I finally resorted to ordering her death certificate from the state. My intuition tells me the Sarah Smith in Alexander Co. is her. I also found two sons in the census that I didn't even know about!! Researching from TX is difficult. Bobby Toler helped me get Riley's death certificate from Union Co and it showed that he is buried in Phillip's cemetery alonf with many other family members. The cemetery index doesn't list Riley or Sarah, so they must be buried in unmarked graves. Would you have any idea that I might find Riley's grave?

    1. Book "Alexander County Illinois, History & Families 1819-1980"
    2. Here are the lookups that were requested, the index is a surname only index. This book contains a brief history of the county, and then a brief history on each town in the county, each church and school, a business history, clubs and organizations, and family histories that were submitted by residents. Each family history has a title (such as Miller-Willis) and then the index is by surname and page only. If the family you are looking for was not still living in Alexander County in the 1980's there is a good chance they are not in the family histories. I purchased my copy from one of the editors, Louise Ogg. I believe you can reach her or her husband Russel at the Cairo Custom House where they volunteer. Using a net search I came up with this number for the Custom House: (618) 734-1019 They would know if/where additional copies of the book are for sale. I have two small children and work full time, so I apologize it take me a bit to do surname lookups. Please scroll down to the surname you requested. Karima SMITH - there are 38 pages with mention of surname SMITH on the page, I tried the other surname you gave rather than looking up each of these. LINCOLN - There are 3 pages with LINCOLN mentioned. There is a reference to a Lewis LINCOLN of Carbondale, IL who married a window Catherine Smith nee Turner in the Biography of George SMITH, born about 1806 in England and married Annie GROVES in England, after her death married Catherine TURNER in Canada. The biography does not give a submitter name. There is another biography on George's son Egbert and his children, but it doesn't give the submitter name either. Sue Mullins ARTER - none listed HARRELL - there are 6 pages with the surnmae HARRELL mentioned. Flossie Mae HARRELL, a reference I couldn't find on the CLUTTS pages, William Ray HARRELL in COX bio, Samuel HARRELL married to Estelle SMITH, Bill HARRELL son of Samuel. SAUP - none listed MAGEE - none listed - one MAGHEE, Mrs MAGHEE, mother of Martha Ann Amanda Jane Bradley EICHENBERGER - none listed Nicole Simmons McRAVEN - 7 pages with McRAVEN mentioned. Nellie McRAVEN, daughter of Pilgrim and Elizabeth Phillips McRaven. Benjamin McRaven, her grandfather from North Carolina and his wife Millie Vick, Juanita McRaven, wife to Marin Elwood KERR, daughter of Benjamin F. McRaven born abt 1875 and Nellie Williams, Benjamin's father Lewis McRaven born 1812 and wife Cordellia, Patrick Henry McRaven b. 1854 son of Pilgrim, lists many of his chidlren. Dave BROWN - none listed - you might try a city directory, this book does not list addresses. Kathy Vickers OEHLER, Carl - there is a biography titled "Oehler-McManus on page 235. Joyce Jackson MULHAM- none listed Becky Davis DAVIS - there are 18 pages that mention the DAVIS surname, glancing through them there is a bio on William Caswell DAVIS father of Harvey Ellsbury DAVIS who married Etta Augusta Abernathie, Annaliza Davis and her father J.H. Davis she married a Laffon, the bio is on him, doesn't give anything else on J. H. Davis the others do not mention your two names.

    3. I read many of your emails about researching in Alexander Co IL and I had to make a trip to Cairo today for business reasons. When I was there I introduced myself to the County Clerk , told her I was with ILGenWeb and the Regional Coordinator for the Southern Counties which included Alexander Co IL , and also introduced myself as the Coordinator for Alexander Co IL for now. I asked about genealogy and I was told that they do not do any requests for Genealogy as they do not have the manpower to do it. OKAY the County Clerk also stated to me that it is open to the public for Genealogy if YOU do the research. Which means you will have to come in person or pay someone to research for you. You will not be able to research doing election time it will not be open. When I was there I also visited the Cairo Library and will make a webpage for them. Librarian was very helpful in what they can do. I was allowed to photo items in the Library. I am meeting Louise Ogg tommorrow at the Custom House to see what I can recieve from them. I relate to Louise Ogg so this may be a plus for the Alexander Co IL website. I met her husband who was at the Cairo Custom house very nice man and very helpful.
