Although I had known for years that my great-grandfather, Robert O. White of Bond County, had written a journal of his experiences in the Mexican War, no one knew where the family copy was. I finally have found it, thanks to the power of the internet. The journal was published in Greenville in 1847. I have added it to the list of publicaitons in which I do lookups. There aren't as many names as I would have liked, but he does talk about those who died and were sick. We have included the index on this site. There should be a link to the index from the lookup page. Mary

Hello Linda G. Because it was where our Country was pretty much born every one thinks that "Philly" was the place , but it was indeed new York. In fact poor old George had spent most of his money on the war. His property sit right square in the middle of where four counties merged and he was behind in tax with each county. A neighbor lent him the money to go to New York so he could be sworn in as President. The history they omit to teach in high school is more interesting than what they do teach sometimes :-) Walt ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Garrett <fredd1907@earthlink.net> To: <ILBOND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 27, 1999 11:10 AM Subject: Re: [ILBOND-L] Thanksgiving proclamation > Thanks for the enlightenment, Walt. Thanks for the enlightenment, Walt. I was thinking Philadelphia was the seat of government in the early days. Thanks for the post. I didn't know it had originally been suggested by George Washington. It was officially instituted in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. It's also interesting to note George Washington was in New York City when he signed this proclamation. Linda G.

Dick, Although Bond County was one of the earliest counties in the Illinois Territory, I think that Shadrach Bond went to the statehouse at Vandalia from his home in Randolph County and never lived in Bond Co. He traveled from Nashville, TN with my Randolph County forebears, whose name was Harmon, by way of places in Missouri, eventually crossing into Illinois Territory at Cape Girardeau, still with the Harmons and others in a train. I think that he lived at Kaskaskia prior to becoming the first Governor. Randolph County (the second county created from the first county, which was St. Clair) was, along with St. Clair the population center of the Illinois Territory. Chicago was not even thought of at the time and all that existed, where Chicago would eventually be, was an old outpost and fort known as "Guardian Angel." I think it was originally French. Bond County was named in honor of Shadrach in the same way that Edwardsville was named for Ninian Edwards, and Lincoln for Abraham Lincoln even before he was president. None of these men ever lived in those places. Warm regards, Dick Hudson
Hello list, I have just learned that Shadrach Bond was my ancestor, but I don't have any information on him. Can anyone help me, please? Thank you and have a great day. Dick DeBary, FL

Looking for info on Francis M. PHILLIPS, who was a "clergyman" on the 1880 census for Bond County. His wife was Mary E. Had children Myrtle b. 1868, Charles C. b. 1871, Minnie E. b. 1877, and Hallie F. b. 1879. Would like to know name of church, wife's maiden name, and/or any info on children. Thanks, Lori

I'm also trying to locate the cemetery were he is buried.I have the death-certificate of Jacob. He died Montgomery County, Il at the Hillsboro Hospital. He lived at Panama, Il, he was buried at Sunnyside Cemetery at Soranto, Il. I have written to the Library at Hillsboro and they say they can't find one. Could anybody help with this? Correction....William Riggins worked on the John File farm. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. In my haste I didn't proof read this morning. Thanks again. Ruth
I am researching William Van Buren Riggins. This is his story and it's all I have: William was born February 1839 at Salem, Stokes County, NC. His father is said to have been a doctor. His father was born in Ireland and mother born in Scotland. He was the youngest of a very large family. His father died when he was six and I am assuming that his mother was already dead. He was bonded out to a man named Reddick who was probably his older brother-in-law and had a tan yard where East St Louis IL now stands. William was to work for Reddick until he was 21. At that time he would be given a horse, a saddle and $100.00. Reddick was so cruel to him that he ran away to work on the John Fine farm in Bond County. At the age of 21 he joined the Union Army and spent about 3 months in the cival war, until he was taken ill. He married Mary Jane Hudson in Bond County in1870. Looking for connections. Ruth Dunham
Still trying to link my Joab Watson who married Elizabeth Robinson in 1828 in Bond County IL to parents and siblings. The Bond County family history book mentioned that Joab had a brother Isaac. So that would be one sibling. Also there is a James R. Watson living next door to Joab when he lived in Madison County in 1830. Joab named his first son James R. So if any of you are researching the Watsons from Bond or Madison County and can help me, please do so.
