, articles, wills, what ever you have stashed in your attic. We would really appreciated it if you shared with us what you had, there a literally thousands of us here looking for our roots, looking for connections. For our 350th Anniversary we need to updated our list of folks out there that are descendants somewhere along the line of any of those variations. We also have a family newsletter that cost only $5.00 per year, a real bargain. Just send it your mailing address. Every day I get e-mail asking me for help. Up here in Canada, there were two brothers that had huge families, all the remains of their descendants are the female sides. All the male went back to the States. I'm am the maintainer of "The Updated Swartwout Chronicles" People submit their lines-ged-coms etc. and I just drop them into the data base. It is everyone's database. Each person is responsible for their own submissions. It is not copyrighted. Kathy kathyhoeldke@sympatico.ca ldyk@hotmail.ca

I thought you were trying to FIND Charlotta...was surprised when I found her on the same plot, but thought perhaps the stone was worn, etc. So, I assume your interest is because she is buried on the same plot which implies some possible relationship. In the 1850 census in Mt. Carroll Township is this family: Ralph Southworth 34 M Farmer $400 NY Elizabeth J. 20 F KY Amelia 1 F ILL Elvira Trask 15 F NY Rebecca Bently 47 F KY Charlotte Southworth 75 F MA (Mass) From this, I would suspect that Rebecca is Elizabeth's mother and that Charlotte is Ralph's mother. From the marriage index: SOUTHWORTH, RALPH BENTLEY, ELIZABETH JANE (SEEBENTTEY) CARROLL 10/03/1847 00C/0151 00000169 This still doesn't explain WHY she is buried in that plot, but maybe it gives some clues...or some others to follow for clues! Bob and myself have referred to the cemetery readings done by the local genealogical society. The members walked the cemeteries in 1977 so you have physically seen what they have seen at the the cemetery. In cases where there were sexton records to compare with any information not included on the stones but in the records it was included in parenthesis. We have also looked at the extracted 1850 & 1860 census records, also compiled by the genealogical society. You may want to look at the actual microfilmed record, though I doubt much more could be found there. The Carroll County death records are not recorded any further back than 1877, so there is no death certificate available. There are some early newspapers from that time available for Mt. Carroll from the Illinois State HIstorical Libarary in Springfield, that you can get through interlibrary loan. (Your librarian will know how to do that)However, Thomson papers do not go back beyond 1955. There may be something in the Mt. Carroll ones, as it the county seat. According to the Illinois Land Sales on the Illinois Secretary of State's webpage, a Ralph Southworth purchased 39.5 acres at 2.50 per acre in 1853 in Section 16, York Township. That is all the information regarding Carroll COunty Southworths that I have been able to locate. I hope that this information is of some assistance to you. Cathy Brunner Mt.
