It may be that the van why you mention connects to my van why, and I will look into it. you may not hear from me about this for a while -- both my parents died in early January, and that and work have me swamped! I think there are Adam's in every generation which makes it confusing. My great grandmother was Emma Welfelt Burchett, her father was George Welfelt - son of Adam C. Welfelt (1829-1865) and Sophia Fish. Adam C. was the son of Adam Welfelt/Vallerchamp and Anna Van Why (or Way). That Adam was the son of Simeon Peter Vallerchamp born in France in 1751 and died in Huntingdon, PA in 1825 from the info I have. I have no info on Sophia Fish after 10 years at this. I was previously in touch with a woman who was a Vallerchamp so I believe not all of our ancestors changed their names to Welfelt. Also there is a book that contains family history and pictures. She emailed me the pics and a few pertinent pages Ege, Thompson P. Dodson genealogy, 1600-1907 Philadelphia, Pa.: Deemer & Jaisohn, 1908, 440 pgs. It contains some info on the Vallerchamp family and some geneology that is difficult for me to follow. It never mentions the name Welfelt - just the generations before the name change. I'm trying to attach the files, I hope this helps! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Maybe someone can figure this out! On 9 February 1920, Clarence Franklin "Frank" Moran, of Burlington, Iowa, was killed in a railroading accident. Listed as surviving him was his father, George Thomas Moran of Quincy, Illinois, and a sister, "Mrs. Ella Groeting" of Burlington, Iowa. I did not find either George or daughter Ella in the 1920 census, which had been taken a month earlier. Ella's sister (Grace) was listed by her husband's name (Mrs. Harry Rynott) in the obituary. The 1900 census of George's family showed his wife Louisa E. (Brown), and that they had 3 children living. At home was daughter Grace, and daughter "Nellie P.", born August "1885". The third living child was of course their son Clarence Frank Moran, already married. In the 1905 Iowa census, George is widowed and only daughter Nellie P. was living with him - no ages given in that record. In the 1910 census, George is living alone, and I have not found Nellie. George was said to have died in 1929, but was not listed in the Illinois Death Index - apparently he died elsewhere, probably back in Iowa. In the 1920 census, Ben Groeting is listed as divorced with his daughter Virginia, age 7, living with him in a boarding house in Quincy. In a previous message, Virginia's mother is given as Ernestine Hasse. So - is it possible that Ella, a.k.a. Nellie P., married Ben after the 1920 census was taken in January, but before the death of her brother in February? The Ella listed in the cemetery records (and Social Security death index) was listed as born in August 1892, not August 1885; yet another record conflict. If Ben and Ella married just after the 1920 census, that would explain the Infant "son" born 16 May 1921. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. At Find-A-Grave.com it is cited as South Prairie Cemetery in Adams County, Illinois. An accompanying picture of the entrance shows it as being a Lutheran Cemetery. There are only 26 citations there at this time but it does show a John Gerdes Buss and Weert Gerdes Buss being buried there. Also there is a map of sorts showing about were it is in relation to Golden. I check this website often. It now has over 40 million grave sites cited with more being added every minute. Enjoy and hope it helps a bit. Al Baumbach

Someone from Winipeg emailed me years ago about her great grandfather George Welfelt who said there was a story about a Joseph Welfelt from Freeport, IL who ran away with an Indian woman. She had the birthdate of my great grandfather, but my great grandfather was not the one who ran away with the Indian woman. The male names seem to be repeated each generation so it is confusing. Although your guy looks just like my great grandfather, they must not be brothers, perhaps cousins. I wish I had time to do more research. The free stuff from Ancestry makes it appear that my great grandfather or his father had an alternate last name...Vallerchamp. That seems interesting. Anyway, I don't have a chart or anything to figure out which of these men with the same names were in a particular generation. He is the son of Abraham Welfelt (born ~ 1836 by census report, and his wife Jan (maiden unknown), who is shown living with him and Charlotte and their children in Kansas in Cowley County Kansas in 1880 census. In 1860 Adam age 7 is with his paremnta Abraham and Jane, both 34, in the household of Abraham's parents Adam and Anna Welfelt (both 61) in Middle Smithfield, Monroe County. In 1850, before Adam was born, Abraham is in the Adam-Anna household, age 14, and there is a brother Joseph age 18, thus born ~1832. Is that the right Joseph for you (your Great great grandfather? Then my adam would be his nephew, not brother. By the way, the inference of my adam being native American is twofold, the folklore passed to my mother by her mother, the sister of Charlotte Hanna Welfelt, and by a newspaper clipping passed down to me from them. I will transcribe it soon and send it along. The gist is that his funeral was run by the "Improved Order of Red Men" which is a Native Americal society, flowers were provided by the Degree of Pocohontas (their Women's Auxiliary), and music by the Tohee Tribe. I believe that he was a Lenape Indian, a branch of the Deleware Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
