I had been to Quincy many times as a child...always from Carthage (my hometown) through West Point, Stillwell, Loraine, etc.and knew the "back way" as we called it fairly well. I haven't lived in Carthage for fifteen years. While coming back from St. Louis this past spring, I drove the "new road" from Quincy to West Point for the first time and was really impressed...I knew where I was but constantly thought I was a little "off" because everything was on the "wrong side of the road" from where I remember it. I probably spent too much time looking away from the road in an attempt to constantly determine exactly where I was! My paternal grandmother lived in Loraine at the time of her marriage in 1935. I've got many maternal relatives in the Golden and Coatsburg areas, but the bulk of my family were from southern Hancock County.
