The 1850 census of Burton, Adams County shows a William Richards (55, VA), wife Margaret (50, VA), and children Amestad, Louisa, Townsend, and Sarah; as well as Josiah Richards (52, VA), wife Hannah (51, VA), and children John, Josiah, Sarah, Ann, and Susan. One source lists that at least one of these possible brothers settled in Adams County as of 1831. I've also seen the photos posted of the gravestones of Richards family members at the Burton cemetery. What has caught my attention was the name of William's son, Townsend Richards, born in Illinois about 1837. By coincidence, I have a ggg-grandfather named Townsend Richards, born in Virginia in 1798, who lived in Ohio prior to 1820, and migrated to Wayne County, Illinois in 1838. We have found little concerning my Townsend's background, so it is possible that he had brothers somewhere. The dates and place of birth of William and Josiah mentioned above would not conflict with my Townsend's birth, so there is a chance they might be related. If anyone might have any information on where these Richards originated in Virginia, or where they lived while in Ohio, I would appreciate it. I would like to see if they fit any of the clues we have so far for my ggg-grandfather Richards.
