    3. Thanks, Mindy, this makes sense as the river can freeze pretty solid even with the dams in place.... 3. My dad, who is 87 now, and I had a discussion about another river he used to walk across. Though not as big a the Mississippi. He said most rivers froze in Winter. There were NO power plants which generate heat into the river waters. He said, in fact, part of the reason power plants are on rivers is to use the water to cool equipment. So most rivers water temperatures are higher once the water is pumped back into the river at a warmer temp. Thus changing not only the temp, but environment for fish, plants, etc. Please visit the web site I created with my students http://www.geocities.com/midwestinstitute Also visit my Indiana Orff Schulwerk (music and movement education) web site. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/6131
