oh my dear I am not making fun of bigneck. I have family and friends live there in the area. that was an old saying for years about small towns. matter of fact the best tv repair man lived there for many years I'm sure he most likely is gone now. I love my home town area. that is the most preaty area up and around quincy and the hole state of Ill. it has the view of family loving and carring people. it was something that mindy had said. I just added that saying. I love my adams county. Linda Cricket Hackmann wrote: Linda Summers wrote: <peak around the corner and plum out of town. lol >> Now don't make fun of Bigneck!! That's where my dad was raised....and we still have family that live there....on the same farm that our Irish ancestors imigrated to in the late 1860s. :-) But you're right....it is a tiny little place....but judging from the old newspaper clippings that I've read, and the number of men who were from Bigneck on an Adams County military roster that I saw one time, it must have been quite a bit bigger at one time! Oh I agree regarding the obits on the Herald Whig. Funny how the Hannibal paper does publish the obit. You just click on the name that is listed in the death listing and there is the obit behind it. Herald Whig hasn't moved that far up in the world I guess. Washington Square is still there but boy has it changed in the past few years. Many new things and the jazz festivals are there alot on the weekends. The library and I are good buddies. Shawnnee, I still live in Quincy. Returned "HOME" about 5 years ago after spending 20 years on the road with a military husband. Fowler I would have to say is slightly northeast of Quincy. Linda? Am I about right? I know you go north on 336 and then you go east on 24. Would you guys like to have a map of the Quincy area :-)) Mindy wrote:actually your right Linda.......its I72 North to the exit for Lorraine which is actually Hwy 24. I72 ends about the fairgrounds and 336 continues. They just started taking that hwy farther north Mindy Adams & Pike Co., IL Genealogy Host http://www.iltrails.org/adams/index.html http://www.iltrails.org/pike/index.html "Never argue with idiots. I72 use to be called another name but I do not remember it and before fowler there is road that takes you north up past the fair grounds that was called Adams county fair grounds. spent many fair days there showing my 4/H items off . That is some of the things I remember. Linda Mindy wrote:Shawnnee, > I still live in Quincy. Returned "HOME" about 5 years ago after > spending 20 years on the road with a military husband. ok one more thing for the evening and out of here to bed. fowler, poloma, coatsburg, camp point, clayton, timewell, and then mt sterling which is in brown county. two miles after camp point you turn north and go to golden. at coatsburg go north and go to bigneck. now that is a peak and plum town peak around the corner and plum out of town. lol that is hwy 61 which you turn back left or west and then you come to lorraine after you turn north about a mile off the hwy. which is 5 miles from bigneck. as long as you stay on 61 you will come into mendon. and at mendon stay on 61 the old road it looks like you will go to ursa and then at ursa you go south on hwy 96 back to quincy. so there is a bit of history about the roads in adams county. which are still there just a few added roads for progress. so happy hunting catch you all tomorrow. nite now Linda oh by the way I now live In Little Rock Ar. Mindy wrote:I know what you mean. This hockey of adding new roads, getting rid of others and changing the directions is for the darn birds. I went this way to a friends house frequently within the past 2 months. This is how I know to get there and yes, you pass the fairgrounds now. Hwy 336 is the new addition. Guess its the price of progress huh? LOL Mindy Adams & Pike Co., IL Genealogy Host http://www.iltrails.org/adams/index.html http://www.iltrails.org/pike/index.html "Never argue with idiots. yes shawnnee i went to golden to school and then to camp point high the home of the panters. that was back in 1965 when I got married. and fowler is north of quincy then east on hwy 24 a total of about 20 miles give or take a mile or to if you get a atlas you can find it. there is new hwy that has changed some of that area but fowler is still there and there is a cemetary there not sure of the name. now loraine is well noth of that up above hwy 61 north of mendon ill. my mothers sister used to live there before her husband past away in 1999. so I do know the area well. I hope you get back to quincy some day you will be happy when you do. good luck Linda Shawnnee Ramey wrote:Ok now that I am totally lost, LOL is Fowler South of Quincy or North or East? I don't know what it is but I creid all the way to Utah when I left Quincy and swore I would hate Utah and I did. I have missed it back home ever since. I know it would not be the same if I went back to live though. Almost all my fmaily (both sides) were from either Hancock Co, or Adams County or over in Canton Missouri from the time the counties started and some are still there. I think maybe that is why I still miss it. Did you guys go to school there? Mindy, I lived in Hamilton most of my life. Moved to Quincy when I was 12 and went to 6th grade at Irving, and Webster, then to Quincy Junior High then just as I was going to go to Quincy Sr. High we moved to Utah. I have lots of family and friends all over back there. Most of my family on my fathers side were from Lima and Quincy and Mendon. On my moms side they were in Carthage, Hamilton, Warsaw and Nauvoo. First settlers in both counties. It is funny but I really miss Washington Square and the library. I left in 1964. I guess I was almost 15. One of my girlfriends from Quincy came out to California to see me last summer and she went around town and video taped the area back there. It sure has grown. My cousin, Joe Conover, was the editor of the Quincy Harold Whig for years. He just retired I believe last year or the year before. I sure wish we could get them to publish the Obituaries in that paper on the internet. It would be nice for old folks like me. nope, but its the type that if you "bat" your eyes hard, you miss it all! I know that when you turn off on 24 from 336, you will come to Fowler first, then Paloma then Clayton. (I know Paloma is down the same road as Fowler and not much farther down. My friend that lives in Fowler has a gravel road by his house that if you follow it, in just a short time you are in Lorraine. I don't usually go out that way unless I go to their houses or I am attempting to raid Brown County's records! according to the atlas 336 extends on after 336 at the north end of I72 and fowler is three miles to the east of that junction. and that was that way when I came home last year. I72 use to be called another name but I do not remember it and before fowler there is road that takes you north up past the fair grounds that was called Adams county fair grounds. spent many fair days there showing my 4/H items off . That is some of the things I remember. Linda Mindy wrote:Shawnnee, I still live in Quincy. Returned "HOME" about 5 years ago after spending 20 years on the road with a military husband. Fowler I would have to say is slightly northeast of Quincy. Linda? Am I about right? I know you go north on 336 and then you go east on 24. I know what you mean.
