Dick, Although Bond County was one of the earliest counties in the Illinois Territory, I think that Shadrach Bond went to the statehouse at Vandalia from his home in Randolph County and never lived in Bond Co. He traveled from Nashville, TN with my Randolph County forebears, whose name was Harmon, by way of places in Missouri, eventually crossing into Illinois Territory at Cape Girardeau, still with the Harmons and others in a train. I think that he lived at Kaskaskia prior to becoming the first Governor. Randolph County (the second county created from the first county, which was St. Clair) was, along with St. Clair the population center of the Illinois Territory. Chicago was not even thought of at the time and all that existed, where Chicago would eventually be, was an old outpost and fort known as "Guardian Angel." I think it was originally French. Bond County was named in honor of Shadrach in the same way that Edwardsville was named for Ninian Edwards, and Lincoln for Abraham Lincoln even before he was president. None of these men ever lived in those places. Warm regards, Dick Hudson
