They were located on the south side of the cemetery near a ravine, side by side....Anna Gerst born June 23, 1858.....died Dec. 14, 1923. The other was a military stone Adolph Gurst, IL Corpl. IL Inf 5 Div June 11, 1921. Adolph is associated with my husband's greatgrandfather, Luther David McCoy. He shot him... It was an accidental shooting. Adolph was about 15 at the time and a friend of Luther's nephew....the nephew had a new rifle and they were passing it around "unloaded" Adolph dryfired it and shot Luther between the eyes......in front of his entire family. I was told that Adolph drowned in later life, though this is not proven. Hope that this helps. Sue

Surnames: LEVERETT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/He.2ADI/326 Message Board Post: Hi List. I need help. My Leverett family lived in East Cape as proven by the 1870 census. A few years before and a few years after the 1870 census many things such as death, birth and marriage happened within this family. I recently visited the Courthouse and library in Cairo and was suprised not to find much if any information on anything or anyone who lived in the northern part of Alexander Co. during the 1870 timeframe. I thought I read somewhere that the folks in the northern part of the county used the courthouse in Thebes for their business in those days. At any rate does anyone know where I might find any 1870 records other than at Cairo. The surnames I'm looking for are LEVERETT, SMITH and REYNOLDS. All suggestions appreciated. Kathy
Hi My great grandfather Oliver H. C. P. Stout married Meilla Ann "Millie" Bankston in Alexander County on July 29, 1869. Oliver, Millie and baby daughter Mary are found in the 1870 census of Alexander County in the Santa Fe Precinct. By April, 1872, Oliver married Sarah Jane Bryant. Even though Sarah's obituary says they were married in Illinois, I have never found a record of the marriage. I would like to know what happened to Millie and Mary. Was there an epidemic in the area around 1870? I don't think there was a divorce or Oliver's son, my grandfather William Hubert Stout surely wouldn't have married Millie's neice Nora Bell Bankston in Johnson County IL in 1891. So my two questions are what happened to Milley and Mary and where did Oliver marry Sarah Jane Bryant. (Sarah's sister Nancy married Pete Ussery in Johnson Co. in 1870 but I did not find their parents William and Mary Bryant in any records.) Ted Stout

Wilson possibly born in Nov 1876 and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. He had sons names James Cephus, Louis, Fred and Glen and he had a daughter named Rose Holeman of Cairo and two half sisters Della Lesar and Mrs. Burd. He had a half brother Ernest Everett of Zenith, Mo. I am looking for the brother of Alford Henry Wilson b 1874 Alford Wilson lived with the William Everts family in Tamms. This family included Sallie who is likely to be Alford Wilson's mother. As a stepson he had Della, Gancy and Birdie for half sisters and John E as a step brother. Della and Ernest attended James I. Wilson's funeral and listed themselves as half brother and half sister. What is the relationship between this family and the Wilsons? Is Sallie Alford's mother and where was she born and what was her maiden name? Who was her husband and possible father of Alford?

I would suggest you try to get a copy of Alexander-Pulaski County Plat map booklet, which used to be sold at the Farm Bureau office in Mounds, Ill. It shows all the small backroads and highways in both counties. Also, a full tank of gas when you go exploring, because it's very easy to take a wrong turn and have to drive for miles before you can figure out where you are when you start driving thru some of the areas you mentioned.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/He.2ADI/159.2 Message Board Post: Tim, The town of America was originally formed about 2 miles South of what is now Mound City at the mouth of Cache River where it emptied into the Ohio river. It was in Alexander County. An ancestor of mine had a license to operate a ferry across the Cache river. Due to flooding, most of the people moved 7 or 8 miles North and formed a new town of America. They built their town on what they thought was the bank of the Ohio River, planning on being a properous river town. When the flood waters receded the town was about 1 mile from the bank of the Ohio river, thus it never prospered. There are a couple of very small cemeteries on the county gravel road. I think they were family cemeteries. You can check at the Cairo City Public Library. They have a book on the cemeteries of Alexander and Pulaski Counties. I hope this helps in your search.
