The first thing I did when seeking information on my grandfather, James Hewitt, who lived in Kansas when he deserted his family in 1892 was to find a newspaper item detailing his departure, He had taken a load of grain to his home town Robinson, Kansas, put his wagon & horses to the livery stable, purchased a train ticket to the next town. On the train he purchased a ticket to Grand Island, Nebraska, but left the train at Fairbury Nebraska. From there I know not where he went. However the courthouse in Brown County Kansas showed that he was being sued for money that he borrowed. Since then have I have learned that James Hewitt was in the 1880 census in Quincy Illinois living with an uncle and aunt, Lewis & Julia Coder and his parents are Oliver P. Hewitt & wife Phoebe Chapman the daughter of William Chapman also of Quincy. I have received a response from one whose family raised James Hewitt which helps to fill in some blanks. Can anyone supply information on the Hewitt, Coder or Chapman families residing in Quincy before & after 1880? Thank you! Margaret
