Message text written by "Dick" >Mike, I think some of the Couch family moved to East St. Louis, IL. Check the St. Clair County, IL census. Dick Hudson < ============== Dick, Thanks for the reply. I will check the St. Clair County census. The family (Avery and Nancy Couch) was in Monroe County in 1850, then St. Clair, then I think the family split up. Some went to Missouri and Arkansas. Some either stayed in Illinois or later came back to Illinois. I recently learned that there is a marriage record in 1864 in St. Louis for John Taylor to Sarah Couch. They may be the couple who appears in the 1870 Bond County census (Sarah may be the daughter of Avery and Nancy). I had thought that Nancy (wife of Avery) probably died in the 1850's, as Avery remarried in Missouri about 1856, but now suspect that he may have divorced or deserted Nancy, and that she may be the Nancy Couch in the 1870 census of Bond County in the John and Sarah Taylor household. Avery's son, Henry Couch, evidently moved back to Bond County from Arkansas in the 1870's, as he was married (for the fourth time) in Bond County in 1870's, and appears in the 1880 Bond County census. Two of his daughters were married in Bond County (in the 1880's, as I remember). I'm looking for the Township in Bond County where John and Sarah Taylor, along with Nancy Couch, were listed in the 1870 census. I know that they were in Bond County (I saw them in a printed copy of the 1870 Bond County census). Thanks again for taking the time to reply to my query. Mike Landwehr
There is a marriage record of a Robert H. Powell marrying Martha Rench on April 6, 1862 in Bond Co. Martha has a second marriage to William Bilyeau on August 1, 1864. Does anyone have info on what happened to Robert? We are thinking perhaps he was killed in Civil War. Did Robert and Martha have any children? I have also some info on a Miller family in Bond Co. These Millers moved to Bond Co from Darke Co, Ohio. They are listed on the 1860 census living in Greenville Twp. Parents names were Henry and Ann Miller born in PA. Some of the older children stayed in Ohio. The ones listed on 1860 census are: Philip - teacher John - shoemaker Henry - shoemaker Mary Malinda Malinda married George W. Powell. Anyone have a connection to Malinda's siblings? Henry, Sr. and Ann are buried in the Maxey Cemetery. And finally, there is another Powell marriage in Bond Co between Wiley Powell and Elizabeth Cripe on June 28, 1860. We know that Wiley died while serving in the calvary in the Civil War in AR in 1863. Elizabeth then married George Baits Dec 1865. Does anyone have any children born to Wiley and Elizabeth Cripe Powell? Another Powell descendant has a photo of a Josiah and Amanda Baits and wonders how they connect to our family. A neice of Malinda Miller's, Lura Miller also married a Baits, so we don't know if Josiah and Amanda are from Elizabeth and George Baits or Lura and Charles Baits. Thanks, Linda Garrett
Mike, I think some of the Couch family moved to East St. Louis, IL. Check the St. Clair County, IL census. Dick Hudson
I'm a "newbie" to this mailing list, and am interested in the Couch family who lived in Bond county in 1870's-1890's (and perhaps longer). Several years ago, while in Salt Lake City, I noted a John and Sarah Taylor, both 26, in a transcribed copy of the 1870 census of Bond County. Living with them was a 57-year-old Nancy Couch, who I suspect was Sarah Taylor's mother. Does anyone on the list have access to that transcribed 1870 Bond County census? If so, I wonder if you would do me a favor and check to see what Township the above entry appears in, or which page or dwelling number was associated with the entry. I recently went through the 1870 Bond County census on microfilm, and apparently missed the entry I was looking for. Thanks so much. Mike Landwehr

According to the 1860 census Greenville Twp., Bond Co, IL a Martha Rench, age 14, was living in the household of Aaron Rench, age 25, farmer. His wife was Mary E. age 20. Others in household included: Fredonia age 4 Catherine age 2 Hepziahab age 7 mo Rhoda age 69 Is this the Martha Rench who married Robert H. Powell in 1865? And who were her parents? Living close to them on this census was the family of John Rench listing Wiley Powell there as a farmhand. He was Robert's brother and married Elizabeth Cripe in 1860. She had a second marriage in 1865 to George Bates. Anyone know what happened to Wiley? Was he killed in the Civil War? Thanks, Linda Garrett
We were in Bond Co. on May 31.; took pictures of tombstones at the Hazel Dell Cemetery. Rather an interesting place. Is there anyone living in that area or did live there that can give us a little history on that road? Rather unusual brick road runs in front of it. Any idea how that happened? Most of the time we see brick used in towns. How did it happen to be used on that road? We are researching the NEVINGER family who are buried there. According to one of their obits they lived in a farm house next to the cemetery. None of the houses at this time that are close appear to be old farm houses. Does someone have available plat books with maps back to the 1890's that would show which property (farm) they lived on? Most of the houses at this time are much newer; wondering if the NEVINGERS old farm house might have been torn down? Carolyn at the email address of: DavidOF@wesnet.com

Our state co-ordinator, Susan Tortorelli, has scanned in every Illinois county (as it existed in 1875) and uploaded them for an upcoming project "The United States Digital Map Project". Not all of the links are working yet, but if you want a LARGE map of any county in Illinois click on the following address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/illinois/il1875/ and then pick (from a long list) which county (or part of Chicago) you want, but BE WARNED --- these files are large (from 130KB to over 1 MB). These maps show the county, each township, and each mile within each township, roads, and towns as they existed in 1875. If you just want a copy of our county, go to our website, click on "Maps", and you'll find a link to the new LARGE map. If you want to look at the new project (I don't believe it's been announced yet) go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/ NOTE: I have also posted a note on the welcome page of our website letting you know that I'll be gone most of the month of June, so please be patient if you send me any mail -- after June 5th I won't be looking at it until early July. Greetings Fellow Listers, My husband and I just returned from a trip to Illinois to visit family members. On our way westward from North Carolina, we stopped in southern Illinois so my husband could visit the town of his birth (Mulberry Grove). Happily, we were able to locate his grandfather's home where my husband lived the first few years of his life (back in the '30s). We went to the Mulberry Grove Cemetery to look for gravestones. Did find his great-grandmother, Martha Ann Shoptaw, but her gravestone was ready to fall off the hillside into the depression below. Can anyone tell me who to contact at the Mulberry Grove Cemetery who will prop up her gravestone to keep it from falling? We didn't see any sort of office building or caretaker's site on the cemetery grounds. Thanks for any help you can send our way. Carole Shoptaw in North Carolina czechgal@juno.com

Below is from a longer family history written or dictated by Adam Badgley or maybe his brother Elijah.in 1890. They both lived into their 80 and 90's respectively. The family came very early to St. Clair County. Below is the part that mentions Montgomery Co. and Bond Lake. In any case the writer was getting very old when he wrote this so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the geography or names. His memory was still clearer than mine. It is mostly about early St. Clair descendants of Rev. David Badgley. It can be found in Vol. 1 of the Worl d Family Tree (Tree #4967 search using Badgley, Family History) (Family Tree Ma ker) Genealogy Program) among other places. >>Mary, oldest daughter of Rev. David Badgley, born in Hardy Co. Va., came to this country with her parents. She married Pemira Hand and they settled on a piece of land that her father gave them, where Marion Badgley now lives. They raised a family of 2 boys and 7 girls. They sold their place and moved to Green Co., Ill. Both died near Greenville. They owned a good farm at their death, seemed to live honest and upright, seemed to be rather a bad manager. Two of the girls went to Texas and one to Calif. and what has become of the family God only knows. They all disappeared from this part of the country. Nmes of their children- Soleman, Rachel, Rebecca, Stephen, Rhoda, Sarah, Persilla, Milla and Terinda. Betsy, second daughter of Rev. David came to this country with her parents from Va. in 1797. Married 3 times, first time to a man of name Starr, they had one son. He [Starr] died then she married Titsworth. He died then she married one Poel Smith, had one daughter by him. Her two {?} sons lived and died in Montgomery Co., Ill. One of her grandsons is county surveyor of Montgomery Co. and lives at Litchfield, Ill. Rachel, third daughter of Rev. David Badgley. She came to this country with her parents. She married Daniel Starr, they raised a family of 6, three boys and 3 girls; they lived on a place in Monroe Co. Near Bonds Lake. He was a farmer, but they lived only to be about 60 years old. Their youngest son Daniel married and moved to Texas and died there, his widow is still living, she stays with her son Burton. Names of Rachels children- Pemira married Crosia Tuning, Henry married Betsy Narkow, Daniel married Angeline Lenecy, Polly married Philippe Penn, Catherine married 3 times, last one by name of Malone. Rhoda married 3 time , last one by name of Rhily. << I don't have any more about the above people. My ancestor connected to the Badgleys is Solomon Spann who first married Emily Badgley and was in St. Clair, she died then he married Clarissa Whitlatch.and lived in Perry Co. Even though he was in his late 50's and had a newborn he joined the 13th Calvary and soon died in the Civil War. At some point they moved to Franklin Co. ~Paula~ >>Subj: [ILBOND-L] SMITH/ca 1815/Bond CO salt works Date: 5/9/99 8:17:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: ectocus@21stcentury.net (Edward Tocus) To: ILBOND-L@rootsweb.com SMITH, BADGLEY, STARR, TITSWORTH.
