James article was front page with pictures of the cars and one of him younger. I can scan and send to you if you like. The Herald Whig Dec. 10, 1966 James R. Collins, 24, died; Alva Lierle injured James R. Collins, 24, of 625 Cherry was killed in a two car crash on Broadway west of thirthieth in front of Sandy's drive-in restaurant - Friday night at 11:55. Collins, who was caught between the dashboard and the front seat of the car in which he was riding, was dead when he reached St. Mary hospital in the city ambulance. Reported in satisfactory condition in Blessing hospital with injuries to his nose and left shoulder is Alva Lierle, 68, of Liberty. Leo J. Eldridge, Jr., 18, son of Mr. And Mrs. Leo J. Eldridge of 835 North Sixth is reported in satisfactory condition in St. Mary hospital with injuries to his left eye and nose. Police reported that the car in which Collins and Eldridge were riding as passengers was driven by a 15 year old boy police did not identify. The car is owned by Collins' father, Arthur and the youths had attended a Senior High school basketball game and had stopped at Sandy's drive-in. As they drove out of Sandy's onto Broadway from the center drive and started to turn west their car was in a collision with one driven west by Lierle. The impact spun the Lierle car, owned by the State of Illinois, completely around, and it continued to the east, landing in a ditch on the south side of the highwayabout 625 feet from the accident scene approximately at Thirty first and Broadway. Where police arrived, Lierle was standing along the road about 300 feet from the scene. The right side of the Collins auto was peeled by the impact and the car curved back into the west drive at Sandy's. The front door, torn off by the impact, was lying nearby and Eldridge, thrown from the car was lying 15 feet away when police arrived. It took several minutes to free Collins from the front seat where he was wedged against the dashboard. Police and the state's attorney are investigating the collision. Lierle is traveling superintendant of state garages in the Illinois Bureau of machinery, and is chairman of the Adams county Democratic central committee. He also farms and operates a garage at Liberty. James Richard Collins was born Sept. 13, 1942, in Oquawka, a son of Arthur S. and Mary Mildred Parsons Collins. A resident of Quincy for 17 years, he was graduated from Senior High School in 1960 and was a member of the Y. M. C. A. He was employed as a stock boy by Motorola, Inc. Surviving are the parents, three brothers, Arthur Ray Collins, Philip Eugene Collins, both of Quincy, and David William Collins who is serving in the navy and is stationed at Lemore naval air station in California, a sister, Mrs. Max (Maude) Meyer of Clayton; a grandmother, Mrs. Charles Collins, Sr., of Clayton, and a grandfather, Charles J. Parsons of Oquawka. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The Herald Whig Dec 11, 1966 Two Charged in fatal accident Two drivers were arrested by Quincy police Saturday night as the result of the two car accident in which James R. Collins, 24, of 625 Broadway was killed Friday night in front of Sandy's drive-in restaurant on Broadway just west of Thirtieth. Daniel P. Ohnemus, 15, of Route 7, Quincy was charged with operating a motor vehicle without an operator's license and leaving the scene of an accident. Alva Lierle, 68, of Liberty, was charged with hit and run. Lierle remained in satisfactory condition at Blessing hospital with injuries to his nose and shoulders. Police said a car driven by Ohnemus drove out of the restaurant and started to turn west. The auto was struck broadside by the westbound Lierle vehicle, police said. Leo J. Eldridge, Jr., 18, of 835 North Sixth and Collins both were passengers in the Ohnemus car. Eldridge was reported in poor condition last night in St. Mary hospital with head injuries.
